Nah - look for them as mission rewards - they're common rewards like (all?) engineering requirements.
Can you tell us if Smear Campaigns are in game yet? Anyone find one with the update?

Both are really common. I've managed to get both enough for whatever mods I needed them for.
Just remember that quieter footsteps is currently locked behind Yarden anyway, so unavailable at least until update 5 and possibly later. Quieter footsteps and Audio Masking are her two exclusives and I want them both but have to wait. I'm not going to bother buying a suit or Exe with either of them on (too rare anyway) to then upgrade them fully and totally waste the two G5 items I have already upgraded and are waiting for these two mods to slot in. I'd rather just wait until smears are done.
So you've got ample time to find and complete the missions required if this is a goal for you. But of course if you do see the perfect premium item that has footsteps on, no harm in buying it anyway.
I did just buy a Dominator with quieter footsteps (not because I want to use it but because I want to test it) and I'll be reporting my findings when I have tried that out. I've got a feeling this mod won't be worth the effort.

I bought one of them a few weeks ago and it is noticeably quieter. Whether it is quiet enough to avoid triggering the nosy NPCs when you're sneaking about I'll leave to you as you've done a lot more stealth work than me.
There are probably more people like myself enjoying playing it and not coming to the forums?
There has been an awful lot of political infighting, both between major factions and corporations. There has also been a lot of CGs on this stuff of late.Which makes me think... if all illegal stuff are meant to be uploaded... no wonder we have not seen the Smear Campaigns, even tho they "are" in game
From a theory craft perspective, that seems like the kinds of places that smear campaigns would be? May be?
Now if only they'd do CGs where the on foot requirement was something like "covertly upload data" at settlements in a system related to a faction. Or assassinations. Or stealing items and so on.
So much scope for CGs to be wildly more entertaining than they are now (if you own Odyssey of course; if you're in Horizons, you get to still grind trade routes if you like

Patch 5 happens next thursday... even so, it was not a promise... just that they're aiming to get the Smears sorted in Patch 5
Oh, I understand they will increase drop chances in Update 5 as well as make it drop organically where we expect them to drop...
Thing is, I'm still skeptical that these are in game right now, as mentioned by FDev. Something about infinite monkeys, typewriters and Shakespeare.
I think patch 5 is postponed with one week for 1st.
I kinda am not bothering to hold my breath for this anymore, it comes when it comes. Headed back out into the black and am having a great time finding new and interesting plants. It's obvious that whatever's been said by the devs; we still have seen neither sight nor sound of what's supposedly implemented, in-the-game, just a tad hard to find.

Want to know the same - confirmation that these are still NOT in the game or I'd like to see evidence of when and where they've been found. Seems clear they don't exist and given this has happened several times in the past (Exqusite Focus Crystals weren't in the game for months years back, Modular Terminals, etc)

Unfortunately, we probably can only hope for the latter, since Fdev has already stuck their neck on and swore blind that it's in game its unlikely that they'll reverse course and admit that its not. Honestly all they need to do is throw a cryptic hint at us and I'm 1000% sure someone will find one (I mean... there are already spreadsheets complete with graphs and regressive analysis charts tracking the search in almost every conceivable permutation of every dataport... this community is amazing that way)
This is why despite their assertion I do not believe them as there is zero evidence. As the great Carl Sagan is know for saying "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence". I've seen none.

1) They can be found in extremely rare 'edge case' scenarios involving Superpowers, Elections, and other secret in-game logistics expertly put together by Fdev Dr's, Dentists and Architects.
2) ".....campaign has a 'g' in it?"
Going by Fdevs' track record, I'm betting the mortgage on it being number 2.

Other options: Smear Campaigns are not in game because the last engineer is somehow connected with the gameplay that is not in the current beta yet (anti-thargoids mods for guns?) This also explains why they delayed patch 5 for a week and Smear Campaigns fix is a part of it. Just a theory, you know =)
yeah they're gonna release it alongside that secret other build they had after the alpha that fixed all of the alpha-reported issues that they've been sitting on until now, also it'll have ship interiors
And all those steam reviews are just a couple of angry guys with multiple accounts.
