Elite on Console is dead - so why are FDev delaying Odyssey improvements for it?

ED is no longer a PC game ported to consoles... no... this is a console game being ported to PC. Why do you think Odyssey was released to PC six months before consoles in such a disastrous state?

To meet investor deadlines. You seriously think console is the lead development platform?

Ditto for the UI. Sorry, that is not designed for console, if FDEV thinks otherwise they are in for a shock when the feedback from console players comes in.....if there are any left by then.

This is incorrect. There is absolutely no legal requirement for DLC to be available across generations. See e.g. Final Fantasy which has DLC only available on PS5.

This is a simple case of no inclination to invest in the platform.

Abandoned.

So you know what is in the Fdev - Sony contract... Wow! Amazing...

The point is they're delaying optimisation of the PC version to work on development for ancient consoles, with no plan for current generation consoles. Muddled.
Yep, they are. If they actually succeed that is a good thing for both PC and the people who own Elite on these "ancient" consoles.

They could have said let's not fix anything and put it straight onto the newer consoles. Just saying, that would be a very bad idea.

Ok. All I'm going to say is that Odyssey needs severe optimisation and improvements before it will run on the current consoles. Let's see if FD can actually do that first before before talking about the latest consoles. I think a lot of people have their doubts that it can be done.

You'll have to believe us PC players that you DO NOT want Odyssey on console in the state it is right now.
I am starting to think around November will announce that Odyssey is not coming to previous generation consoles. I cannot see the optimisation required being achievable in six months without significant compromises. So they will either throw the console players under the bus by abandoning them (not without precedent) or throw the PC players under the bus by downgrading the game further (not a slight on consoles but Odyssey is struggling with some decent rigs).

ED is either being drastically mismanaged by or this is the most effective, concerted effort to trash an IP in the history of gaming.

Frontier have just confirmed in the PlayStation forum - after a year of speculation - that they have no plans to bring Odyssey natively to the PS5 or XBox Series X/S. Essentially this means they're not willing to invest any effort in current-gen architecture for the game on console and are only targeting the 8-year old PS4 and Xbox One.

The game will run on the current-gen consoles, but only in backwards compatibility mode, meaning any improvements available are limited to an unlocked frame rate and improved SSD R/W times. For example, playing Elite or Odyssey on the PS5 will offer a maximum resolution of 1080p.

The lack of investment in current architecture sends a clear message that Frontier do not view the console market as a worthwhile investment, outside of any sales they might pick up via existing players on the 8-year old PS4 and Xbox.

Why then, do we think they are delaying improvements to the PC version of Odyssey for the console release, when the console version of the game has just had it's death-knell sounded?

RIP Elite on console. You were always the unloved step-child.
At least FD is treating everyone equally badly...

No, they did not confirmed that.

They only said that Odyssey is aimed/confirmed at/for XB1/PS4... that does not exclude PS5/XB Series

And there was no speculation except in your mind.
Their stance was and still is Currently there are no plans to...

To be more specific, that was what was actually posted...

Nonsense. The new menu systems require mouse and keyboard and aren't functional with just a controller. Try it for yourself.

The new UI is Windows 8 design language, nothing more. Obfuscation.

There may be some functionality issues right now, but as I believe, the PC release is currently live to give FDev time to work these things out for consoles. There is no possible way senior leadership did not know Odyssey was not in a full release state when they released it. Investor pressure or not, can anyone conclusively declare that there was no possible way for FDev to delay the release because of investor declarations? And yes, I strongly believe console is their future platform of choice. I believe FDev see the console market as a massive source of revenue,

Tile based design hasn't been a Windows feature since 2015, but is still currently a console design feature... every console out right now uses this as their primary UI design... so, how is this not tailored for the current design trend in consoles?

Oh no, if only we had known sooner!

To add my tuppence worth.

Grand Tourismo 7 and God of War sequel are coming out on last gen consoles, rather than being PS5 exclusives, much to the disappointment of many

So Frontier not focussing on the new consoles at this time is nothing to worry about.

If there is to be a graphics upgrade patch say for PS5, i would not expect it till the PS5 and new xbox are well established in two years time.
There are after all only about 8 million PS5s in the publics hands compared to a quoted 114 million PS4s
