Apex shuttles - A thing that I did not know

Was I deceived, or can it be done? I certainly did not think it was possible.

I watched an videos on youtube last night. The CMDR was looting on foot, without a ship or SRV. When his backpack was full, he appeared to call for a shuttle and off loaded his goodies and then went back to looting whilst the shuttle departed. Was I mistaken, or did I miss the bit where he called his own ship?

This really works. The Apex shuttles not only transport all of your own loadouts but also have a interdimensional connection to your own material inventory.
So you can call a cab, transfer all the goods that you found in a settlement and just let the 5 minute timer run out. It will cost you only 100c if you booked a local tranportation service.

It doesn't cost you anything, if you don't fly, they will refund your fee.
I use this commonly.

Which gets refunded when you don't fly.

Real pros just recall the apex as soon as it drops you off and try to finish the mission before it leaves :)
Unfortunately the cab drivers are not trained in combat flights. So instead of leaving a hostile settlement close to the sward at very high speed, they make a slow climb in close range to the defence systems, earning them a Darwin Award.
Not that much of a fun, if your are on the passenger seat....

In a future patch they might introduce a new Apex Premium service, where the taxi is more resilient and not likely to be destroyed by the settlement's defenses.
Something like a Cutter with Prismatics, I reckon.
It will come at a higher price however: 1,000 CR, refundable

If you're aggroing the base then you're not a pro ;) Don't worry, you'll get there. Well, assuming fdev fix Apex as they seem to have broken in mostly in Patch 5 ...

It’s always been there since Alpha…. Ohh wait … it is still alpha

Ha! I had no idea this was a thing.

Now if FD were smart about this what they’d do is keep this working as is, but make it so you can only transfer stuff to the shuttle if its destination is somewhere you have a presence, which at the moment basically means somewhere you have a ship docked. At least there’d be a sort of logic there, and an additional game wrinkle that fits in with the broadest interpretation of the lore. You’d basically be using Apex as FedEx, ferrying stuff back to “your place” for safe keeping.

If and when we ever get player-owned storage, it could be tweaked to fit in with that too.

Sadly, what’s more likely is that it won’t be touched at all, or it will be nerfed away completely and another nuance of gameplay will be lost.
