Hayo Zookeepers,
We can't believe May is almost over! Wasn't it the end of April just the other day? We hope everyone's been keeping well this past month, no matter where in the world you are. We're back with another Monthly Catch Up, providing you with the highlights of the latest comings and goings on from Planet Zoo.
Here's what you may have missed in May!
News:
We kicked off May with by rolling out Update 1.5.3 (and then 1.5.4) for Planet Zoo! These two updates addressed several community reported issues that remained after the release of the Southeast Asia Pack. A big thank you to everyone for sharing and reporting bugs and issues to our Issue Tracker. Please keep those reports coming in!
We also revealed the winners of our Picturesque Postcard Competition. After receiving your incredibly creative entries we had a hard time choosing, but we finally landed on two winners who will receive Planet Zoo plushies of their choice. The two winners are pictured below, and you can find all the runners up in the thread linked above.
The first winner was this amazing Linen Zoo postcard from Nathanek:
The second winner was Chris, with a postcard from Zoopark im Rheintal:
Finally, some sad news: our awesome co-worker Jay left Frontier at the beginning of May to start a new chapter. We wish him all the best and are very excited for his next adventure. We'll miss you Jay, and we'll see you around the Internet.
Community Creations:
Some amazing community creations came our way in May and here are our favourites:
Ever wanted to visit a recreation of London Zoo in 1985? Then ZSH1985's London Zoo is the place to go! This zoo features every habitat in London Zoo (that are available in Planet Zoo), and all the correct animals for the time. Check out their YouTube channel for more!
Troopermatthew's Guardian's Rest is a fantastic 30x30 habitat featuring a small fishing town, a lovely river for a boat tour guide, and a massive stone guardian keeping watch over it all. We were blown away by the level of detail of this habitat and we hope you find a use for it in your zoos!
Need a home for your Proboscis Monkeys but don't know how to make one? We can heartily recommend PaulsLey's Proboscis Primate Paradise for just such a purpose. This beautiful build is filled to the brim with features, including a beautiful Zen garden, all guest facilities, and a staff hub!
Your desert themed zoos will look their best with Kingdom's Post Apocalyptic Terrarium, which houses two exhibits inside what was once an air raid shelter. This unique build is ready to go and we hope to see it in your zoo!
Your guests won't go hungry with this Classic Food Court from FrisBeat. It's the perfect place for famished visitors to sit down and relax with a burger or a nice pizza before journeying on to see more animals in your zoo.
Creator Spotlight:
This month, Rudi Rennkamel published a lovely cinematic short film about his Yosemite Valley Zoo project on his channel and the results are fantastic. This is definitely worth the watch:
Finally, it's time to round off May with all the Zoopedia facts we've shared this past month:

Finally, it's time to round off May with all the Zoopedia facts we've shared this past month:
- Dholes have different dentition to all other dog species; it is thought this may help them eat faster to prevent their kills being stolen by competitors.
- While molting, the giant Malaysian leaf insect is very vulnerable and can easily die if the temperate or humidity of the environment are not ideal, or if they are touched while their bodies are still soft. This can make raising them in captivity difficult.
- Infant tapirs have dark fur with a pattern of white spots and stripes that camouflages them in the undergrowth and dappled light of the rainforest.
- Babirusas are excellent swimmer; it is thought that they are found across various Indonesian islands because they swam to them.
