Can we close the VR sub-forum now?

We will have to wait and see what exactly they meant by "no future Vr support other than current bug fixes",

While the livestream did sound like that there will be no more VR support whatsoever, we also know that fdev has been intentionally vague and ambivalent in many of their statements and there is a good chance that they will backpedal at some point.

Most people seem to be under the impression that VR support will continue in terms of fixing VR specific bugs, but I take that with a grain of salt for the time being. I already fell for the "VR legs after console launch" implied statement so I will be extra cautious this time around. I just don't share people's optimism. What is ironic though is the same people who are saying "fdev never said they plan on adding VR legs after console launch" are the same people who are now saying "oh yeah fdev will continue to work on VR bugs and optimization" in spite of fdev's statement to the contrary.

I think Frontier were very clear, which btw I'm in no way suggesting players and the community 'shoot the messenger' in fact kudos to the community manager for having the integrity for stating the truth.

The truth however is really not good if you in any way think, believe, want, hope, pray, imagine, assume <choose the words you want> that VR is in anyway important to Frontier right now you might as well be on the Nintendo or ZX Spectrum platform hoping for support one day......

VR support has vaporised and now we know. Ball is in Frontier's court, its their play next...

Frontier have recently said the following two related things (paraphrased):

1. We're going to give you more straight forward and open answers, even if it's news you don't want to hear. Unless a feature is under active development or we can see it on a roadmap, we'll say there are no plans for it.
2. We'll fix bugs, but there are no plans for further featureful VR development, including Odyssey on-foot gameplay

Fixing bugs aside, from the above I'd say we should assume that on-foot VR is neither under development nor on any current development roadmap. As @BigBANGtheory [VR] said, kudos to them for being straight.

That's not to say VR will never be on the development roadmap - what they definitely did NOT say on stream was "we're never touching VR again", whatever some in the community heard - and we really have no idea at this stage how far into the future their internal roadmaps stretch beyond the planned console launched in the autumn. That said, VR for Odyssey is decidedly non-trivial to implement well. Even just turning on headlook has implications for the HUD elements and interactions, neither of which seem to have been designed in an especially VR-friendly way.

At this stage I think it's more realistic to ask them to concentrate on smaller VR-specific fixes and quality of life improvements to make the VR we do have suitable like:

  • fixing the remaining VR bugs and performance issues (though I think many of the bugs from this old thread have since been fixed)
  • changing the grey background for a black (or at least dark grey) one in cinema mode so it's not as distracting
  • allowing the user to customise the distance from the virtual screen for those who want it bigger / smaller

I respect your optimism, but the hard truth is that VR is a minority of the gamers playing elite, which means that frontier aren't too bothered about piddling off minorities (speaking as an ex mac player)

Ah, don't get me started on the Mac client. To be fair, that was at least 50% Apple's fault for being... well, Apple. Literally the only reason I own a Windows machine is because I wanted to continue playing Elite post Horizons.

I'm definitely not optimistic on the future of VR in Elite when it comes to the on-foot gameplay. It's not even really about us being a small fraction of the Elite playerbase; VR in Elite worked especially well in ships and SRVs because you were playing from a seated position and your interaction with the world was through abtract interfaces. That's not the case with on-foot gameplay, and I'm not entirely convinced that there's an implementation that would satisfy VR and non-VR players who have to inhabit the same instances.

I think what I was trying to say is that the folks saying VR in Elite is dead seem to be missing that that's not actually what the CMs said; they said there was no planned VR development beyond bug fixes. Interpreting that as "Elite VR is forever dead" is just as bad as interpreting "not at launch" as a promise to implement it sometime later. When the CMs' explicit intent is to be straight with us, I think it's worth interpreting what they say literally rather than trying to read between the lines.

Just to let you know, I update the bug list every day - so what you see is the current situation.

The only fixed bugs are the ones in the last section of the post.

Please vote & add confirmations if you haven’t already 👍
Ah, my mistake, and many thanks for your efforts to collect and update those. I read through the list and saw a few I thought had been mentioned as fixed but I'd made a few too many assumptions about what the actual bugs were based just on the accompanying text in the thread.

TBH I've never been a FPS player, preferring open ended space sims. FD are committed to VR for Horizons, so best to keep your thinking to EDO me thinks. I'm sure they will sell plenty to FPS players without VR.

At least a full VR view would already help a lot of us to stay in the game... that this works is already shown by the vanity cam, which works in VR when activated while on foot.

"No more VR support other than current bug fixes"

sounds pretty straightforward to me. Currently reported bugs that can be implemented into the existing roadmap will be fixed, but after that, that's the end for VR support.

Eg, new bugs that might pop up as new content is added to Odyssey will not be addressed.

Edit: I do however share the hope that fdev will pick it back up again in a few years perhaps.

Don't nail me down on a specific citation please :)

But yes, there are some transcripts in this forum.
The gist was "There are no plans for furthering VR support beyond bugfixing.". Later Zac, after being asked in the chat said that it is as it is at the moment. This was reiterated later by Arthur when they called them in to the stream.

I personally think that "at the moment" was only fluff to keep the people calm but that's just my speculation.

I suppose it is a matter of interpretation then.

Well, one can hope.
