Sorry Yamiks and all naysayers, but Odyssey is BETTER than Horizons

This had so much potential to become a counter-"State of the game" thread!
The Yin to the Yang, the Night to the Day, the Anaconda to the Beautiful, etc.

Such a shame that people are actually staying in topic! :(

OK, time to go back to interviewing space mushrooms with the Artemis hair dryer!

Actually, I agree with the OP.

Once you get a decent Frames per second, The game really does begin to open up. I've had fun (tm) with the missions and finding and logging plants is relaxing in an 'old man fishing' type of way. I'm doing more exploration and planetfall stuff than I ever did in Horizons.

They still need to ;-
  1. Fix the exploration mechanics so its easy to find geysers, guardian sites, thargoid sites, like we used to.
  2. Add some emotes, a way to sit down on chairs, buy drinks from the barman and a better chat room for players in the social spaces.
  3. Fix the zero g environments in outposts to make them feel zero g. Let there be floating rubbish or different zero G cups in the bar. ( I know this one sounds trivial but it really does help with immersion).
  4. Make it easier to spot bacteria lifeforms (I swear hald of them are invisible to the human eye).
  5. Add some extra mechanics with exploration mechanics. i.e. harvesting plants for Mats or Commodities.
  6. A couple of new SRV types or a new ship might be nice.
  7. Have the space game and foot game link up a little more. (i.e. For the 'go power up the base' mission, as you fly there in your ship, some Ner'do'wells try to stop you in their ships first).
But the performance has to fixed first.

Looking at you Update 5!
No Pressure!

Yeah, if you exclude the performances issue, AND the bug, AND the problems, then yeah, it's decent.

Thank you for this insight.

OP, while I agree with your sentiment that Odyssey is an improvement over Horizons, and that Yamik's is being too much of a crank, they have not fixed all the bugs yet. Their (mini) roadmap says as much. They have a lot of performance issues to fix and address, graphical glitches, the new planetary tech, and UI issues just to name a few. The new "foundation" of Odyssey would be a good one, and clearly better than Horizons, if it were finished. It isn't. We're in the undeclared Beta phase, which is why for some of us the game is fairly reliable to play (as opposed to the early Alpha) yet a lot of people are still having major/game breaking issues.

As for Yamiks... ugh... sometimes his criticisms are spot on and other times I think he has spent so much time being a bitter cynic that he has lost all perspective. His video short on the "terrible waste of time" one has to spend to unlock Domino Green via the Apex shuttle rides was laughable. He makes it out like the whole thing will take you an hour or more. It took me 10 minutes. I was prepared for it to take a long time, due to his video, and had a mobile game ready to play while the Apex shuttle did it's thing. I hardly got to play before it was over.

And oh... dear... god.... I am so sick of his "Armstrong Moment" bits. Yes, Fdev mislead us and us teleporting to the surface is a let down. But it's been two months now... GET OVER IT (especially when there are still legitimate issues you could be griping about).

Dear poster, which I respect, I want to say I disagree with that part of your otherwise quality post.
I find his use of the "armstrong moment" relatively funny and I enjoy it.

I do hope I'm not too much off topic for answering this specific poster.

Now that bugs have been fixed, and even if everything is not perfect yet, I can say it with some confidence. Some stuff dosen't work, yep, SRV still lags, yep, but IU is actually better once that you've figured it out, the game has more to offer, and perf-wise, well, it will get better (it already had) but if you haven't upgraded you PC since Horizons in 2015 and you expect to play Odyssey 60FPS in 2021, I mean, wake up...
Game play grind and umimginative game design is still there. I knew something like this would happen. "OH! The bugs (that shouldn't have been there in the first place) have been fixed! Game is perfect and done". Yeah, NO!

Also performance is still choppy and the planet tech is still sloppy.

Nice try.

In regards to Yamiks, I believe Fdev gave him a reason to be so crusty to Odyssey.
He has over one hundred thousand subscribers even more than D2E and Fdev wouldn’t give him a evaluation copy of Odyssey, that he took as a insult to his work and channel.
With all due respect, and please don't take my slight disagreement for any kind of attack.
Yes but he didn't provide "constructive criticism" (according to Fdev). And by that, I mean he was negative. And by that I mean, it was not good press.

Still, it was great, because thanks to the proper "constructive criticism" from the CC who were selected to be rewarded by Fdev, we had a bug free experience in Odyssey. As the OP generously pointed out.

Sooo...

"Some of our players are reporting poor performance on machines where we would expect the performance to be good, and others are saying it is fine. We are trying to get to the bottom of this. I have been playing on my old home machine from 2014, which has an Intel i7 Extreme CPU and a GTX 980 GPU, 16 Gb RAM, playing at 1080p full screen at Ultra. I was doing this so I could have a good feel for how the game was playing on older hardware, and I used this same machine during Alpha. I have also been playing on a high spec 2021 dev machine."

This may be news to you, but it's not 2014 any more ....

Is that directed towards me or David Braben?

Do you think Scotland just had a referendum about independence and decided to stay? Then you might think it's 2014. It happens - old people get confused 🤷‍♀️ HTH
Forgive me. I've been sick for a few days and it's, obviously, affected my cognitive abilities. I'm having a difficult time picking up what you've laid down. Are you saying David Braben is "confused" due to old age? I mean... He's only 57.
