Game Crashes When Selecting Play Mode

The game is unplayable. I select my play mode (Horizons as I have not Purchased Odyssey yet thank god), the blue ship spins and the game just crashes. Ive tried network settings, verifying files, deleting the graphics options, uninstalling and reinstalling, windowed mode, 3d is off, and ive tried backing up and wiping my old save and starting a new one. This launch has literally destroyed the game for some people apparently and Frontier wont even acknowledge that the game is unplayable for some people. Granted I'm new to the game, but the 46 hours I have sunk into it the last week and the money I have wasted on Arx is all for nothing at this point.

Update: Last Hotfix finally finally fixed the game.

you are not alone. Still there is no other solution then deleting save :D

Guess we are not allowed to play XD

@Kingston what do you mean your system is not up to it? If it wouldn't be, i wont be able to play training, challange scenario, and after deleting save ;>
in some other topic, someone says that in dump file there is info that server cannot send you some proper info, so game crashes.

More than enough to run the game Mr. I have a bad ass system so i assume everyone else's isn't up to par....

If my system "wasn't up to it" i wouldn't be dumb enough to have a rant about a game that is broken for a lot of people. Your sarcastic comment contributes nothing to this thread made for those who ARE having issues and are frustrated.

Take your assumptions and elitist rubbish elsewhere while the rest of us peasants try to figure out why we can't play.

You'd be surprised at just how many people come on here ranting about the same thing, only to declare they are running an (old) Intel chip set.

So you may want to tone down the attitude a tad.

In any case, try updating your graphics drivers, loading up original Elite Dangerous (not Horizons) and if all else fails go into the games files and delete the file labelled gpuworktable (if I remember rightly) to force the game to rebuild it.

have you not noticed? gpu needs more grunt.
yes your specs should run it! low setting because you cpu is far too low!
posting that would have helped in the first place.

plenty to say on what to do to solve. though i doubt you would want it!

i did laugh at your post so i liked it :p(y)

seriously though your i5 is not good enough. you were lucky to have it running in the first place!

The problem is not the PC specifications of the players, but the damn updadte they made, the game worked well until they did the update. They have to be ashamed and fix their own . I bought the game less than 1 month ago Elite Dangerous: Horazion and I'm almost asking for my refund for this crap. These Fdevs are totally clowns.

  • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system.
  • OS: Windows 10 64bit.
  • Processor: Intel i5-8600 / AMD Ryzen 5 2600.
  • Memory: 12 GB RAM.
  • Graphics: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1060 (6 GB VRAM) / AMD RX 580 (8 GB VRAM)
  • DirectX: Version 11.
  • Storage: 75 GB.
^ Recommended specs for Odyssey. I was running the game fine on high settings pulling ~60fps until the update came out. My GPU has nothing to do with it.

Absolutely not, dont come to a thread just to tell to post some sarcastic rubbish without offering anything constructive or at the very least politely reminding that the specs would help.

Thank you for your suggestions although I did try those steps, with no result.

Greetings CMDRs, I'm experiencing something similar to the original poster. I have been enjoying ED on my current laptop (specs forthcoming) for some 2 years.
Here are the specs:

OS: Windows 10 Home
Processor: i7-7700HQ 2.80GHz
Memory: 16GB
Direct X version: 12
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060

I was able to play Odyssey from 5/19 to the evening of 5/22. From that point on, my attempts to connect to Open, Private, or Solo end up in a CTD.
When I try to play Horizons, I get an error stating that my Commander data cannot be retrieved, and to try in a few minutes.

I've submitted a ticket or two to FDev support, but I imagine they have their hands full right now. I hope there's another solution besides deleting my save. I have 1669 hours on Steam, apart from hours logged in on the old Xbox before I purchased the laptop. (I refuse to grind rank for the Feds or the Empire again. The thought gives me hives.)

If any of you have any suggestions, I'd appreciate hearing them. If not, I'll just wait for FDev to work it out, and (sadly) play No Man's Sky.

I am experiencing this too, I have reached out to Frontier but not heard anything back.

Currently in the starting area in and around the Shahur system, logged out and when trying to get back into either solo or open play it crashes to desktop.
I feel like this has something to do with the location we may have logged out in?

I have not purchased Odyssey and did not experience any issues prior to release.

OS: Windows 10 Pro
Processor: RYZEN 3900x
Memory: 64GB Gskill C16 3600mhz
Direct X version: 12
Graphics Card: Evga Ftw Ultra 3090

I believe my PC is over the recommended specifications.

Exactly the same behavior on my side, neither solo nor open play is working - but the training missions worked well. But the intresting part, i am also docked at a station in the Shahur System...support ticket is open but the first hint (epic launcher related issue) wasn't the cause.

Reset my commander to fix, may not be a fix for most people that want to keep their saves.

Exactly the same here too. It worked fine on Geforce Now until I logged off in Shahur. And same on normal PC.
This is crazy. I'm also in Shahur and I cant log back into my ship because I crash about 3 seconds into the loading screen. I was playing for 5 hours beforehand.
