Elite Dangerous Odyssey: Server Update

I thought that might be the case, but there are two issues:
  • these were pretty much the only on foot missions that don't involve either combat or breaking the law, apart from very basic fetch quests which are on about the same level as killing rats in some old lady's basement. For those of us who don't want to play as gung-ho criminals removing them is quite limiting on what's left to do.
  • they're now too hard to find. Unless you happen to come across one by chance, you'd have to know of an offline settlement and find a mission board for the faction that owns it - and there's no good way to find offline settlements (I did suggest back in the Alpha that offline status should at least be shown in the system map). Flying over each one to see if the lights are on is not a serious prospect.
Also, what's wrong with a faction hiring someone to do something at another faction's base? Plenty of ships missions involve a faction hiring you to interact with another faction, for instance delivering them some cargo. I don't really see a problem, although obviously you'd want to make sure the two aren't at war or something.
May I add that they offered various rewards for the same mission so it was very convenient to find the one you preferred. Please let the rest of the factions be good samaritans and offer rewards for fixing their neighbours' settlements.

Will you fix the 'mono' stereoscopic issue on some rocks on every planet ?
Rocks visible in one eye, shadow in the other .. and not always the same side.
Very trippy, but I don't think that's the way it should be ?

They could just increase the number of salvage and espionage missions to abandoned settlements. At least that gives players the opportunity to do some more or less legitimate scavenging while they're there.

The problem here is, what if the faction has no settlements that are offline?

It then can't offer any of that mission type, because it doesn't need doing.
Well, in that case you might have to go and find another faction to help out. There's lots!

I can't understand people that buy a game about space travel and insist on not travelling anywhere.

First, I love that Frontier is keeping in mind that having infinite missions towards one settlement would create locations like Ceos/Sothis where only having one type of mission and valid location basically meant the entire mission board would be copies of it.

Having only one mission targeting each settlement, however, might be too restrictive to non-combat mission pools and ending up with no missions at all. So there are two things that could be looked into:
  • Increasing the max range for missions. Players easily rock 30 ly jump ranges nowadays, and that can go upwards to 50+. Apex also allows for 100 ly taxis. The number of jumps is really a very insignificant part of the time spent in missions.
  • More than 1 mission per settlement for mission types that make sense. Collections, for example, could be more interesting if you had 2 or 3 per settlement.
  • Government and/or superpower alignment-type collaboration so it's not only same-faction missions (at least in the case there are no eligible destinations for same-faction). So a federal corporation would be willing to help another federal corporation, empire patronages, independent communists, etc.

I've been travelling around since Thursday's patch and found exactly one mission in all that time, and that one was because another commander told me more or less where to go. "Go and find another one" doesn't help when they're suddenly that scarce.

Have they increased the chance of finding Power reculators inside secure lockers in the Power control center? I have found several degraded power regulators there. Or is there any plan with the degraded ones, convert them to regular? Or be able to trade them for regular?

Commanders, I know I talk a lot but I don't want you to think I'm just throwing the towel in here - but my day is about to end (I've got a final meeting of the day and then I really need to feed my tummy and sleep...TMI?)

Thank you so much for the feedback and conversation AGAIN today. I've taken lots of notes from this thread which will definitely prove really useful with my further adventures dev side for you. I may even pester a few of you further if I need a teeny bit more clarity :)

Have a super evening/day everyone o7 See you very soon, obviously.

Thats for the updates through the day,

take it another therapy session from having to deal with the forums :p

What would be good is having the system map or left panel outright indicate if a settlement is offline, so you know immediately whether or not there's likely to be restore missions in the area. Same as how the map points a big honkin' arrow at planets that have surface CZs.

Better tools for finding stuff are always good.

Hmm, there are a few, but still WAAAAY more scavenger kill missions - pretty sure you used to be offered both and they would filter out when you took a mission at a base

Greetings Commanders.

Today at approximately 14:30 UTC/ 15:30 BST we will be restarting the Odyssey servers to apply some server-side fixes. Downtime is not expected to be any longer than a few minutes.
This downtime will not affect Horizons servers.
  • Restoration missions will no longer be incompletable when putting out fires.
  • Missions to steal data from settlements will now display objectives on your HUD and the data will be available as intended.
  • Salvage missions now display objectives on your HUD and items can now be found at salvage sites.
  • Missions to take out settlement occupants will now register progress correctly.
  • Fixed an issue caused by older missions conflicting with the latest update (this would have resulted in missing HUD objectives and being unable to progress once reaching the mission location).
  • Fixed a crash caused by missions that would send you to non-settlement locations (this may take up to 12 hours to roll out).
  • Commodities that are temporarily illegal because of an active Faction State can now be sold to stations that need them for repairs.
  • Fixed an issue with Players rarely not being able to load into Horizons after playing Odyssey.
  • Rebalanced the faction influence effects from repeatedly winning & losing various scenarios at Installations & Megaships.
  • Adjusted Mercenary rank progression speed for Odyssey on foot players (it was noted by many as being too slow to progress prior to this update)
I'll be around as usual to make sure things settle in comfortably with this update, so let me know here if you experience any turbulence.

See you in the black o7
may brebus bless you:)

Hey Sally , don't get burnt out - look after you!
You're doing an amazing job, along with the other CMs and dev teams.

Ngobe System, Hinz Hub, just now: zero restore missions.
Also, no support missions out of Eratosthenes Ring, but that's one data point.

Factions on both of those systems are not in States which shutdown their settlements.
Checking the factions for both systems, only Ngobe Jet Comms Exchange is on Civil Unrest in Hyades Sector HR-W d1-59.
But, according to Inara, it has no settlements (I did not check in game).
So, in both cases, according to the new rule that only the owner should generate restore missions, it makes sense.

To increase the chances of finding support/restore/reactivation missions, I highly recommend going to a system where factions are in a negative state (Civil Unrest, Bust, Lockdown, Natural Disaster, Outbreak, etc).

Minor Factions on Civil Unrest near Ngobe.
Minor Factions on Civil Unrest near Azaladshu.

BTW, you don't have to use Inara to see these. They're available using the filters in the Galaxy Map. I just find it more convenient.
EDIT: Civil Unrest has settlements Powered Down + On Fire. Lockdown for instance is just Powered Down. Not 100% sure about the other states.
