Trigger-Happy Security Guards

So I was just doing a pretty ordinary mission, picking up documents from a base and bringing them back. In the process, I happen to accidentally run by an NPC trying to scan me. I run a little too far and all hell breaks loose. Alarms, people chasing me, etc. I mean, do I have to get scanned by every NPC I pass by? And it wasn't like I was trying to escape her. I had my volume up pretty loud, but I still couldn't hear them tell me to stop for a scan. I think there should be a bigger visual warning that you're being scanned, because I had no idea. I barely made it out of there with my life.

Unfortunately, in the process of escaping I killed someone. So I had to turn myself in so they could send me to prison.

Fun stuff.

You get scanned once every 2 minutes (you can ignore guards for 2 minutes after one scan). You need to be careful. You get two warnings when they want to scan you, one is audible (they tell you to stop) the other is on the HUD, top right.

You just need to be wary and pay attention to the guards in the first place (watch them and be aware of where they are). On this particular mission, it pays to just run right up and get scanned and then carry on for 2 minutes.

PS before anyone asks, the two minutes is to stop players just getting scanned immediately and then forever ignoring guards from then on. The guards are a part of the game's challenge. You didn't need to avoid them on this mission but you have to abide by their rules. So watch for the scan and don't rush about.

In ships during scan we have a red text in the middle of our screen.
On foot, when the shields are down, we have a big red icon telling us so.

I think we definitely could use a better visual warning during on foot scan (especially when not complying results in player‘s death).

No problem with this. I think people will still get caught out if they're missing both audio and current visual cues though. I think quite a bit of of the time it's players rushing, jumping or just not paying much attention and, initially, it'll be players who just don't know anything about the game yet. Not saying that's always the case. But let's put it this way: This doesn't catch me out and never has done to date because I always spot the warning. So I think it can be made more obvious, I just don't know if that'll be the fix for everyone.

Yes, I agree but right now, even when I know what to expect, I wander around settlements while constantly looking in the upper right corner (because even the audio cue is too low - and I have the NPC voices slider all the way up).

The warning should be more “in our faces”.

Yea this needs refining, a guard was on a platform and decided to scan me but got the hump cos I walked up the stairs towards him..... So I murdered everyone 😂😂😂😂

Boss, I did my first successful Covert theft. I wanted to thank you, sincerely, for those videos. You be the man\person. Absolutely nothing but experience good and bad can allow anyone to be successful. The information you provided was key to my success.

It could be done the same way Valve do their "in play" tutorials. It's on the basis of this:

1) First time it triggers, it's in your face, big red letters, making it obvious
2) if the player demonstrates by their actions that they understand it, the next one is less overstated
3) if the player demonstrates they continue to understand it, the warning (tutorial) disappears entirely.
4) if the player misses the prompt, it remains at its initial overt state

Obviously in this case you always want the warning but maybe it could work that way. I'd get tired of the big red letters but not if it changed after I'd shown I understand the warning. You can even "move" the warning into the corner, much like it works in ships, the first times.

Indeed, those video guides are absolutely indispensable to the discreet player, and have saved me from many a gruesome and untimely death.

With some refinement, I sincerely believe the "sneaking game" portion of Odyssey has the potential to be one of its greatest triumphs, and that's just one part of a very large package.

In the meantime, let's keep our heads down, scan everything, stop when warned and avoid doing anything crazy, like trying to peacefully walk past a guard in a corridor without being threatened with immediate execution.

You have to stop for scans. I do think they need to be louder and maybe a bit more obvious and less hair trigger but if tou just run right past the scan there’s nothing wrong with them getting blasty with you.

Would be nice if one could at least stop, put one's hands in the air, and de-escalate the situation, clearing up any misunderstandings... :7

I don't have trouble noticing the scans, but sometimes I'm enjoying the low gravity too much and flying away already when the request comes. I think there should be a 'high alert' status between 'all is peaceful' and 'kill the intruder' stages. Refusing a scan would be one thing to trigger this 'high alert'. The guard would radio everyone that there is something fishy going on and all the security would start looking for you, insisting for the scan. If you act sus when this is going on, by refusing another scan for example, they'd move to 'kill on sight'.

My question is this: Do all security guards detect stolen loot on your person or only some of them?
I had some loot on me one mission and get scanned and its instadeath time again. Next mission same thing happens and I'm expecting instadeath again and she just gives me the usual speech and ambles off.

Which is ironic because in space they don't care if you stop or not.
