New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

those people have 8-12 GB VRAM... thats the secret for the ultra textures. People with 4-6 GB VRAM have low texture problems. We need to feed it more VRAM and it will be cinematic again!
Low texture problem kicks in randomly even on my 8 GB VRAM system, even when my VRAM memory is only half full.
EDO generally acts... strange when it comes to VRAM usage.
When I resume game on planets surface, it does NOT fill more then 4-4.5gb VRAM, even on ultraforcapture, but it does not seem to break the visuals - I noticed no correlation between % of used VRAM and appearing of this bug.

I visited Eranin last night - one of the systems I remember from the original Beta way back in the Kickstarter days. These original systems have a kind of nostalgia to them, for me. I visited the 2nd (maybe 3rd?) planet - and.... it's a copy-pasta world now! A regular pattern is visible repeating several times on the surface.

What a travesty. This planet literally looked better 8 fracking years ago!

I was playing ED on an integrated graphics card. I knew the limitations - I knew it would not be the best experience. When Horizons arrived I was gutted that I would not be able to play anymore. It took me months to pay for and build my own PC with a GTX 1060 that had the capability to show me gorgeous (for the time) planet-side experiences.

Now that machine was creaking under the video editing that I needed to do during the pandemic, so I upped my game to a PC with 32GB memory and an RTX 3060 Ti which has 4,800+ cores to handle video editing at 60FPS 1080p.

The point being - I did not call out Horizons as being carp because I didn't have the build to run it. I upped my own game, and lived with watching other peoples' beautiful screenshots and rejoicing with the community... not trying to browbeat them into seeing my perspective and calling anyone who contradicted me liars.

I don't mind the copy-pasta worlds as long as I don't notice it :)) If you are going to use the same pattern... try to rotate/scale the textures and have a limit on a planet/system how much times you going to use a shape... some planets are just shameless... like the same small pattern right next to each other. People here claim that this is not true... that we are unlucky... there are amazing planets out there. I am sure there are but cmon!!! I know what I see... I've been over 100 systems since release and I seen that damn huge crater on almost every single planet with that leopard type shapes. Idk... probably Horizons was the same but we didn't noticed it this much. Just make it less obvious. I think the Detailed Surface Scanner gave it away... in Horizons everything was blue when you scanned a surface without any shapes showing but in Odyssey with the new material system we can visually see now the terrain ground patterns/shapes.

'some people are posting pictures like this [shows good looking terrain in Odyssey] and I want you to realise that these people are lying to you. This picture received a bunch of post-processing work to make it look much better than what you'd find in game. Gamma, contrast, shadows where reduced and highlights were increased. This is not what you get in game.'

You got us there.
All commanders publishing all those good looking screenshots are working for FD PR department.
Some of them were acting as a "normal" players for years, taking part in forum activities, making friends, playing ED together with other forum members, but in reality it was all just preparation for this PR campaign.

Reshade. Which a lot of commanders use. It is exactly what the video describes, in a non hyperbolic manner. It is post processing, to make the game look better then it does. Does everyone in the screenshot thread use them? No, but you can see ReShade on some of them. Like when you spot the Depth of Field effect that does not exist in that shape or form in EDO.

Of course they are "bad apples", but how honest is author of this video when it comes to all great looking NON reshaded landscapes screenshots?

Yep.
Denialism on both sides is... impressive to say it in a non-pejorative way,
Meanwhile here I am sitting wondering about the ugly textures when encountered, and start feeling like it is a problem with "legacy" Horizon planets for the most part. Because most epic planets have atmos, and most fugly ones are old airless rocks.
And ofc the other engine bugs are not helping, like when all textures disappear from under you magically for a bit :D "I'm walking on sunshine", indeed.

Where in the history of mankind have you ever seen one person arguing both sides of a discussion? ;)
I used to do it all the time.
Seriously, I liked to enter a discussion on some political or social subject,
find logical flaws / assumptions in reasoning on both sides,
get labelled as an enemy and attacked from left and right for that,
have a laugh after confirming again,
that following ANY ideology ends with shutting half of your brain off :)

Totally with you on that point: if you can describe your position as an ideology, then you fell of the table on the wrong end :)

I though we are here to determine and discuss state and future of ED,
I never noticed that bit...
My error :ROFLMAO:

I've not bothered to join the great debate much, have a few livestreams on youtube that are much more truthful than the arguments on both sides, they are just play, warts & all.

I didn't call out Odyssey's performance as being crap because I didn't have the build to run it. I called it out as crap because it's curious mix of improvements and regressions to visual fidelity did not come anywhere near close to justifying the significant and often inexplicable reduction in frame rate at similar settings.

Frame rates that have, by all accounts, shot up at the first update yesterday, by any chance?

I mean, we all know the future of ED is DOOOOOOOoooM, but that's nothing new. We're just gonna go on like always. But to paraphrase Blade as we have a profanity filter "Some people always try to ice skate uphill"

Sadly not, still runs like trash on my Ryzen 7 2700X and my RTX 2060 in 1080p.

If anything, some things got worse. Remember how it says they lowered gamma on planets? Well yes, they are lowered. Instead I saw a glow-in-the-dark xmas tree in the agro station, the lighting was completely borked on the hydroponics.
