New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

Even the great beige-ening looked better than this...
Remember when they showed off this?:

And this?:

I'm getting Watchdogs and Cyberpunk flashbacks...

Would the OP or any of the other contributors in the thread be kind enough to post a few more planets showing repeating patterns, please?
I'm busy playing in CZs ATM and need a few more completed to unlock an engineer, thanks a million!

If you are unable to find any others, don't worry, it isn't important.
How many bad planet pictures does it take to convince a white knight? Asking for a friend.

All the planets are now generated from a small set of prefab terrain patterns. That's what the new planetary tech is all about. They replaced the elaborate procedural noise system of Horizons with prefab stuff that looks good at first sight, but repeats over and over and over and over and over. Once you've seen it, you can't unsee it. The old system had the potential to produce truly unique, unexpected results. The new system never will.

If they really are using a limited set of tiles that are repeating everywhere then we should be able to find repeated patterns across different planets. Has there been any evidence of this so far?

Let's not pretend that the old system didn't sometimes spit out very obvious patterns on some planets.

All of them have the same large crater with splash(?) pattern.

he accidently shows the same patterns 4:31 then up close at 4:37. edit: 0:00 too.

What I'm about to show you will be the final straw in cementing the new planetary tech system into a failure.

I remember Dr Kay Ross stating on stream that their procedural heightmap system made use of handmade terrain that would then be randomized across. I was worried when I heard this.

Check this out - I'll let the images speak for itself:

Literally all terrain features both from high orbit to low orbit are repeating, hand crafted, and break every little bit hunger for exploration. There is absolutely no desire to go down and explore since all you're looking at is the "randomly" organized set of hand crafted height map bits the developers have made.

Horizons gives a REAL sense of wanting to go and explore. Find planets with unique features.

Planets in Odyssey are no longer unique. They are just reorganised sets of the same features.

These planets were designed with one goal: look acceptable from an on-foot perspective or when looking from a twilight perspective with a setting sun for the atmo effect.
3 years for this?

They refused to look inside Galileo's telescope as it was standing there in front of them, ready for them to see the truth. Quite literally, Galileo had set it beforehand.
This is the same kind of mentality. They are not looking for the truth, they seek confirmation of their own version of reality. No amount of facts can change someone who's mind is set like that.

Ok here's one after about 5 minutes of searching:

2nd planet I think in Wyrd. Is it just the system map? I hope so. I don't have time to go there right now.

It's the smaller dark squiggly pattern around the middle, if you look you can see it repeated THREE times, and I noticed a fourth on the other side of the planet (probably more times but I felt I found my answer).

Please tell me it isn't like that when you fly up to it.

Yes, it's bad, now I would like some statistics:
what is percentage of planets that use the same ground pattern multiple times in a way that make them look THAT bad and artificial?
Its just a textures for far cheap lod of planets that dont represent real ground generated mesh. Now show me here any repeatable patterns, huh

Tbh, at this point after about x5 very long forum threads explaining this issue - the only response we got is on a thread praising the new tech and saying "Glad you like it!"

It's pretty obvious at this point that what we see is working as intended.

I'm not saying it won't be improved.
What I am saying is that this is not a bug. It's also maybe not a feature...just poorly implemented new tech that possibly will improve in the years to come.

What I do know is that if this is how they will release it to console and do away with Horizons - you will have -"Elite Dangerous : Exodus" instead of Odessy.

Do you understand that this is not real planet surface, its just fast approximation with preset textures? Switch to Ultraforcapture and see for youself how different it will be.
