What are they??
Please enlighten us FDev.

In exploration I have 27.5 billion cr profits, 10,000 first system discoveries and 1,000,000 Lys under the belt, yet this is not enough for an elite 1 rank?

I've been wondering the same thing. I have 5 billion in exploration credits (Elite is reached at 300 million) and 22 billion in trade credits (Elite is reached at 1 billion) and yet these aren't enough for Elite I-V???
I'm also seeing a number of people on inara with those ranks but it seems strange they always only have it in one rating, combat, trade or exploration, but only one.

They aren't retroactive - I made an issue for it since I think, when possible (trade and exploration at least), they should be:

Please make Elite Stars (prestige) ranks retroactive.

With Odyssey we got 5 more "Elite Stars" ranks in each category, to allow is to progress beyond Elite. Hate it or love it, I think that as it stands now, it's a broken system - it doesn't take retroactive progress into account. This means that when you see someone with Elite 3 or even Elite 5...

I just force imported my Frontier Data into Inara, and my Explorer rank still just shows as plain old Elite., unless I am looking in the wrong place on Inara.

Just to shed some light on it:
  • Inara is not assuming anything, it takes ranks exactly as reported by journals and there are certainly people that are having the above-Elite ranks already.
  • As far as I know, the above-Elite ranks are not retroactive, so you need to work on them since the Odyssey launch and everybody has an equal start.
  • It seems that the in-game progress display is bugged (or at least was, not sure if today's patch changed something) for the Elite and above ranks (so there is no progress displayed until you actually reach the new rank). Same applies for the progress reported in the journals (and thus why is no rank progress seen also on Inara).

1. If you are already Elite rank before Odyssey, you are already Elite I
2. It's not backdated. If you already had 2 billion in trade before Odyssey, and were Elite in trade, you don't jump straight to Elite II, you stay at Elite I. Every Elite rank after Elite I you earn, as of Odyssey is a prestige rank, ie another billion credits in trade then makes you Elite II, another billion credits would make you Elite III and so on.
3. After Elite I the only rank you see next is Elite II. The same for the remaining Elite ranks. There is no in-between ranks after Elite I

Everything I just said, is subject to corrections ... I might be wrong, and if I am wrong, then I'm wrong, I am not perfect.

So those that are elite 1 to 5 sold a bucket load of data in the last couple of days. Fair enough.

Better get back out there them and start scanning.
