ED from old PC to new

Firstly, apologies if this has been done to death but I'm posting this from my phone and searching is a pain. My current PC is in dry dock with a blown power plant and the possibility of other dead modules too.

In the event that the PC can be repaired, I need to back up ED. That's not a problem.

What I need to understand is how to get ED running on a new PC.

  • can I just copy the game from the old PC to the new one?
  • do I just need to re-download from the store?
  • if so, will just EDO work or do I need to re-download Horizons first, then EDO?

Thanks!

OK, so you can't really copy your existing ED folder over that contains all the game's files to save on download times.

On my current machine, I have the game on my D: drive. What if I physically removed that drive and mounted in a new PC? How would that work?

I’d do a fresh install myself, while preserving the stuff I mentioned. Then you know everything is installed correctly.

Do you need to copy that entire directory as there seems to be quite a lot of stuff there, the visited star cache seems to be in numbered folders can they be copied individually or will pointers to them be lost?

This might help as well:

You'd think that somebody at Frontier would have foreseen Players migrating to another, especially a beefier machine.
In order to facilitate that, I would have written a Migration Utility which would have saved all relevant data, bindings saves and journals to an external USB Drive. The requisite Import Utility would plonk the aforementioned Data Packs in the right places.

The only missing piece in the puzzle is what ED actually "sees" reads as the Name/Address of Attached Devices. This would make editing existing binds a whole lot easier rather than recreating everything from scratch when you've kept peripherals the same.

Just a thought.
