Odyssey is making me want to play the game less

TLDR: game is too difficult in general and makes me play less or not at all.

Let me begin by saying I am a huge fan of Elite Dangerous. I have logged many, many hours of enjoyment on regular ED and Horizons.

Odyssey is having the reverse impact.
I have been playing it for about two weeks now and a couple big things have come up.

1. is it just me or are the NPC ridiculously hard? I am not new to FPS games but dang, Frontier, this is some next level .
I just got done fighting 10 raiders at a settlement. I shot them with ALL of my ships ammo, to no affect.
Then I found out that you could kill them easily by ramming them????
so that's what I ended up doing?

2. I'm a big fan of the trading and mining and space battle grinding, but grinding all the items for suits and weapons is a little much.
calm down a bit on requirements and items for upgrades.

3. auto land feature is annoying and i turn it off.

overall: the addition of odyssey is a nerds dream realized; being able to fly around space and exit the ship on planets and stations!
however, the insane NPC level of combat resistance, overbearing requirements for upgrades and changing galaxy map interface are big losers in my book.
so much so, that I now regret purchasing the odyssey expansion and play less every week.

please, please, please, please, please frontier, do the right thing and fix these errors in judgment. make this game all it can and should be and I'll return.

ultimatly, games come down to one thing for me.....is it fun? well, the balls in your court frontier. do you want more money from me or not?

Right now I suspect the most resources are allocated to just making the thing run without crashing.

The next thing will be to make the thing run well enough on consoles so that it might get accreditation.

Gameplay loops or fun factor are probably more in the future.

If you want to have more impact, I suggest writing a detailed and honest review of your experience on Steam. Financial Analysts and future investors probably look at Steam reviews as an indication of customer satisfaction. As an indication of whether to invest in Frontier.

Frontier Developments will not change without significant negative financial impetus. They have listened to us only as it pleases them.

:(

1. Re NPC's, yes, it's you. Why would you try to kill them with your ship? Your targetting can't hit such a small target. Mission NPCs are far too easy to kill in a SRV. Even on foot, unless you get cornered somewhere, they are pretty easy to handle solo. Personally, I've yet to die in a ground CZ.

2. So buy pre-graded gear. I bought three G3 suits - one of each type. Then sold my G3 Dominator when I found a G3 Dominator with Extra Ammo, and bought that one. As for weapons, all of mine are G3 or G2 with a mod - all purchased. I'll upgrade/mod them when I end up with enough mats.

After a few trial runs in Oddity, I went back to Horizons and am doing my old thing.

I may go back and try Oddity in six months or so, but that is not a certainty. We'll see.

I quit playing altogether, will never buy another frontier product and the extent of my involvement with ED is to come on here and reddit and snipe at frontier for the low effort cash grab cons they are.

Im actually thinking about contesting the transaction with my bank and looking up frontiers NA legal contact.

Im going to give it till the last patch in june, and then im gonna start raising hell (limited to those actions allowable by law in my local jurisdiction) if it doesnt turn out to be A LOT better..

You are supposed to kill them with your guns, not your ship (I hear missiles work though).
Killing a NPC takes less than 5 seconds with standard gear. I use a laser pistol to take down their shields and the assault rifle to finish them. It only gets difficult if you get swarmed, so move constantly, gain some distance, go to cover, make sure not more than 1-3 NPCs can see you. Focus on one enemy at a time, otherwise you are just fighting their shields instead of killing them.

I haven't done any engineering / upgrades and I can easily kill 10-15 scavengers.

I'm the same - I have many many hours in Elite, I have 3 accounts and two are double elite ranked and they other is elite once.

I actually really enjoyed playing the Alpha release of Odyssey.
So far every single time I've loaded Odyssey and tried playing it for a while something has happen that made me just want to exit the game and not bother playing again.
The bugs.
The really bad performance in settlements that's contributed to me dying.
The broken crime system has made me quit 3 times so far. ( respawning in a prison ship for a 500cr fine that I never had a chance to pay off is just plain crazy and so damn frustrating )

I'll probably give it another try next Thursday after update 4, just to see if anything is any better, but frankly the thought of actually trying to play properly to achieve anything is not appealing at all.

Odyssey is currently the most disappointing update to the game ever and may be the one that finally makes me uninstall for good.

You need missiles (or mines). I mounted two size 2 missiles on my Asp Explorer, and the most scavengers I had left over after blasting from the air was two. The base gets “angry“ with you (turning red), but at most you can get a fine (damaging defences) if the power is off. (Dealing with powered settlements takes way more effort.)

The SRV contacts panel lets you know what you are up against.

Don’t leave your ship on the ground, and recall it about a kilometer away from the settlement so that the defences don’t take it out if you power it up. System defence ships will also blow up an unattended ship near a settlement (no idea why).

If you hit them with missiles, the only challenge is dealing with any that survive the missiles, or if a dropship drops off more. You are supposed to be able to hear the dropship, but I’ve missed that, and so you need to be careful.

I am playing Borderlands 3, a fps shooter looter, now.
It's really impressive how Borderlands 3 devs (Gearbox) obviously took pains to ensure a challenging yet still fun player progression. From the very beginning, every level of gameplay is carefully constructed for clarity, meaningful engagement and more awareness on the part of the user.

Odyssey fps could have learned from the many successful fps games about player progression and adjusted it to Elite Dangerous precedent.
