The Not so Engoodening of Elite Dangerous Odyssey Review - How I Fell Out of Love

But BlackMaze does make a point. After a rather bug-ridden weekend, I have been leaning towards having a look at Star Citizen - if I'm going to play a buggy mess, it might as well be a pretty buggy mess!
I have to admit, while that (well put together btw) video of @BlackMaze had me consider for a few seconds whether I should give SC a go, I just can't square it with my conscience giving Roberts any of my money until the game is ready. And I can certainly see the appeal of buying more, better ships given how detailed they are. A potential proper money pit alright, knowing myself.

The starter ship looks proper pants as well (design wise I mean, and functionally probably also) which I suppose is by design in order to get your wallet out (no idea how easy/quick it is to obtain the more interesting ships with credits in-game).

So while it's becoming very tempting indeed, I think I'll stick to X4 instead. Maybe not as sexy, but feature complete at least. I'll be watching this space (hur dur) though....

I’ve not given any money yet, but it always intrigues me whenever I look, and it’s starting to come together now. - May even make it to release this decade.

The idea of paying up to $1300 for a ship and access, pay for credits etc does bother me though.

While I have little time for Hawkes Gaming, their unsubstantiated claims about Smear Campaigns or their constant self-aggrandizing, so I CBA to watch the video.

It was relatively interesting from the CC side. Also D2EA commented and shared a piece of opinion.
Essentially, making guides for Odyssey is not worth it. Hawkes say people only care about "bashing" the DLC, and he don't want to do that.

Me to, I'll be honest. I have an account (kickstarter) but never played.

The OA video about the planet was mind blowing. Actual city ? Weather ? Grass ?

Resume: Go and play SC or NMS. Sad...
I hope someone from FDEV that REALLY can change things see the video and... change things.
:(
ohh... I feel myself same as Hawkes since the release of Odyssey. Disappointed, deceived and angry sometimes.

But looks like nobody from FDev will do anything about this. IMO this is not the lack of ideas in FDev team, it just looks like cobra engine is not designed to make those ideas real, and the developer team unfortunately has lack of experience with developing that engine to the next level. From my point of view there's definitely something wrong with a dev team (I'm not talking only about developers, but managers, game designers, artists etc.) that prevents this game from evolution. Is that lack of experienced members or problems with communication between team parts? Nobody knows, but it's clear that we see some peoples mistakes that made this game dying.

I managed to get through some of it. But it's hard not to switch off when he's still claiming to have found, now 2, Smear Campaigns with no evidence and commenting, as a professional gamer, that no-one would pick them up. - Sounds legit...

Not pointing the finger at anyone in particular but content creators are great at speculation and hype - it's how they get clicks and therefore earn money - and that may well be a contributing factor to people's disalusionment. I have no idea what the ratio of "satisfied" to jaded players is, but those who brought into the hype are likely to be those who actively follow content creators as they were pumped with more hype than those of us who only watch the occasional video.

The release that, according to CIG, is right around the corner for... how many years now?
You will forgive me for not holding my breath. But I will certainly give it a look once it's out.

I won't go into the rest of your rant. You seem to be angry with anybody who's not happy with Odyssey, and that rarely leads to healthy discussions. I have elaborated multiple times why I think a lot of bad decisions have been made on the road to Odyssey, and I don't want to repeat them ad nauseam.
Have a look when it's out, but more like IF it's ever out.

It's more shock, than anger. I understand people not being happy with ED or EDO. But when they're unhappy because they expected C, when C has been clearly made known wont be in the game, then why are those folks expecting C? And its not the new players, it's those who were fine with beige planets for 3 years, who know when FDev gave us ground based vehicles, it's 1, not many, etc. Not only that, but the multitude of posts just reiterating C isn't in the game as if thats the end of the world. Then, to point out that numbers are low, because C isn't in the game, telling everyone not to get this game, to go play other things, then complain numbers are low. Ad nauseam indeed.

According to SC devs, VR is meerely a click of a few buttons away, so you should be happy that shortly after release and some bugs removed, they may get their VR added. Looking forward to that, myself.
They said that in 2015. Your comment is really a pretty decent example of really odd thing: people are way, way more forgiving of studios if they promise big enough lies. VR is objectively and without any shred of a doubt infinitely better in ED. But because it isn't perfect (only ships and srvs, legs need vorpx) and FD honestly said they dont yet know if they can do legs too people jump to SC. Despite it being completely absent with literally zero steps taken in seven years.

But they promised.

FPS AI, mission variety, server stability, client stability, planet tech, game loops, general performance, in-game monetization: even all the things that are in ways problematic in ED are still miles beyond SC.

Pretty fascinating.

It's like how someone rebounds to a new relation after a break-up deceives themselves into thinking the first person they saw is really awesome and much better than the previous person.

The ratio of satisfied to people who think it is trash can be extrapolated from steam reviews, except by people who don't like the obvious conclusion that points to, so steam reviews don't count.

It's the nature of YouTube personalities. It's important to say what your audience wants to hear. If they are upset, you are upset. If they consider another game you have to quickly lure them to a new thing. The only way to do that is to stomp on the old thing and praise the new thing.

Once the people who jumped from ED to SC realize what the game factually is OA for example will turn like a leaf in the wind. But as long as the honeymoon phase lasts you won't hear a peep from him. :)

To be fair, OA started doing SC stuphs a couple of years ago along with other space games and MS Flight Sim as well. Diversifying his portfolio, so to speak.

Most of the other content creators... you're 100% spot on. I think they're like a fair chunk of the current ED player base, taking a break from the game for a bit, trying some other things, until Odyssey is sorted out properly. I have to admit, I have Odyssey downloaded on my PC, its just sitting there - I haven't even played it yet, the sheer volume of negativity has gotten to me, and I don't want to go into it pre-blinkered. (Okay, it also has a fair whack to do with the nightmare of setting up a completely new stick and throttle from scratch, since it doesn't support it natively.)

You'd think from watching that video that Fdev had been livestreaming kittens being put in a blender
This provided me with the unsettling image of a YouTube channel dedicated to cat blending. The chat log beneath their latest video is a long list of subscribers with dogs as their avatars. The comments are blandly horrifying.

DogzNotMogz77: "Cool channel, m8. Put teh tabby in next "

buddy_the_culinarian: "My friend Max says that marmalade cats actually taste of oranges!"

PhysicsDog: "What's the torque on the new KitchenAid and can anyone suggest how to calculate the Shear Modulus of a kitten?"

Apologies to cat lovers.

Same boat. I've looked at D2EA's initial Star Citizen videos, and it LOOKS good.

But like you, I just can't see past the pyramid scheme. Buy the game. Buy the addons. Buy ships. Buy credits. The aggravating part is that buying them with real money is the ONLY way you get to keep them, since periodically everyone who's accumulated stuphs in-game via credits (I think in-game, a decent ship costs about 1.5m credits, per D2EA, which can be farmed in 8-10 hours of gameplay "if you're doing it right") gets wiped back to the start, ostensibly to "promote fairness." The cynic in me can't help but think "No, its to promote people parting with their hard-earned so that they don't keep getting the things they've worked for taken from them."

Honestly, if the wipe didn't exist I'd probably give it a go. But I'm a casual gamer with not a ton of time, so the idea of building up a character and inventory, taking a month or two break, then coming back to find it all gone with the shrug of "well, if you loved the ship that much, you can buy it for just $100 of real money..."

I don't think I'd be too pleased at that.

I disagree partly. Most of the CC that are often mentioned for ED have been tailoring their content around ED, for the most part.
They are not the 600k sub dude who jump from one hyped game to the next.

People like OA or even Yamicks have been doing ED content first and foremost. They do it because they like it first (don't tell Yamicks I said that). That's what pushed them to do that in the first place. You don't spend years doing hours of content every week on a game you don't like to play.

While they are not going to stay and play a game that doesn't "pay the bill", even if they like it, they are not going to switch game willy nilly either.

For a CC specializing in a few games, it's always a risky move to change. People don't like changes. Some of their audience follow them because of "that game". The game you play next might not be what your audience like.

So...dude's mad because he spent EIGHTEEN hours A DAY playing the game and couldn't be the first player to unlock all the engineers, so he soft threatens FDev with not making videos about their game? And then something about having to feed his children? As has been said....total lack of perspective.

I had the audacity to install Scam Citizen on a HDD. It loaded for I kid you not.. 5-10 minutes. Then just kept lagging. It only works from an SSD apparently :D So eff that, especially when its like 80GB atm. I rather use that space for CP2077.
