State of the Game

primarily walking around seldom does for someone looking to play a space game
That's not true. I'm not big on NMS, but there is TON of content. And all of it is free.
Base building, freighters building, exploration, quests, multiplayer stuff....

Some is on the ground, some in space, some in interior.

Hello lovely/crazy peeps! Away for a while, you have been busy... 😎
Far too much to catch up on, though obviously I'm concerned that not reading the previous 100 pages may deprive me of the secret of eternal life/wealth/understanding of the universe/my sanity...

On the subject of alternative games, heartily suggest Observer to anyone who hasn't played it - @Amy Pendergast suggestion and it is spooky as hell but at the same time nicely slow paced (which is something I do love about Elite). It's also visually fabulous and updated to make use of ray tracing if you have the hardware...

Looked at NMS but thought meh... though I hear all the new updates are pretty good

Raises eyebrow and the refutation of NMS as primarily a walk-around game.

Yeah - now you can ride your own hullaballoo, there are 4 types of ground vehicle, one of which is a submarine... oh yeah - and a ship and a freighter - which you use to get to other planets so that walk around and grind for more mats in order to make the next space flight possible.

Come to think about it - NMS you spend a lot of time looking at the sky...

Erei, you're talking dogs testicles! Darth is right, it's mostly on the ground! And I have played a lot of it!

what would turn elite around for me:

1. Add gameplay layer above grind for mining. Existing stuff stays as-is for the most part. prospector limpets however will have a separate mode if you choose to use it to manually control the limpet's travel to the roid (flips to limpet view like a SLF). With very limited fuel, and a pulse scanner type view, you can boost the yield for certain elements the roid has by landing the prospector on the right spot. Potentially doubling the amount of bits you can laser off, or if cracking the core - potentially doubling the result.

see fdev. That's how you add some skill to a mechanic without falling back on a mini-game.

2. Give me a damn Dredger.

3. lots of other suff... but the above 2 would be applicable meow.
