Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

On the one hand, i wouldn't put it past them.

On the other hand, there is so much of that going on then i can only believe CIG would have been out of money a long time ago if they did.

On the other other hand, maybe that's why CIG never let up on the ship sales and marketing. Maybe their financials are in a much worse situation than even skeptics can guess at.
Ci¬G's finances certainly aren't as rosy as many would imagine. There seems to be a hint of desperation recently with the sheer amount of events and ship sales...it seems hardly a month goes past now before there's another push to the next one. They're concentrating on moving more ships into the production line too...potential (according to Ci¬G's mentality anyway) money spinners like the long awaited BMM and the Crusader Ares fighters, whilst the continued development of core tech and gamplay content is at an all time low, even by Ci¬G's standards.

I think they're struggling along between ship sales if I'm honest...the company itself is fine and dandy... which seems to be the primary focus of the management, the actual game development, not so much.

What I would give to be a fly on a wall of the tax office responsible for their consolidated accounts in California.

Aren't they still selling the modder's manual?
Yeah 10 bucks. But the ability to mod was tied to the private server functionality which we already know it won’t happen
  • Mod-able multiplayer (hosted by YOU)
  • This one goes there, that one goes there! Learn the ins and outs of modding Star Citizens’ private servers with this helpful guide. Want to create your own ship, modify a game mechanic or build your own planet? Look no further! (Digital version

We will not have a private version of the PU and SQ42 is been said it will be only single player.

I doubt they will allow us to load mods in the PU… so the only possible place for the modding is now SQ42 which as I said before is now single player… though a mod could bypass that?

that feature is in a weird place right now…

I know it might be "new" to this thread (it's not) but the debate about how many actual players SC attracts has been a really interesting topic for a lot of years now. In my opinion, SC is supported entirely by around seven to ten thousand massive whales, each spending between $5,000 and $10,000 a year. SC really gets zero (and I mean zero) interest in the mainstream gaming community or is welcomed with an immense amount of negativity anywhere outside the true believer's bubbles.

It's a hardcore, niche game and that doesn't attract a lot of casuals -- which is exactly what most backers feel is good for the game (hint: it's not).

Nah. Maybe a rotating group of whales, but it isnt the same group of people year over year.

That person's "join" date. zero to insane in a year....

3 - 4 grand in a year.

That's because you're part of the old guard of whales. The fresh new whalers who were sold CoD in space are the new whales. They don't care about what CIG did and promised years ago. They only care about the current vision.

Once they are tapped out, CIG can move onto the next demographics which i believe is checks notes

Animal Crossing... .but in SPACE!
I'm not a whale though, not any more...small angry dolphin perhaps :D

What I always find disturbing in these ship threads is how "encouraging" other whales are to others spending money. Maybe it's a way to make up for their "If everyone is doing it I can't be wrong, can I?" thoughts.

This is pretty typical among collectors of whatever. They form a community around collecting whatever, collect specimen of whatever and show off with their collections of whatever in front of other collectors, implicitly convincing them to collect more of whatever. The great circle of pledges continues.

Oh, certainly there's whale churn. You can see some of the burned out whales with closed wallets here in this very thread, across Reddit and even on SA -- although it really does feel that there's an endless supply of other whales willing to take their place.

Heck, according to r/SC_trades there are a select few who continue to chase the "up uP UP" market of ships and buy in at massive amounts. Somehow, like clockwork, they manage to find endless buyers who are interested in several hundred -- or thousand -- dollar pre-release or unplayable DLC ships for a pre-alpha niche space game with ridiculously high hardware requirements.

Twitch has an abnormal movement of people who do "donation rallys" for their preferred streamers (usually light-clad females who breath into the camera) where the only objective is "LETS SUPPORT <whatevername> LETS DO THIS PEOPLE!!!! <3<3<3<3" and I ve seen tens of thousands coming together within a few minutes because these people just throw money at the screen trying to outbid each other for digital "likes"

Simps....is the term when it regards female individuals, not sure what it would be for anything like a digital scam

Yeah, this lines up with what i think. Apart from some obvious exceptions, there is a rotating door of whales who come, splurge, then leave (aka, put the game down or like Mole, follow but don't spent more) until release.
