New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

But it's crazy they use entire regions that must be many square miles in size. One would've thought 'handcrafted' would mean small tilesets randomly put into a pattern. Small to me would be a few tens of feet accross not hundreds of miles. Say you get ten types of a mountain base, ten middle bits, and ten peaks that all look right in any order.
They now have multiple layers of repeating tiles down to foot level is all.
It's probably why it all looks so bad, as they just stretch em over whatever the heightmap is. I suspect it's this that's giving the weird stretchy-texture look now on cliffs etc, and explains why the elevation ranges are now lessened.

To go slightly off topic...

Boo!!!!
Maybe how about a secondary light source for more powerful PCs? and what art reason explains only one sun light source where one side of the ship that was in sunlight turns black because the other sun is now shining on you?
This, dangerous black holes and comets was what I really wanted for my flying a spaceship in space game update...

Back on topic...
Yaa boo to repeating textures...
Oh you also wanted better black holes? Here's graphically downgraded neutron stars!!!

Would the OP or any of the other contributors in the thread be kind enough to post a few more planets showing repeating patterns, please?
I'm busy playing in CZs ATM and need a few more completed to unlock an engineer, thanks a million!

If you are unable to find any others, don't worry, it isn't important.

Personally I couldn't find any repeating patterns.

Irrespective of the perceived (and I personally agree) downgrade, I'm mostly sad about the idea that everything has changed. Engineer sites notwithstanding as these are manually injected with their landscape, all the little landmarks, stations and locations on the ground that one found and occasionally returned to are gone. It's a bit as if all the systems in the bubble had been randomly shuffled around. And with this precedent set, I guess we can expect planets to suddenly change at some other point in the future, say when new tiles get added to the pool...

I know there are billions of planets, but ultimately, that's why it kind of mattered to me that 2 or 3 of them felt familiar. Anyhow, I'll get over it.
You wish. The new planetary tech doesn't even get Engineer sites right. Go check Farseer Inc. Drive out the door, run into a malformed mountain that was made for Horizons. The SRV hangar being at a 45° angle, because it was made for Horizons. And the whole planet looking different.

What I'm about to show you will be the final straw in cementing the new planetary tech system into a failure.

I remember Dr Kay Ross stating on stream that their procedural heightmap system made use of handmade terrain that would then be randomized across. I was worried when I heard this.

Check this out - I'll let the images speak for itself:

Literally all terrain features both from high orbit to low orbit are repeating, hand crafted, and break every little bit hunger for exploration. There is absolutely no desire to go down and explore since all you're looking at is the "randomly" organized set of hand crafted height map bits the developers have made.

Horizons gives a REAL sense of wanting to go and explore. Find planets with unique features.

Planets in Odyssey are no longer unique. They are just reorganised sets of the same features.

These planets were designed with one goal: look acceptable from an on-foot perspective or when looking from a twilight perspective with a setting sun for the atmo effect.
Same as in Horizons? Lol. Ofc textures in Elite arent randomly generated. Heightmap is not a textures.

I've posted this before so forgive me but since it is relevant to the post :)

The obvious fix is to create a LOT more "hand-crafted" areas to throw into the randomiser.

Or maybe, use procedural generation to created the areas. Now, there's an idea!
Or at the least, make sure in code that a single planet isn’t allowed to use the same one over and over. Maybe they could do that at the same time they patch out having crash sites peppered on landable worlds 20,000 light years from nowhere.

really? beacuse the old grid pattern of craters which could be found very very often, on some planet more obvious than on others.... it was extremly visible, way more visible, way more obvious than anything presented so far in this thread... atleast that horrid pattern seem to be gone now?

and funny thing is, not many ever complained about it in the past, probably bec it had always been there... check my 2 other post a couple of pages back for prime examples
It's rather worse having entire landscape regions copied and pasted. It's also the case this is supposed to be a new planetary tech that hugely upgraded things.

So you don't expect people to complain going from repeating craters to repeating hundred-mile-square regions? That hurts exploration a whole lot more-- it makes planet MORE samey, and both of these under what supposed to be fancy new upgraded tech.
