Development Update 1 - June

No, it says this:

So what do you think that means? Weeks after release?

"we will keep you updated" - yeah, heard that before for Powerplay, Multi-crew etc etc.

Never heard that about Powerplay. Multicrew was, "if people use it more we might develop it more".
Would suggest neither are as core to ED's IP as planet tech though (which I happen to think is a big improvement already)

Not bad start (OP) but the truth is that I expected little more info about future plans outside of bugs fixing :). I do not want evaluate new format of devs news yet, will wait for tomorrow patch list and at least 2 next devs posts. My biggest personal interest is about info whether there are at least some basic plans about better connection between "on foot" and "in ship" play, because in many cases it is felt (to me) like a two independent "worlds" with rare joint points.

"....we simply wouldn’t ever have enough time to add all the awesome things that are requested by the community."

We don't really want to add anything else, we need to get fixes for everything that is wrong, not working as intended, or the things that are really a poor choice compared to Horizon. For example the horrible universe map and ship outfiting ui, or the poor terrain planets that are like dirty spheres.

Fixing that and the others things that are wrong will be great, no need to add new things.

Thanks for the update. Something that could be a very fast fix, would be the unreal amount of things needed to upgrade everything in Odyssey. Veterans have already gone through this once when Engineering was first released. It was so awful. And then it was changed, because even you guys admitted it was absurd. But then you release Odyssey and here we are all over again. Every single thing, for every single upgrade, should be 25% of what it currently is.

Compounding on that statement, I really hope loot spawning 6m under ground in an already tediously horrendous grind will be fixed tomorrow. It's bad enough for things to cost so much, but then add rarity of 'threat 3' POI's and then add the fact that they have unobtainable loot because a hatch of a vehicle is buried or the loot is just 6m underground is very awful.

Lastly, we paid hard earned money for this update and waited something like 3 years without any content at all besides Fleet Carriers. It has now been years with so many special modules released for CG's and AX and other stuff. It's time to spend the money on more servers, call it "Planet Servers Evolution" if that helps, and give us more than 120 storage. We deserve at least that much, I'd think.

It's all great!

BUT

That's not enough ... At this rate, the covid will have disappeared from the planet before reaching a suitable result ...

Back to the topic. Again, i expected more, and i'll try to be reasonable about it.
I got on the "hope train" again, since i can't do much on 20fps, this is not the post i thought of, and indeed this shouldn't be a livestream cause it would last like 3 minutes under a script, its a shame, sadly.

The only stuff i've seen for real is:

  • Things you fixed, which we already knew (and some of them were only PARTIALLY fixed)
  • Top 5 concerns, with performance being at the bottom (but that's on the issue tracker i reckon), which we already knew, but it is GOOD to at least read that the team is actively working on this area, the past 4 updates did nothing to improve my performance (and few other commanders) at all
  • A "sneak peak" one day earlier from an update we've been waiting for 2 weeks, "as previously stated"(also know as "we already knew")
  • Releasing odyssey so bugged got you so busy that even next steps might take longer than you expected, which i thought it would happen.

But what is really sad is: there were 2 selling points for odyssey, new planet tech and space legs:
my space legs are on the 20 to 5 fps mark, no "solid" plans on changing them on the near future for now (and the gameplay/loops added is somewhat poor as of now)
and the new planet tech, the way is stated on post, sounds like "We don't have a workable solution for now but we will keep looking at it"

so, at least for me, both selling points are not working properly and won't for a little while, which is a bummer, i was eager to enjoy elite, but even horizons took a hit after odyssey, so im not into playing that much since odyssey released, unfortunatelly.

I wish i could believe the "we will look at it" but there's way too many examples(hello powerplay, hello multicrew) of why this would be something wrong on my part to do, so i'll do as some others and "hope for the best", the best being the game at least being playable again for me.

we will be able to share and keep you informed every step of the way.
and again, i don't mean to be rude on anyone, but if the next posts are as "detailed" as this one, i doubt i'll feel "informed", unless this is indeed the ammount of info to share with us that FDev thinks it's plausible.

I appreciate FDev trying to communicate better and all, but there's a looooooong way between this and proper useful communication.

To be clear, none of this text is towards Arthur, CMS, or individuals at FDev, CM's are doing a good job as they can, devs did what they were said to do, but there's the "company" behind giving orders, the critique(when there's criticism) goes on the company, never individuals.

The scale of ED is in the galaxy, which I ferverently hope is not being done in the engine and is being done on a database somewhere and a routine exists in the engine to pass in a system ID and get all info for that single system.

Yes, yes, it is so easy. The hard part is the graphics. ED is amazing graphically (leaving aside the odyssey UI and visual overhaul). The ships and system representation are very very good!

To break it down the engine handles the drawing of the scene, the movement of you and others within it, atmosperics, NPCs. BGS, Missions, Trading are all done outside the engine. All this is plain to see in 'other games' drawing systems etc etc

Why is no one doing it on ED's scale? Why would they? It's all been done before. Fdevs 2 main competitors are doing it, one with only one system but with more depth of gameplay, and the other with a tiny developmenty team is doing everything ED does and a whole lot more, excepy for the BGS, making fdev look like a joke. And let's be honest here, the BGS have never worked right.

And futher to those 2, many others are using U5 and Unity to build space games.

About two years ago I had a go at this just to see how it all went together in Unity. I downloaded the CSVs and within a day had them offloaded into an MSSQL DB. 2 further days had me jumping from system to system and placing 'planets' where they should be. The entire exercise showed me that I am useless at graphics, leaving aside the BGS, the rest is donkey work, ED lives off it's graphics.
Nicely sidestepped...
Again, if it is so easy, and the perceived value is literally $100's of millions to a studio releasing something that 'completely works' there is a shortage of volunteers...

But, of course, it is easier to berate Frontier than do the job oneself, isn't it?
