Why do on foot weapons damage ships so much?

Even in an eagle, you shouldn't be able to make a dent in the shields or hull with most handheld weapons, considering it can survive at least 1 ship grade missile to the hull. Currently the handhelds do too much damage. You can drop an Eagle's shields with about 4 plasma shotgun blasts. The scaling does not add up when personal weapons do that much so I hope it's another bug. I know this isn't a hardcore sim, but I just want there to be some consistency.

Right now, ED is essentially a Battlefield game where you can damage a tank with a handgun.
 
Someone saw the stats for a g5 plasma rifle.. it has the same DPS as a size 1 railgun…I am now looking for toe straps so I can mount me crew on the hull so I can use them as turrets..
at least people can’t now punch an anaconda to death

Yeah, that just seems like too much. I can see the rocket launcher maybe tickling ships, but this just breaks any immersion the game has in this area which is very important for this game specifically

The sniper rifle or the plasma assault rifle?

For plasma weapons given the bullet velocity defenitly no. For all other weapons given the resistances also Def no.
What they could do is a a modifier that reduced ground to space damage
 
True, the power of those handheld rifles are scarily significant. Paranoia led me to putting together a ship with reinforced prismatics complete with heavy duty shield boosters and heavy duty military grade hull to do Odyssey missions.

I would be fine with this if when the cockpit gets broken, I can take out my handgun and pew pew the other ship for massive damage, or do sharpshooter legs shots on the other pilot. Or maybe even have a specific anti-ship gun which locks on to the other cockpit and then breaks it open and tethers me into it and now we fisticuffs!
 
What is completely stupid is that the same weapon needs multiple shots to down a personal shield / person. And, of course, there is this discrepancy that you cannot kill everybody in a base with a ship blast. Or target an NPC/CMDR on foot... Or target a skimmer/goliath. Or when you have your Cutter's shield handed to you after crashing into a goliath (Horizons style). Just more and more concessions made in the name of "gameplay".

Just to correct a fellow cmdr above: no, you cannot destroy a tank in Battlefield (no matter the version) with a handgun. You need several RPG, mines or C4 packages.
 
If you can wipe whole settlement in 1 air strike be ready to be killed back. That's ok.
And don't use paper ships if you gona do some illegal. I use space combat shields on my krait which hold space CZ for long.
 
If only they took a page out of every RPG ever and made personal weapons an order of magnitude less powerful than vehicle based weapons.

Alas, that was discussed 'till the horse was dead in Alpha already.
Yeah, back in alpha I posted the damage scale from the D6 west end SW RPG as an example 🤷‍♂️
 
...guys, it's plasma ball. Size does not matter until u have good enough power source. And it is good enough, 15Mj there.
 
Can we shoot out the cockpit glass from the inside and fire out, fugitive style?

Or just open the side window and take them down Interstate '76 style, baby!
