New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

personally i am searching for real mountains for days now
all i found was either smoth surfaces with fake-shadows to imitate depth or those small wavy hills, that are everwhere now
really sad to see what that new planet-tech really is.. a fasade thats repeptitive and gives no posibility of variations other than color.
Real enough?

Maybe those worried about the new planet tech should have a look at the Odyssey Screenshots thread - there are some gorgeous planets out there, hills, mountains, terrain that varies across a single planet way more than I think it did in Horizons. I hope there are still spectacular canyons and craggy mountains, I understand that’s important for some people here in terms of how they like to play. But checking through the screenshots might reassure folks that the planets are varied and interesting to visit.

If you followed the thread, it is not about features on the surface, that's only a sidetrack. This here is mainly about the repetitious tiling of planetary scale :)

I have never requested a Steam refund until five minutes ago.

I was willing to suffer through the tech and rendering issues, figuring they'd be smoothed over eventually. But as mainly an explorer, I find this game-breaking and unfixable. This tiling is clearly fundamental to Odyssey and is not something that can be patched over. Words cannot convey my disappointment.

500+ hours played on Horizons.
You're correct. It can't be patched because it's not a bug. It's by design. This is what they wanted to do. I will NOT spend another nickel with frontier and I'm borderline on whether to delete the whole game.

Maybe the woman does not feel she can best represent her company if being repeatedly questioned by randoms on her personal account in her own time. Maybe she just does not wish to do intensive company PR work for free. There's nothing wrong with either, in fact I wish more people had such good sense.
True. Or maybe she knows she tipped the donkey cart over and doesn't want to be reminded of it.

So how generated offline means handcrafted?

I didn't say it did. I suggested you replace that layman's term (which other people are using for simplicity) with "terrain shapes generated offline", ie. Dr. Ross's words.

It just means that this procgen is too complex for real time calculations, so they calculated it offline on powerful network of pcs. Its like pre rendering (blender, maya, 3ds max, etc) vs realtime rendering (games).

So you know what FDev are doing? Do you work there?
When Dr. Ross said that terrain in Odyssey is, "now generated offline into terrain shapes that we know are formed," it could mean a lot of things. Eg.

1. Using empirical data of actual planetary geology with post processing for variety.
2. Simulation of geological processes over appropriate epochs (eg. rivers and canyon formation).
3. Procgen using algorithms approximating known planetary geology.
4. Hand crafting.
5. <add an unknown number of other possibilities>
6. Any combination of the above.

Was the planet tech patched already? Yesterday I was mountaineering and it was specacular. The textures were great and the mountains looked natural. Totally amazing.

FWIW other than the weird bacteria multiplying in petri dish effects at a certain altitude, I'm not seeing this repeated texture/shape effect at all, and I've been looking for it. I'm playing on ultra, maybe that matters? I think that while OP has clearly found something odd, it appears to be fairly rare that the effect is anywhere near that extreme.

I wish, tbh all I see is repeated patterns now when coming into planets.

Once on the ground etc the planets feel and look great but the render engine and LOD is seriously messed up when flying....

According to the OP you are a liar and used Photoshop to create the screenshot. :ROFLMAO:

Please don't speak for anyone else other than yourself, especially when it's clear they are completely different screenshots they are talking about!
