Or the player base dwindle down to such low numbers, that Fdev will just pull the plug. Why keep the lights on for a few hundred players?I find it funny that you suggest that in 6 months no-one (it is hyphenated, by the way) will be playing ED. (no-one being an inclusive, as you are aware, I'm sure)
MalForTheWin, Neotantrix, Psyche, Bognogus (he dropped in for the hype, promptly left after Odd. release), are the ones that stand out.
Well streaming is about views in the end, if ED:O does not drive that then its only natural I suppose.
I cant readWell, let's have a look at this...
I don't really watch Mal or Neo, but as Psyche and Bog are products of before the content drought and toilet paper wars of 2020, I think I can weigh in.
Why have these streamers stopped? Well, for Psyche, she started with Elite and moved into variety a while after getting partnership. Suffice to say, Elite's content was exhausted for her, and playing a game that you really don't want to play leads to burnout. So, with a solid viewerbase and partnership to show to sponsors / companies, she was able to move into other games pretty well. This keeps the field fresh for her. Plus, if you move into another category and keep 50%+ of your viewerbase then you're off to a solid start. Cult of personality and all that.
Boggy moved for pretty much the same reason - Elite had little to offer him after a while, but he found great success with Star Citizen. Now, if you're concerned about his short return, consider the title of his last Elite stream: "Update 5..is Odyssey saved? What's the replayability?" The key here is that Odyssey is implied to require saving and has replayability issues. Remember what we said about streaming a game that has nothing to offer you? It's death to your stream. No-one wants to watch people not enjoying a game.
Frontier can spend all the money they want on press kits (bowls of plants) with Arthur grinding his teeth over plant passports and Dahlia emailing keys like a woman posessed to raise awareness of a product, but if the game is unable to sustain higher numbers after the initial increase or keep the content creators they made famous then it's a reflection of the product more than anything else. Remember - streaming on a single PC (not a dual setup, mind) is a huge strain on the machine. Odyssey's poor performance is not conducive to this method.
FDEV do keep track of twitch numbers versus competing products (Will told me this back in the day) so it is one metric they keep an eye on. FDEV likes to bide its time and steeple its fingers like a villain waiting for a hero to enter their trap, but they don't actively engage in a cycle of feedback with the wider community. They consume feedback and produce based upon it in a linear fashion rather than actively using a cycle. There are many flavours of content creator, but FDEV like to stick to the ones that they know will be gentle with them. As an example, I've heard a few interviews with the CM team on streams, etc... under this new and improved umbrella of transparency, but I have yet to hear (and please, someone gimme a link if this has happened) anyone ask the hard questions. It's all "what are you doing to fix this?" and "what is that all about?" instead of "WHY has this happened?"
That's why Lave Radio, Psykit, etc... have been able to stick around - they've got Frontier's ear and have built /maintained relationships within the current CM team. For Bog and Psyche, the CMs they built relationships with have moved to other positions or companies so the relationship is no longer with people, it's with a business.
I take questions on this subject at twitch.tv/thehoneythief because I am a shameless narcissist.
Big love.
I get that bit, who would want to try to please a Yamiks, right? There are many flavours of content creator, but FDEV like to stick to the ones that they know will be gentle with them.
The reaction of the content creators reflects the reaction of the majority of the community. A sense of being effectively scammed if you pre-ordered to begin with, being sold an unfinished product, a sense of resigned disappointment at the questionable 'upgrade' (it's at best a mixed bad) of the planet tech and the very little actual game play content that was added and of frustration at the doubling down on grind and the indifference that FDev has largely treated the community with it's communication policy.I get that bit, who would want to try to please a Yamiks, right?
But even the ones who have been gentle with them seem to be losing faith.
Look at ObsidianAnt, or D2EA. Two of their loyal streamers, even they have not fully moved on, just toned down the frequency on ED.
EliteWeek has said it in one of their last streams too: "I'm done protecting Fdev, I couldn't give a something about this anymore".
Total horse apples. The reaction of the content creators reflects the reaction of the majority of the community. Moving forward it really comes down to what FDev does. They could turn it around, like they have in the past, but the landscape has changed. While I don't believe that either SC or NMS are direct competition, they are close and both will sap at ED's player base, until ED is no longer commercially viable. My feeling is that FDev isn't really geared towards dealing this the problem as it too has changed over time, ED is no longer its core business, publishing multiple games is. Personally, I think they would be better off spinning it off from the main company, retaining majority ownership, but bringing in a separate investor and team to focus on it.
I'm saying that the grind that used to be in old school mmo is non-existent in EDSo it's bad then but it's less bad in ED but still terrible, and you are advocating it stays that way?
That's fair enough. I have no evidence to suggest it is the majority.Total horse apples.
Majority of the community my Asp.
Some != a tiny minority. Some is more than none and less than all. Some in my view is the grade below lots. Lots is smaller than most. That's fair enough. I have no evidence to suggest it is the majority.
But to suggest that a significant percentage of the community does not feel scammed, or otherwise let down, would be a serious level of denial. You may be playing hours per day, but a lot of people are not. Many are still encountering bugs, some new, that make playing EDO unplayable. For example, as of the last patch, I've found that I can no longer navigate through the tabs in the messages, in VR, which essentially means playing with EDO is a non-starter.
And trying to dismiss this as SOME people, as if it is some tiny minority clearly doesn't match up with reality. The reviews would not be so overwhelming bad if it was only a tiny minority. I doubt the content creators would be seemingly jumping ship so blatantly if it was only a tiny minority. And while it's Summer and still early days, I doubt there would be such a drop in players if it was only a tiny minority.
But if you want to believe that like some cult member, then feel free, but then I suggest I would not be the buffoon here and avoid insulting other posters - people in glass houses, and all that.
From the number of likes (49, an unusually high number) this seems to be a very common perception! To be fair watching ED stream is as entertaining as watching paint dry.
Then if it is not few your dismissal of those people does not exactly help your analysis. Your argument appears to be little more than "anecdotally, I'm all right Jack, therefore everyone else who disagrees with me is clearly a Daily Mail reader brainwashed by the content creators", despite the backlash against the EDO release existing before the content creators began to turn their backs on it. Stamping your foot and demanding that everyone else is wrong isn't going to help the game. Some != a tiny minority. Some is more than none and less than all. Some in my view is the grade below lots. If I had meant a tiny number I would have used the word few.
I am happy referring to daily mail readers as buffoons in public. I am also happy referring to people who believe everything they see on streamers' broadcasts verbatim as buffoons.
Nothing was directed at you, nor other posters.
Regarding the cult thing. Yup. I'm on a mission from dog. #forthemug
Ps you're supposed to spell it with an N
I do find it vaguely funny though streamers dump ED and its wonky update...and play another broken game that essentially does the same things. Then if it is not few your dismissal of those people does not exactly help your analysis. Cheers!I'm with Vingtetun.
There are a persistent minority of haters on the forums, some who have not played the game for a long time, who just play the forum game and not Elite.
The youtubers seem to attract the haters, if you read the comments on the video its all negative. Anyone who writes anything positive gets shot down. That rude person Elite Week was the worst. The tone and the content makes them unwatchable. Who wants to be fed that level of negativity unless your a masochist.
There are bugs in ED, some of which should have been sorted before full release. But the game is playable, i've been playing it, its been stable on my now getting old rig.
