Dynamic ranks

This is an idea to give meaning to the "Elite" badge and, as a side-effect, help player retention. Instead of having the ranks be fixed milestones, have them represent actual ranks, your percentile within the player base. To get Elite you would have to be in the top 5%, for example. It could be handled on a curve so the lower ranks go quicker. And something would have to be done about the various exploits that let people cheat ranks. But it seems to me like it would make the rank mean more than just tacking on Roman numerals. Even though it would mean I'd lose my Elite rank.

The problem with this is that there are some rather deeply embedded associations, such as Founder's World and Engineers, attached to ranking.

I will freely admit that I didn't care for that, but it is there.

Of whatever. Top 5% combat/bounty payments. Top 5% cargo profit.
So in order to maintain my Elite rank I have to just go to a RES and mash the left mouse button down more than the other guy this week? Or bore myself to death doing AB runs?

The good thing is that on a weekly basis these contests exist - CGs. There people out shoot and out haul each other for big rewards and to get onto the top of the leaderboards.

That at least means more than having it just because you got it 3 years ago.

Except that you haven't attached any meaning to it except a leader board. The fallacy with That lay in the fact that I am not playing for competition, so any value in the game you associate with rank is linked even more aggressively with game play that I am uninterested in.

In theory a top 5%, top 10%, top 20% etc leaderboard would add to the existing competitive aspect of the game, but that couldn't be linked to Elite rank without fundamentally changing the design of the game or teeing a lot of people off🤔 ...

As alluded to by others, without being Elite, you can't access the exclusive "Founder's World" system, Shinrarta Desra with its' special station and one of the engineers, with some of the engineers also requiring you to be Elite.

Also in particular, a hard cap of 5% only, would lock out many people, punishing many for no reason, anyway just my two cents 🤔😀 .
