Another tip-'o-the-day; contrary to doctrine, do spend time learning how to sneak without using rooftops... Reason why? Find yourself a planet at 1G - Grey in the Orrere system's a good one - and try to jump there... G3 Mav (resistance but no jump mod) manages very short hops, and had to jump up two crates just to get onto a relatvely low roof... Either that, or don't do stealth type jobs on high G planets ;)

<Edit> Of course, by "high G" I mean anything around 0.7 upwards. But look at it like this; at 1G a Mav has issues jumping... imagine what it'd be like for a Dom... just manages to clear a small pebble Seriously though, that's one thing Elite: D.O does rather well; simulating combat on worlds with varying gravities. Just my opinion of course ;) </Edit>

Good advice. Rooftops can also cause mistakes if you're not careful when coming back off one. They're not a magic shield either, you can get spotted on one easily if you get too close.
 
This is mistaken. Clean civilians will allow you to scan them, and say something like "You've got the wrong man" during and "Happy now?" when finished, while wanted NPCs will attack you for revealing them. I'm not entirely sure about guards; they may order you to stow your tool.
Confirmed. They only get aggressive if they have a bounty. Even guards. I think this was different in alpha but I think it's good how it is now.

I'd still not recommend going about scanning openly because there's no benefit and it can put your mission at risk. But thanks for pointing it out - I've added a correction to the video's description!

I finally got my first "Live Odyssey" video guide completed and it's now available to view on Youtube, complete with a brand new intro/outro and improved audio recording. Most of the transcript is available in the description of the video but I'll add the key points here. I'll be adding to this series with a definitive infiltration guide to follow shortly and then deeper-dive guides into various settlement types and missions and even stealth-based combat and additional advance combat guides at a later date. One of the key skills in Odyssey, and one aspect I absolutely love about the expansion, is its stealth mechanics. This guide explains it all!

This is what you’ll learn:
  1. You’ll learn why stealth is important in Odyssey and why you need to use it (this is in the video only)
  2. You’ll get an understanding of the concepts and rules around how stealth and detection works
  3. You’ll also learn what you can do to avoid detection by NPCs.

The stealth mechanic follows this basic process:
  1. Detection (and how you should avoid it)
  2. Reaction (what happens when you're detected)
  3. Escalation or Resolution (what can happen beyond the reaction)
  4. Resetting (how you can evade aggressive NPCs to reset them and try again)
  • Always remember: If an NPC cannot see you, they will not react to you. If an NPC cannot see you, they may still be able to hear you. And how far away from an NPC you are matters.
  • Aggressive NPCs (for example scavengers) will react to you at the maximum visual range if they have line of sight to you. The range of this is around three circles on the radar in good light and close to two circles if dark and they’re using a flashlight, much less if not.
  • When you are not visibly breaking a law, non-aggressive NPCs will react to you at the minimum visual range (which can be gauged roughly by the red circle on the radar).
  • When you get within the red circle, guards will attempt to scan you for bounties or stolen/forbidden goods. When you get within the red circle from workers, they will greet you.
These are the things you are not allowed to do in any settlement:
  1. Attack someone
  2. Carry any weapon (unholstered)
  3. Steal any item
  4. Trespass into restricted areas
  5. Scan someone who has a bounty or use any of the illegal modes on your tools
  6. Use your cutter or activate any panels that will set off an alarm

  • If you wish to remain undetected, it's important that you do none of those actions in visible range of any NPC at a settlement.
  • If an NPC is aggressive towards you then they will continue to hunt you down until either of you die or you continuously remain out of their visual range for around 30 seconds or so. If you can remain hidden for long enough then they will cancel their search for you and return to their usual patrol route.
  • It's not allowed to carry any weapon so you need to holster these when they're not in use. When a non-aggressive NPC sees this then they will warn you and tell you to put it away. So long as you do this quickly enough, they will leave you alone. If you do not do this or if they spot you doing it again, they will immediately turn aggressive.
  • When a guard scans you, you must remain close to the guard to allow them to complete their scan otherwise they'll automatically attack you. Watch for the message on your HUD and listen out for the audible cues. If you have a bounty or if you are carrying a traceable stolen item, or if you're carrying a mission item intended to sabotage operations in anyway, they will turn aggressive and attack you.
  • If a worker spots you trespassing, they will warn you and if you exit the restricted area, they'll let you off with that warning. If you do not comply or if they see you committing any other visible crime then they'll turn aggressive immediately.
  • When a settlement NPC turns aggressive, they will shortly begin to radio for assistance. If they do this and you don’t stop them in time, and the settlement alarms are enabled, the alarms will sound and the settlement will attack you.
How do you avoid detection?
The basic approach you should always take is:
  1. Don't get seen (use the environment to hide behind and use the rooftops)
  2. Be as quiet as you can. Crouch or walk and try to avoid making too many sounds close to NPCS if you're doing something wrong!
  3. If you're carrying something you shouldn't, avoid guards at all costs.
  4. Stay behind any NPC if you wish to remain undetected. Stay crouched!
  5. Remember to disable alarms!

Yes, I think in the general wall of moan, the actually pretty terrific stealth stuff isn't getting enough credit.
 
The ground gameplay is good - challenging without forcing the engineering grind on you to have a chance of even surviving. However, when you've got YouTubers with 600k followers saying the default guns and suits are crap, there's going to be a perception problem, particularly among those who don't have much FPS experience. The guns are just fine at default; engineering them is currently a bonus.

The guides are well put-together, clear and focussed. I wonder if you're a teacher.

Im at a mining settlement and can't find the alarm control panel using the Terminal. Do they exist in mining settlements?

And yes, I have level 3 clearance so can see everything...

I'm pretty sure they exist everywhere. What security clearance do you have? You'll need 2 in most cases.

If you're 2+ and you're there now can you please take a screenshot maybe? Like of the settlement itself. I may be able to help.

Thanks for the kind words, I've been overwhelmed with how positive everyone's being about the videos :)

I won't say much about my thoughts on other Youtubers but I made a decision not to spend a lot of time focusing on "opinion" pieces with my videos. I think that market is saturated enough. I try my best to only talk about facts as much as possible and try to verify everything I say following testing in game (and I'm always open to people letting me know where I've missed something or got it wrong so I can correct it!)

Not a teacher, but have had plenty professional training in my career for "how to train". So maybe that's helped. I personally think my biggest asset is I genuinly love the topic I'm talking about :)
Hah, that's amazing. I've not covered it and I probably won't. I love the idea of diversion tactics but I think my niche is doing stuff to remain entirely undetected where possible (and I think that strategy would fail any Covert mission).
 
Im here right now and according to the terminals there's no alarm control here. What would you like the screenshot of?
 
As above, it was 3. I got complete access, and despite meticulously looking at each room, there was no settlement alarm control.

In the end I snuck into the power core room, got the data and got out unseen. Plus a ton of titanium plating :D
 
Ydiss, I wonder if you could answer this one too: When things get messy and I have to put someone innocent down, I get an Interstellar Bounty by the Federation.

Going to the Interstellar Factor only allows me to pay off other fines, never those interstellar ones, and I have to go and turn myself in for the poxy 1k credits.

Is that a deliberate mechanic now or some sort of bug waiting to be fixed? It's such a faff and time sink.
 
Room listings frequently don't load in the terminals, even when we do have access. If you see it either showing no contents or not updating, you may want to try selecting a different building and retry. Yes, this is an obvious bug, as is the one where the first staff entry is blank.

Try finding an interstellar factor more than 20LY from that system (might have to go further if the bounty is with a faction spanning multiple systems) and you should be able to just pay it off there...
 
I think I already tried that approach a week ago. I went to Imperial space to pay it off, but no dice.

I'll try it again the next time it happens though just to make sure.

It worked for me a few days ago; you've got to be a fair distance from any system the bounty-issuing faction has a presence at though. I think it's a 20LY minimum.
 
bet you need both anyway(used exe on an unaware commando), unless plasma causes extra flash(someone from 3+ rings away came into the building looking for the cause)
Perhaps the guard reacted to the shouting of a dieing fellow not to the gunshot. Even without engineering mods when I kill target far away guards do not come to my position but rather to victim's body. And they even say "Oh, he is dead! Someone killed him/her."
