Advice please... Thanks in advance

I have a PC ... components as listed below in my sig... built specifically for Elite Dangerous about 18 months ago at the cost of approx £2500. I later managed to secure a Gigabyte RTX 3080Ti Reference card (All my components are Gigabyte's best on offer at the time) but there was no perceptible improvement in Odyssey's 'problems' I was experiencing along with many other commanders. In temper I removed the RTX3080Ti and later sold it having refitted my RTX2080 Retail card....again with no perceptible deterioration OR improvement to Odyssey.

I'm now thinking of again doing a complete, top-to-bottom, new build, specifically to optimize Odyssey, I would like to stick with both Gigabyte as a manufacturer and NVIDIA as a brand of GPU; I have about £3000 to spend.... (but not really being a tech 'wizard' would strongly welcome some technical/spec's advice and/or spec's recommendations.) o7

I would wait until they finished the game first before building a PC around it.
I'd advice you to wait for the console release instead of trying to find the optimal system for an unoptimized game.
I tend to find 'waiting' or inaction very difficult..... not sure if that is being 'proactive'...or just stupid in this case.... I guess you are both right...ho hum. thx o7

As much as I recognize and empathize with the urge, and as much as I abhor being even slightly reasonable, I think you should keep your finger off the bang switch too.

You'd just risk ending up with a second very expensive rig with nothing to show for it, because I'm fairly certain that the issues some people are having have very little, if anything, to do with their hardware.

Better to spend the money on something sensible. Like beer.

Software Rule #1 : Don't try to "fix" broken and/or unfinished Software still in Development by tossing expensive Hardware at it!

You can reconsider and make a sensible decision at the time of Console Release, when Odyssey 1.0.000 is published.
(actually I'd wait 1 or 2 patches after that to make a call)

PS.
You can't "optimize Odyssey" - only FDev can and they have just started this long process.

I agree with what's been said, stop spending money on something you can't do anything about.

I would put your rig into the state that made you the happiest and leave it at that.

the problem is not the computer (in fact some higher end machines seem to suffer MORE from frame rate issues) it is because it keeps trying to render literally everything and eats whatever system you use.... horribly unoptimised... hopefully this will change soon, so do not go tearing through an expensive machine looking for problems your end!

You were a bit vague about your specific problems with Odyssey. And don't tell me "just what everyone else says" because everyone's experience is different. I have an RTX 3070 and the game is very playable for me. All on Ultra but only with a 60 Hz monitor. Not sure if it matters but do you possibly expect the game to run smoothly in 4k? So far I've seen a lot of the more complex buildings but haven't done any of the crowded actions like CZs. The latter seem to cause a lot of problems from what I've picked up, so I can't judge. But otherwise the game almost always runs at a constant 60 FPS (vsync on) for me.

The reason I tell you this is that with an RTX 3080Ti you should have at least the same, if not better experience. You might want to look for the bottleneck on your system first. Btw, how much system and GPU memory do you have? In case Odyssey supports multi-core(?), how many cores does your CPU have? I'm not a tech guru either and I don't think I can be of much help. 🤷‍♂️
Hi Commander
To answer some of your questions: I had been getting 85 fps capped in settings to prevent unnecessary work for the GPU (I have reverted back to a RTX2080 ....sold the 3080 for a good profit as really miffed it made zero difference to Odyssey)... was getting as low as 10-15 fps in concourses but usually sub 30 fps. The main grumble I've got is the nausea inducing 'rubber-banding' stutters, again in concourses. Update 5 really kicked Odyssey until D2EA's 'fix' came along.
Performance elsewhere other than the concourses is acceptable but not the blisteringly fast and smooth performance throughout (the old) Horizons. The only caveat to that comment is the momentary 'hitches' approaching stations (and planets) coupled with total loss of all input controls that usually lasts for 1-2 seconds. The LOD pop-in's on planets are also a visual pain. With Horizons I never had a crash but now suffer occasional crashes to desktop, often with the FDev crash reporting pop-up in attendance.

In addition I have the same comments as others regarding ink stamped planetary features and unrealistic silky smooth planet surfaces, the jag and detail free height-mapped mountains, invisible rocks etc. etc. Can't blame my PC for any of that malarkey!

I have 8Gb memory on the graphics card and 30 Gb fast system memory. I don't know about cores but I've got an Intel i7 9700 K not overclocked. So for me, until recently (D2EA's 'fix' has helped improve things to a certain degree but meant curtailing more graphics settings) Odyssey has been pretty disappointing having to stay away from any of the concourses which do form a major part of the new iteration.

Finally all I will say is that I am NOT a technical guru so really don't know about bottlenecks etc. I just know that on the same machine Cyberpunk 2077 on ultra settings runs like a dream whereas Odyssey even with culled settings runs like a crippled pig! o7

(How did you even manage to buy a 3080ti?)
An industry insider tech guy (actually a bona fide professor) is a good friend, who is now not very happy I sold something he obtained for me for what was a reasonable outlay.... I have now gone 50% on the rather good profit but he's still not very pleased with me! (It was a Gigabyte Reference card whatever that means*) o7

edit:
*supposedly important 🤷‍♂️
