Wow, my ships headlamps really help to light up a dark base

Some bases are powered down and on the darkside of the planet its nearly pitch black, often a pain to navigate on foot

My ship was somewhat close and pointing toward it and i thought what the neck lets see.

WOW, a whole new experience. give it a try, and it also adds another level of moodiness

It might be a bit of a hot take, but I like how dark Elite gets now. So many games have nights that are about as dark as a heavily overcast day. I'd like to see more dynamic lighting, though, like if there's a moon or planet in the sky at night that should brighten the ground quite a bit. Overall, though, I enjoy having to break out my flashlight.

Oh i agree, i like the mood that the flashlight brings as well. but give the ship light a try as well. its pretty amazing looking in its own right on a powered down base on the darkside

I would need to test it but cannot atm due to performance.
Though I wonder does the AI also find it difficult to see and also not see at all when its dark ?
Can the AI only see objects in the cone of light from its torch ?
Those things do matter imo.
But yes for ambience etc the darkness is great.
Though some bigger and stronger floodlights might be needed for some of the outposts. I sometime find I have to turn on Night Vision to be able to take of and move around without hitting the station/outpost/settlement.

As far as I have seen the AI doesn't use their flashlights at all, so I presume they're unaffected by the dark.

I too have been using the ship's lights to scout out or just illuminate ground targets whenever possible, works a treat. Also, is it just me or do the lights shine about twice as far as in Horizons? ~1.5km rather than ~700m

It's a shame the ship now forgets the lights were on 🤔

Always fun even on foot when you wander around, turn on the lights and find you're up against the side of a building you couldn't see :)

forget? I am not sure what you mean. I scampered all over this base on foot and the whole time the ship lights Illuminated the base from one side and casting moody shadows on the other.

Yes, they do.

What I have noticed is them turning them off, and I think that is very deliberate. The AI seems rather logical.

They tend to turn them off when I give them some missile bombardment. Then they hide and only after a while come back crawling out with their lights on, hoping the rain had stopped.

It does. Them going out is also a good indicator for when your ship gets destroyed by stubborn NPC's.
2 nights back I didn't even get a warning...

Lights used to keep their on/off state through a game restart IIRC, now they always start off, and I forget :)
That was before launch if they did, I always fly lights on unless I have reason to turn them off.

I like that they still remain on after the ship departs & returns from orbit when I'm on a planet, although I've noticed pips have reverted to 222 again (but settings persist if you just leave the ship on the ground).

Lots of nice qol touches that were added over the years have been broken or lost in Odyssey, but I'm glad the headlights behaviour has been retained.
