ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous | Odyssey: Roadmap

As a customer, and more importantly... as a shareholder, this is rather disappointing. We asked for a road map that deals with specific areas of concern from your customer base and you gave us a three week time frame that is as ambiguous as it gets.

We need clear goals on what you are working on, what the expected results are and concrete details on milestones and expectations - not this "many fixes including...." generality. This doesn't address anything at all, including what could be technically seen as a bait and switch from the in-game footage from the advertisement to the rather droll and disappointing reality that has been dished out, and then claimed it to be a full release.

How about you tackle specifics that have been asked about ad nauseum:
Video performance
VR Integration to include the entire game
Community Goal participation issues (no credit from ground wars in the BGS wars)
Network performance
Instancing issues
Joystick/DirectX Input improvements and accommodations
Server instancing performance

Mind you, this list is just what I could glean from five minutes thread hopping and getting a consensus of some of the more grievous shortfalls of this release.

Your customers deserve better than this, especially the ones who have been involved from the kickstarter days, and a close second... your shareholders demand better than this, and my money can invest in other things if this continues.

Well, on my current system (can't afford upgrades at the moment at all), I ran Horizons on max and loved it, even with the 1050 my laptop. Odyssey, on LOWEST settings is completely unplayable. Now I know I am going to get comments telling me to upgrade, but after this last year being out of work, that's not going to happen for a while. So basically, I have bought an 'expansion' that I can't play until at least the console release, or even after. This roadmap has basically said to me, "just keep playing Horizons until they ruin that with the Odyssey graphical 'upgrades' and shut up." I am disappointed; not a hater, just let down.

So you are admitting that we are playing a beta. There is no way in hell you can tell us that all the bugs and the poor performance were unknown to you when the list of things to fix is so large. The fact that you are going to fix the performance so close to the "console release" further tells me that you planned this all along. You shamelessly sold us an incomplete game.
F you FDev!

Greetings Commanders,

As mentioned in David’s forum post on 25th May, we would like to share our immediate roadmap for Odyssey and talk a little more about performance and improvements as we move towards the console release later this year.

We’d like to take a moment to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while we review your reports and feedback. We’ve been working hard to address critical issues - Update 2 went live yesterday, which followed Update 1, the previous 2 hotfix updates and server and stability fixes deployed in May. We have been seeing some awesome content shining through from Odyssey, but we know there’s still work to be done to make the experience as good as it can and to further address feedback.

To that end, here’s a short summary of our immediate roadmap of updates and the key focuses within them.

  • Update 3 – Thursday 10th June
    • Many improvements and fixes, including
    • Loadout UI flow changes
    • Adding earned ARX for on-foot gameplay
  • Update 4 – Thursday 17th June
    • Many improvements and fixes, including
    • Suit Livery UI flow changes
    • Codex CMDR stats
  • Update 5 – Thursday 24th June
    • Many improvements and fixes, including
    • Shared missions
    • Galaxy & system map UI updates
    • Outfitting UI updates
Each of Updates 3 to 5 will be of a similar size to Updates 1 and 2, and contain fixes and enhancements to the overall Odyssey player experience, including incremental performance issues for specific circumstances and/or system configurations.

Planetary geometry and lighting is a topic that we know is close to the hearts of many of our explorers, and is something we are looking carefully at. We will of course, continue to update you over the coming weeks as those investigations progress.

While we are expecting to see specific and targeted performance improvements in the upcoming June updates, we are also aware that development work for console will allow for even larger performance optimisations and enhancements for PC too. Therefore, we feel the best approach for all our Commanders will be to focus our development efforts after Update 5 on performance and the console release, and to bring our multi-platform community together once more, which will also allow us to bring even more global optimisation changes and updates to all Elite Dangerous Commanders.

Finally, we would also like to address the topic of communication. We are aware that many of you have been asking about greater communication, visibility and a change on how we share and update Elite Dangerous moving forward. While we do always try to give as clear a vision for the future as possible, such as Horizons or Beyond season roadmaps, we also must accept that this alone has not hit the mark. Our community have always been the beating heart of Elite Dangerous and we take the feedback very seriously. We are going to be working on new plans and initiatives that we can do to bring you even more in touch with our development progress. Starting with a monthly community update, we will highlight and share the progress that the development team have been making over that month. We will be sharing more details around this, and other initiatives, over the coming weeks.

Once again, we would like to thank you all for your patience, understanding and support as we continue to work hard to unlock the great potential of Odyssey for all Commanders.

O7

literally, thanks for nothing.

Don't get me wrong, but I thought the idea of a roadmap which most people want to see is FDev setting out their long term goals for Odyssey?

The above is just the next three weeks of fixes. which while obviously needed aren't exactly a long term vision for the expansion.

This can also be read as "as broken as this is right now, it will remain until AFTER we have fleeced moeny off the console owners, PC owners no longer matter to us as we already have their money, no need to invest more time on them".

Sorry for being that negative, but ... quite frankly, you've been paid for a product you haven't delivered. Your promise was a product that would run on the same hardware as Horizons is, with the same performance or better. This is NOT what you have delivered. Until such time as you DO deliver on that promise, I will recommend people do NOT hand you money, as they have nothing except your track record of broken promises to indicate that you will hold up YOUR end of a financial bargain.

This roadmap is - in short - a slap in the face. You're prioritizing the ARX-store cosmetics over the base functionality of the game.

To be fair, given the amount of bullets in the previous two updates I can't see them listing every specific thing under updates 3, 4, and 5. There'd be more bullets than a Texas man's cupboard and nobody would be able to follow it. (Add to that, the inevitable people getting cheesed off that something being addressed in update 5 isn't being done in update 3, or why are you doing this in update 3, that can wait, something else is more important) Case in point...

CAN YOU JUST GIVE US STABLE 60 FPS FOR THE GOD SAKE!!!!!!!!!!!.....

It's the little things missing that gets to me. Couldn't careless about FPS. Bring back the warning when getting to close to a sun or planet.
Played the game since the beginning and it's definately lost its way.

The poor sods trying to sort Odyssey out are damned it they do, and damned if they don't. Not picking on the two Cmdrs quoted above, but its the problem with a game of this scope - it means different things to different people, and trying to get everything sorted NOW for EVERYONE isn't going to happen.

The reality is that we're definitely doing a public beta. Proper release in a few months along with the consoles. Which, given everything that's happened with Covid and whatnot, I can understand development on Odyssey getting bogged down in 2020. What I can't understand is why they didn't just say that and offer the current iteration as a paid public beta for a small(er) amount which would be applied to the full game launch (PC and consoles).
