Oculus rift PC full crash every time with odyssey patch 4.

So I've almost given up after playing this game since start, then on VR from day one, the last 2 updates...3/4 have killed my Oculus and my pc just shuts down within moments of starting. Fine in 2d but that's a downgrade. Below is my bug submit to them but I don't hold out much hope and can't play the game until the next update. Thought I'd go on here and ask, there are so many complaints about VR bugs but I can't find one that has this complete PC crash every time. I have Aorus 1080ti 11gb water cooled and have played 100s hours on ED before odyssey.
One question I do have, how do I run just horizons in VR, for 2d, the start box comes up for ED and you can choose between your different options of ED, but if I start in VR with Oculus, it just starts the latest one with no other option. Guess I can uninstall odyssey and have just horizons? not sure. Any other ideas then please shout them out, I miss the game .

After last 2 updates 3&4, (can't be sure which one broke it), I cannot play the game in VR. I have...
1) uninstalled from steam and used oculus only
2) complete new install into oculus
3) game runs fine in 2d
4) updated drivers for gpu
5) reinstalled windows completely and installed only oculus and game...again!
6) removed any other usb devices or hardware...in other words, pc was only going to run ED
7) run other games in VR...no problem.
8) given up.

I've tried with the lowest setting in VR to see if that helped in all this and it still crashes. Sometimes immediately, sometimes a few seconds into loading up and continuing my game but never longer than a minute in the game and when I say crash, I'm talking about my PC turning off completely with no warning or messages anywhere....just thunk...off.

OK, so it appears that the game is now not supported in VR. Lot of people complaining about it and rightly so. I have requested a refund but we all know that won't happen.
So back to my question, how do I run horizons now after installing odyssey? in oculus, it only install 'elite dangerous', which is odyssey now?

After starting Odyssey via the Oculus launcher, quit the game, and select Horizons from the Elite Dangerous launcher that should still be open. I'm not sure how long Horizons will last but I'd imagine at least until the console release of Odyssey.

No, No, No

Make a short cut to the ED.exe on your desktop, click it, after the ED launcher pops up on your desktop, start Steam VR, once Steam VR is running then choose EDH in the menu and it should run 1st try every time.

OK, all good ideas there, thanks. I also found an EDlauncher app that helps you set up what you want before you launch and you can set up non VR option in that.

it seems to be for me, I was happy playing odyssey in VR, did not care about the walking and running firing gun bit, not interested, only interested in flying ship, so I thought no problem. But update 3&4 has killed my VR completely. Fine in Horizons, but it will crash my pc very quickly in odyssey, so I guess they are not fixing that for some time.

And that is my problem, for some reason the last 2 updates have killed VR in flying. I know there are bugs and it's glitchy because I've flown 50hrs in EDO with not one pc crash. I came back from holiday, did the 2 updates and boom, within seconds of playing it crashes my pc...completely unusable. But fine in Horizons. Have reported bug but nothing yet.

Well hang on, I might be onto something here. I fired up EDO using EDProfiler and managed to get it running on lowest settings known to man, but it hung after a bit. So I underclocked my GPU and GPU memory to make it super stable (watercooled Aorus 1080ti 11Gb), and it ran OK on the lowest VR setting...well it ran ok for 30mins, I need to keep playing to try more out. So all is not lost.
Clearly they did something to the last patches though and even at that setting, (my GPU is not even getting out of bed), it's glitchy. So there is hope. In horizons though, maxed out, things look nice.
I've never spent so long getting a game working since I used to write games from the atari user magazine on my 800xl back in the day! It is quite bad of Frontier to release such a shoddy mess, but I've played since 85', so I'm not giving them up yet.

Your PSU is now not up to the task anymore. It will still cope with other tasks but is no longer stable with the power draw that is being asked of it in VR /Elite/Odyssey.
It is quite a common occurrence what you are experiencing and most quality PSU don't fail they just weaken over time .You will find your problems should go away with a new PSU.
In the event log when you turn PC back on are you getting Event 41?
If so then there is a small chance it is a temperature problem but that would normally give a different Event entry or a BSOD not a complete power down.
You will probably go around in circles until you either try a different PSU to test (if you have one) or just replace yours.

That's defo not the case, I know what you mean though. I run far more challenging things than elite and my power supply fan never comes on because it's very much bigger than it needs to be. I ran some CPU load modules to make sure it was not something else on my machine but that's not the issue. Could be the latest updates they have done just do not agree with the latest drivers I have, I run other VR games that are far more taxing and actually work my GPU hard with no issue at all. I tracked the usage after getting EDO working on lowest settings and I could almost hear my system drumming it's other hand on the desk wondering when I'm going to start :)
Just run it at medium settings in VR and it seems ok ATM, that's still with my GPU underclocked though....convinced it's code issues, but at least I can get out there and find those atmospheres.

Oh wow, update 5 fixes all! I can now run full graphic spec in EDO with not one single crash out, that is, everything turned up to full, something has been fixed.
Also noticed the surface scanner is fixed now and is actually usable, rather than the random control it had before.
So nice to use EDO again. hardly any glitches and I played for a good few hours over the weekend. Also noticed that the game loads up in VR a bit quicker too. Yes, I still have to go to VR 2d thing when scanning plants but that's all I'm probably going to use it for these days, so no big issue there. Maybe one day they'll fix that too, but for now...I'm off into my next long trip looking for new stuff.
For me a solid fix for VR.
Fly safe.
