State of the Game

We just go to New York, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas and claim we’ve seen everything.

hah. you'd have to be a native or have a native helping you to really experience a big city. otherwise you're just gonna experience the commonality of things all big cities across the world have. except the language.

proper tourism here is gonna require lots of travelling.

and a plan ahead of time.

And if you want to do it in one trip.. probably a month unless you enjoy spending most of your trip in planes. Maybe a couple weeks on the west coast, week or so on the south, and a couple weeks on the north east coast.

there is no reason to really visit the mid west. Unless you want to visit the physical analogue to elite dangerous gameplay.

i dont know how tourists like to visit the US. do you usually go for a cross-country tour? visit landmarks? just goto a given city?

it's not like we have ancient stuff to really visit. And most things are so far apart, you really can't wing it.
The 3 times I've visited the US:

1) at the age of 15 with my father, to Orlando, Florida (Guess wherer we went!)
2) To Bethlehem, Pennsylvania with my daughter and her mother to see her mothers side of the family)
3) New York for a long weekend that a co-worker won as a prize at work, so we both went for a lads weekend away (And wound up in Coyote Ugly down in Greenwich Village)

So all visits were to a specific place, for a specific thing... would love to take a few months off work though and do a road trip all over!

Never went as a tourist, but had a few conferences in California where I went out to visit the surroundings a bit. It's not as much beelining the attractions lined up in a guide as it is getting as much of a feel of the place as one can while just passing through. It's the sights, the food, the general life. Pretty much like I do in any non-US city I end up in for a few days.

As a European, the main issue is the scale really. Everything is so far apart... Even in a relatively modest city like San Diego, places like the Old Town, Downtown or the beaches on Coronado island are desperately far from each other that walking is pretty much a non-option. San Diego was sort of ok with the tram, but LA was a pain to move around with the subway and stations so far apart. Pasadena/Santa Monica felt a bit more human-scaled.

As for the places of interest, well, to me there's always the Americana (old West leftovers/reconstructions like the old town in San Diego, Hollywood Boulevard, I-wish-the-Pam-of-my-teenage-years-was-there Malibu beach, your civil war stuff...) and the landscapes (La Jolla in San Diego has a lovely coastline - I like coastlines - and well, you have some spectacular sights like the Grand Canyon). The planet has the same age in the US as everywhere else, a scenic spot is a scenic spot no matter the flag on it. And then there's the local take on your hobbies/interests, as in visiting the local sports club or microbrewery. It's always neat to meet up another crowd to see their take on your thing.

Is it just me? when in fullscreen whenever I open the system map when the animation starts I get a 1 inch vertical view of my desktop icons shows through?

I dont know if i'd goto some place for buffalo wings.

they're buffalo wings. You either want them breaded and fried, or baked ... but either way, they're covered in buffalo sauce .

You'd have to be really bad to mess it up... and there is no "best" There's just buffalo wings and someone who doesn't know how to cook chicken.

just order 50 or 100 and bring them back home for the party.

You, sir, are a philistine.

Next thing you'll be telling me all coffee tastes the same, so just buy it from McDonalds.
