State of the Game

Still, to bring this conversation back on topic, I remember that incident very well.

3.6 fps was, by many, considered a massive humiliation of Western technology, even more so than their launch of the first cat into space:

Makes me think of homefront : revolution. In the game, the USA crumble and crash due to constant war and economic issues, massive poverty, famine, governement meltdown... Then north korea (which is quite rich and powerful in this alternate universe) take over the country, and reorganize it. They distribute food and rebuild infrastructure...

Obviously, the american fight them in a resistance, because the flags are all wrong (only one star I guess). And you met the resistance because you are from another cell. But they don't know that, so you are left to be tortured by a psycho who tortures random people without even asking questions. Eventually before she start cut you down (removing your nipple according to what she says), some dude found out who you are, so you're saved.
Eventually, you start working for the good guy resistance, who likes to torture random people (usually the asian looking ones), against the bad korean who bring jobs, security and food.

That game was so dystopic it hurts.
I think they tried to be serious however, which was creepy.

at this point in time we can just say technology. there was no Eastern option.

it would be decades before anyone tried creating a similar game to elite or alternative hardware to run it on.

plus cats in space was a huge success. the only part of the mission that failed was that they refused to come back by initiating reentry sequence ... which they must have discovered was not intended to land safely but just burn up. they instead jumped out and free falled the entire way and landed on their feet safely.

to this day we don't know where they are... but the nasa scientists involved in the mission were put in witness protection and lived in fear for the rest of their lives.
