State of the Game

people want immersion, they also want a game. the two aren't mutually exclusive in a sci fi space game. You dont need to simulate the boring actual reality of space travel any more than you need to simulate the mundane tedious tasks of life in a first person shooter to have a decently realistic and fun one.

you dont need to abandon the 1:1 galaxy to get players on board with it taking a long time to get to some destination if they're busy with fun gameplay during the journey. Rather than just what we have now.
Problem is MMO. They can't have time skipping or time acceleration (at least in their framework).... and there's no mod options to increase (or decrease) travel speeds.

FWIW, I do think they should experiment with tweaking travel times (SC accel/decel, etc)...... ideally they'd have a test server where people could login, test and give feedback on stuff like this. Heck, I bet people would even pay for access to the test server :)

Nah, just let the community vote on it - that always makes everyone happy

One man's gameplay content is another man's timesink.
It was ever thus.

only if you expand the definition of content to be so generalized that it constitutes anything and is thus a useless word.

Valid and useful gameplay during travel to another system would involve tests of piloting skill in making it there. With benefits provided for success that improve things like time to reach the destination or perhaps uncovering a USS with beneficial commodities / materials that you otherwise wouldn't have that you can use. Or perhaps during your journey, you are contacted to participate in a holo control combat zone for a faction you recently visited the station of and you can drop into an SLF in the middle of a CZ fight while your ship is being controlled by your npc crew .... and if something unexpected happens in your real ship you'll be pulled out of the holo control instantly, but while you're there you can earn credits / bonds etc.

lots of different ways to create something that is actually beneficial to the player and meaningful to the game to fill in the vast empty nothingness that players deal with without resorting to pausing their progression with some optional nonsense that they'll just opt out of because it offers them absolutely nothing useful.

if they wanted to eliminate dead time with making things take less time to do they can do that even with MMO. They've been doing that for a while now with increases to jump range and even some tweaks to SC travel.

the whole point of the game is to have these destinations take time to get to. So they'll never just optimize them out.
(especially when hello games made fun of them during kickstarter for having SC be the way it is... fdev isn't going to admit to being wrong...so it's double down instead)
