Looks like I'm buying Odyssey....

My sincere hope is that it won't be crap forever.

One thing that has been bothering me is that as I look at DLC for other games, it seems that Frontier has their pricing model flipped upside-down. Most games I play charge the higher price for the core game and a very modest price for the DLC, unlike Frontier which is charging more for Odyssey than Horizons. Even if Odyssey ends up being fixed 100%, I'm not sure there's $40 worth of new content there. Sure, there may be $40 of effort put into the game by developers (a LOT of work went into modeling interiors), but from a player's (or at least this player's) perspective, it feels like maybe $20 of gameplay at most. 🤷‍♂️
Exactly, about "My sincere hope is that it won't be crap forever." it depends on how "forever" means in term of timespan since PC people shelled out full price for a :poop:bag and ajoke of an Alpha...in advance. I understand that because of that so many say "well it's playable at least.." you know it's hard for some to admit their own mistakes, but this one was very predictable.

It's the quiet voices I've been listening to, the ones that are normally very positive about ED but are not so positive about Odyssey. I ignore the naysayers and white knights, literally! But to your point, there have been voices who are positive about Odyssey, and they aren't the typical cheerleaders, so maybe they are right. Since performance is a huge factor regarding satisfaction, and performance seems to be RNG, maybe I'll get lucky and my rig will run Odyssey just fine.
Performance definitely seems to be a bit of a coin flip at the moment, I struggle to push 20fps on the ground but a friend with almost identical specs never drops below 60-70

The concept was not hard to understand, NMS players on PC are the lesser part so it's obvious you'll see small numbers, do you get it?
Don’t behave like a little 🤡 MKAY, keep the tone or this discussion is over. ED and counter strike is basically on the same level regarding players right now, the point is people are playing the game in significant numbers.

Duck, Can I suggest you wait till Friday and see what the roadmap says? If you like what's on the roadmap, buy the game then as an endorsement of the new message, if you don't like the roadmap, maintain your vigelence.
That's a very good suggestion. I can easily wait a few days. I believe those who gifted me the funds for Odyssey won't mind. Thank you for your insight!

Once you get out of arguments are you trying to transform this discussion into something different? My Tones? Have a look at yours instead or just stay away from the web if you get offended out of nothing ;) bye

CS has been dead a long time. People have switched to CS: Global Offensive which has 750k concurrent right now, or 75x more than Elite.

Really, stop clinging to the false hope that this expansion sold well to bring in new blood. It didn't. Server numbers are basically back to pre-launch levels. Which again is a good thing for people who want to try it now since it seems to have stopped all the constant network issues.

Bye 👋 no arguments and all insults.

1.6 still has a fairly active (for a 20 year old game) playerbase atm, I still jump into it on occasion and never struggle to find a scrim/pug :p

Source on the other hand....

Oh I’m not saying it sold well, where did I indicate that? I just stated the fact that 9K people are playing on steam right now on a Monday afternoon.

If this number is good or bad I don’t know, however ED was never played by 30K players like you see the big AAA games, so at best it’s just an observation, you can see the glass half empty or half full it’s up to you.

So please don’t put words or intentions into what I post.

Yeah, but point is the 9,000 or so playing 1.6 are the holdouts. The real number of people playing CS atm is 750k and they're in Global Operations. Elite is only in the same league as the holdouts.

I'll probably play with the new shaders (Odyssey Immersion Mod) as much as I play the game itself.
I think you might get "a lot of fun" with the new shaders.
My theory at the moment is, we got half a finished work.

The old lightning model was not fit for detailed interiors, planets etc at this level of fidelity, they aimed for. So they switched to a new lightning system.
This works well was we can see indoors or in settlements, on planets with lots of shadows.
But this also needed an update of the shaders for the old content in space etc, as these were still optimized for the old lightning system, which they did not finish yet.

Hence the mixup in lightning atm IMHO.

Funny enough, the only thing affected by the gamma setting i have found so far is the legs HUD and the main menu.

TLDR: They didn't finish on time for release

You probably have me on ignore as well but I'll respond to this as I thought about this last night when playing the game, and touching upon it with @Rubbernuke.

There is a LOT of copy/paste in EDO, even more so than the base game. You have 1 layout each for Starport, Outpost and Planetary Port; you see the same pieces of garbage at exactly the same places (I believe this is state/security dependent?). A tube there, a pizza box there. Copy/paste. The mission NPCs (who stand in exactly the same spots, everywhere) give me the same handful of lines each time I pass them - top 1% anyone?

The shops are the exact same layout and look, the bar looks the same. The only difference is some slight colour variation, maybe a different banner (PP related usually). Weapon choice, while broad enough, isn't as varied as in other games.

The settlements show a certain level of variation but I still think they're all the same layouts i.e. 27 of them (?) in total - but they use the same building blocks so visually they're extremely similar in their appearance. The visual fidelity is alright - not fantastic, or even great. Just alright for a game in 2021. It's good enough from an immersion viewpoint for me, but there's a lot of repetition.

What I'm trying to (long-windedly) say is, I'm not sure how much work it really was to come up with all that - if I compare this with Night City (CP2077) or any Bethesda or Rockstar map (interior and exterior environments), it's rather on the light side of things in terms of variation and detail.

EDIT: one more example I forgot, you know there's the status panel in the hangar, next to the lift that gives you the (UTC) time and days until shift change - that's 26. Everywhere. Every day. How hard could it have been to track that variable at each location? It's a very small thing but when I played the Alpha I thought 'wow, neat little detail'. Nope, hard coded it seems. Copy/paste.
