What the heck kind of heat map is this?!

Honestly, F-dev, I just can't. There enough other reference implementations for what a heat map should look like out there. Go watch the Predator, for example.

I'm sick and tired of going down to the surface to find brain trees and I don't see anything for literally 20 minutes while I'm in the blue. This is garbage!

And why the heck doesn't my radar do anything to show bio/geo sites like it did in Horizons. So frustrating.

And another thing - why can't I bring up any type of heat map or change a filter when I'm closer to the surface? I have to remember the areas that were covered from space?

Layer on the fact that draw distance for trees has been dramatically reduced in Odyssey where you can only see trees when you're practically on top of them. This makes it difficult to find them.

So let me sum it up:

  • Near worthless heat map
  • Can't see heatmap near the surface
    • Can't set different geo/biology filters for heatmap while on surface
  • Limited draw distance and can't see anything until on top of it
  • Removed / worthless surface radar for POIs
  • I am just getting more and more irritated playing this game.
    • Exploring is like hide and seek in the dark without a flashlight

I think it just shows you where flowers can be. I'm not sure it's necessary to demonstrate heat. It is a bit ugly though. I actually never found it to be of much use, either, given it disappears as soon as you drop.

Painting the whole planet like this is what it always does and is near useless.
It's not useful, no.

A bit like the secondary mode of the analyser isn't much use and could probably actually show us where the next scannable item might be if within 1km or something.

I don't think changing the "heatmap" to a "heatmap" is the solution though. I'd rather it just actually show you where flora was by using a population scatter.

Because there aren't any, geo is all over the place like the bio, the map doesn't generate points for geo anymore. For instance the below picture, I flew for 20klm or 30klm's along this valley before I gave up looking for the end, it just goes on endlessly, this is what geo is like now, as for the heatmap, apparently some players in the Alpha found it confusing;

There are no geo sites, it's just general geo areas, you actually have to look. Either side of this valley was endless desert in the blue zone, so I flew towards this valley as a demarcation zone, studied the surrounding geography, and there it was.

A (somehow related) question:
Are those features actually displayed when flying in a ship?
Because the last time I flew over a planet I’ve already scanned the plants on (so I knew it existed and that “grass” was everywhere), I couldn’t see any from my cockpit. And I flew really, really low ... I mean, sparks from the undercarriage low.

Is this a general effect so you have to disembark to find anything?
Was the grass just too small to be displayed and larger plants are actually rendered?
Or was I merely unlucky and simply didn’t fly over the right spots?

And there NEEDS to be some way to turn the b*^*^y thing off. Makes any sort of pretty screenshot around planets hopeless once you have done a DSS and have said heatmap making the whole planet some kind of blotchy blue. You can't even turn the DSS module off to get rid of it (WHY not??)!

Set the hud to combat mode.

Working as designed, but not as desired.
You'd prefer they added another key bind/panel function to turn that off, instead of just turning the mode off? It doesn't display anything else on a planetary map, you either want it on or you want it off. I understand the initial feedback of this thread but are we now going to start asking Fdev to add in additional functions to switch the analyis mode planetary overlay on or off instead of just using the existing method which works perfectly well?

Just feels a little "yeh but this, but this, but this" to me. I think quite a few people will agree with your OP somewhat so I'd take that as a win. I don't think too many will agree that we need to overcomplicate the process on the basis that someone on for forum forgot we can switch modes before they complained about it.

I also see repeating patterns in the heatmap the OP provided, but we know FDev are aware already.
