The Majority of Players, Play Elite as a Single-Player Non-PvP Experience?

I hate loathe and detest all griefers and playing in Open with other people. Playing in Private Groups or Solo suits my personality and temperament perfectly.

First up this isn't about solo vs open, so don't even go there. :D This is about how people play regardless of mode.

Here's an interesting stat. Naturally it's from YouTube, so comes with all the usual conditions (non scientific etc).

30k votes so far, representing a sizeable chunk of players.

Now, I'm known for being a solitarily exploration player - some of my video content is aimed at that. You would be excused then for assuming that my viewers are naturally similar. So, to balance out the audience, here's a question from Exigeous a very social player who is PvP focused.

And finally, another question from Exigeous about PvP.

See, this relates to one of my biggest "moans" about ED.

I'd like to see FDev set up a small team to create an update which is exclusively co-op, non pew-pew, gameplay.

Unless there's something I've forgotten, there's currenly nothing in ED which a lone player can't do by themselves - which seems like a bit of a shame in what is, after all, an online multiplayer game.
If FDev want to encourage people out of Solo and, ultimately, into Open, it'd be smart to create content which requires co-op play.

Sure, there'll be people who'll whine that "I only play in Solo so I can't do X and it's not fair"
Tough. There's heaps of other stuff you can do alone.
Also, let's face it, there's (almost) nothing stopping a Solo player venturing into PG's or Open, except their possibly less-than-friendly previous experiences of those modes.
If FDev create co-op content it'd change the balance of hostile vs friendly multiplayer experiences so people wouldn't immediately conflate Open with PvP in future.

Basically, ED needs more "puzzles" which require 2 or more players to complete.

Proper hazards and difficulties (explo, etc) and tough, "soft opt-in" (not auto-ignore POI) NPC challenges that motivate flying escort or teaming up to defeat endgame levels of threat would also help here, IMO.

Griefers have had an impact on my decision to play in solo almost exclusively. Any point of interest that would naturally gather players together has a tendency to attract seal clubbers.

...always play solo, if i want mmofps / pvp i play planetside 2, been a planetside player since the planetside 1 beta, been playing elite since atari st days ..god, i feel old suddenly..

I play solo but already killed a player in CZ a long time ago. fun fact i also play planetside 2 , seems that many elite players like this game  .
Why i play solo ? i have group chat , and i like freedom . Considering human behavior i prefer not being in open.

I love every aspect of the game tho and play sometimes in open.

I've made plenty of friends in elite and would be happy to actually play with them if fdev ever fixes and gives depth to multi crew

I mostly play alone (in open only). I would never join a squad that gave orders or made you feel like you were obligated to do some task. Elite is an open universe where you can blaze your own trail, why would I want to give control of my game time over to others? I do wing up with people occasionally but I would never join a group.

I was avoiding combat and exclusively playing in solo for a long time.

With Community Goals I started to enjoy some interactions (mostly PvP or P alongside P in Conflict Zones) and the local communication channel. I am too slow to post things myself though.
I also don't mind eating several hefty rebuys in a row any more, I got the cash. Bonds go pfft - so what; exploration data lost - well, I haven't done long range exploration for some time and the systems are still there etc.
I also notice that areas around stations are much emptier in solo than open, especially at CG destinations. Maybe this is a result of me playing on a laptop.

However, when it's about getting in top xx% to get that double engineered module, I want to accomplish something or don't have the time, then I am still in solo.
I found also serial interdictions to become very tedious, especially at power headquarter systems, so I mostly do Power Play trading in solo.
Now with the much poorer performance in Odyssey I found another reason to stay more in open.

I got several friend requests and didn't answer any of them, as I don't really know what to do with them. There were no messages attached to them, just some button pressed. So what's the point. Mind that I am still almost a stranger to the in-game communication system.

I only ever play in open when out exploring or by accident. Solo in populated space, especially during CGs.

Just too many griefers in high traffic space.

I socialise with other players, but mostly via Discord actually.
Our group is also more focused on exploration, or better, space faring in general. There's no political agenda attached, no BGS. We're more like a loose band of free pilots.

Doesn't mean I'm never meeting up with anybody, but I'm mostly on my own in the game.
When it comes to shooting, I do very little of that and never shot another player. My combat rank is at Competent after almost 6 years of playing now.

I'm not entirely sure if that's just the nature of the game I just me. Elite certainly doesn't really invite us to socialise I think. Space is vast, and the chance of meeting a player is very, very slim if not at a hotspot. And if you meet another player that doesn't mean interaction.
But of course there's also the fact, that Elite's social features are not great. Just yesterday I wanted to send a friend request to somebody, but couldn't do that because I can't search for other Commanders. I can only send a friend request if there was contact with them at some point, which is quite annoying (or is that function so well hidden that I didn't find it in 6 years?!)
There's also the chat, which is a bit clunky and hard to use while flying, the fact that we can only be member of one squadron which prevents creating more casual social "places" for events or loose activities and... This list is a bit longer. There's a lot of lost opportunities here for the community to interact ingame.

I play in Open 99% of the time...
I also play alone, 99% of the time...
...but I don't want to be alone!
Honestly - it's a thrill knowing another player could drop in on me at any moment...and if it wasn't for that thrill, I would have got bored and stopped playing years ago.

(Although - I'm never alone on Discord! 👍)

The poor state of the games networking for many of us is a part of why I don't really care for open or trying PvP. Game turns into a rubber banding mess anytime I have more than 2-3 other commanders with me in an instance. How some players manage to engage in 4 v 4 wing fights is beyond me. I don't even get how it is as bad as it is when I can play so many other MP games perfectly well, even some P2P ones, but ED just fails at getting me instanced, or fails at having the instance lag low enough to engage in anything approaching a fair contest.
More than a few times, I have even been interdicted, submitted, but the person that interdicted me never made it into my instance.
I gave up on the very idea of PvP in some of the first days of playing this game on my old account. Not because I did not think it would not be fun, but because it was always an asymmetrical lag fest. It was almost never a contest between anything even approaching equals, an in the rare occasions that it was, it was a lag fest. That may have something to do with geography, but it does not change that fact. These days, on my newer accounts, attempts at PvP with me is just a nuisance to me, so, I avoid other players. Usually, that means not playing in open anyplace live players might gather.

I play open only, as have done since first booted the gamne, about six months after launch. Other player ships are treated as high threat NPC unless convincing otherwise. Have a regular wingmate and while I appreciate artificial intelligence for what it is, actual intelligence will always be more unpredictable than any AI designed to work with all skill levels and game styles. As a result very game enhancing for me because the NPC are still very present but so are additional 'spec-ops-human' ships.

I play Mobius PVE PG 99% of the time (I only switch to Solo to avoid pad blockers and blocked/occupied CG CZs etc). Most of the time I play alone, although I would like to play with an active squadron for some small talk in chat, Co-Op missions and expeditions etc (I'm part of the Mobius squadron, but hardly anything is going on in there). I still haven't found the "right one" yet, so I'll probably start my own Squad (with blackjack&hookers) once FDev managed to fix Odyssey.

Hang on. Can't anyone with a YouTube account vote?

RIP, pointless poll.
