New PC - love to hear your opinion!

This is the build I'm looking at - the text is ripped from the "basket" I've saved the item to. I'm useless at building stuff so I'll be getting Scan Computers to build it - I've used them a lot in the past and they're great, although not cheap.

It's primary use willl be ED (naturally!) but it will also be a general workhorse for all sorts of stuff - probably not content creation though although I may dabble with OBS a bit.

might get as high as a blistering 20fps in odyssey ;)
joking aside very nice indeed! and I have seen scan builds good tidy workmanship
if not knocking it up yourself just one crit
I don't like evga probably coincidental but have seen too many evga cards that need reballing after a couple of years
and some faulty ones straight out of the box
It's funny you should say that because my gtx980ti blew last week. Initially it was a suspected psu as the rig just died. But yeah, that was an EVGA gpu.

It may take many, many months for that system to actually arrive. If you need a pc now, you kinda have to buy a preset one. :/
I ordered parts from New Egg but I didn't need a graphics card. Only had 1 part on back order and when the estimated date came and went without an update, I found an alternative. It was the m.2 1TB stick I was going to use as the boot drive. Went with a samsung instead of the western digital black.

It appeared that all graphics cards were on backorder.

All that is to say that yes, depending on what parts you need it may take some time to get the system. I assemble my own computers and had the 2080ti from the previous that I just transferred to the new. So I was lucky.

If you tag Morbad, he'll probably rip my suggestions to shreds with some very good and solid arguments :).

Until then:
Ryzen 7: (y)
X570 mobo: meh. Yes, the chipset can deliver a lot - but the B550 only gives a little less, for a much lower price
Cooler: 1 up for AIO water cooling, 1 down for not including the GPU (yes, in your case, that would drive the waiting time and/or the price through the roof. Yes, there are aftermarket AIO watercoolers for GPUs - I have one from them. They don't look as cool or clean as a custom setup, but on the other hand I at least have my PC hanging under the desk...)
Memory: (n). Too small for one thing, but also that completely superfluous RGB lighting 🤮
GPU: meh for me - NVidias right now are short on memory, but big on power draw
SSD: meh. Samsung usually isn't that much more expensive - but they're the guys who actually manufacture the chips
HDD: belongs into an independent NAS. Oh, and think about a backup solution.
Independent sound card: why? Do you have such good ears, or will you be using the PC for music production? in either case, pass for me.
RGB lighting: I already mentioned 🤮
MS Windows Pro 10: good question, with Win 11 lurking around the corner and nothing but rumors so far about upgrade paths and the future differences between Pro and Home. But basically (y)

Might be easiest to link to the Scan system build page you are using so we can see what other options are available. As Ashnak has mentioned, there appears to be quite a few component choices that have more economical or useful alternatives. A quick browsing of Scan's site suggests that an in-stock RTX 3080 could probably be squeezed in with the same CPU and budget you're targeting.

As far as memory goes, 16GiB is probably enough if you don't do much heavy multi-tasking, but it will probably result in less performance...because of topology rather than capacity. Modern dual-rank DIMMs with a capacity of only 8GiB are quite uncommon (essentially non-existent at higher speed grades) and you want two ranks per channel as this enables rank interleaving. It's not a huge deal, of course, but it's easily as significant as the difference between 3200MT/s and 3600MT/s, all other things being equal.

It's effectively this but with adjustments:

Thanks Ashnak, thought provoking!

On the memory, I'm trying to keep costs down a bit with a view to more sticks at a later stage.

On the sound card, yes, I do have rather exacting hearing and sound, for me, is ultra important for immersion. I know mobo sound chips are great these days however, so I will ponder on this.

Scan must have a partnership with Corsair, which limits available options somewhat, and after seeing the prices of the memory, I would also get the 2x8GiB kit with an eye on supplementing it with, or replacing it outright, with something more economical in the future.

Anyway, I'd recommend using the least expensive motherboard, the cheapest 1TB NVMe SSD, and the least expensive AIOs on that list. The board is still overkill; the SSD won't be perceptibly slower, despite being half the cost (and you can always add a second, faster, M.2 later, if you need one); and all of the Corsair AIOs use similar pumpblocks (the absolute thermal load of a 5800X is not high, so the extra radiator area is not going to improve temperatures much). Normally, I'd recommend an air cooler over most AIOs, but since they are presumably going to have to ship this system, the AIO is likely going to handle transport better. That said, if you are confident in their packaging/shipping, getting the Dark Rock 4 will save a bit more money, for negligible performance loss (and will last longer).

I'd still go for a 3080 over a 3070 Ti. It's a fairly large step up. The ASUS TUF says it's in stock and while the price is high relative to the EVGA model, it is one of the best 3080 versions.

Unless you have an excellent sound system and very low ambient noise, or high-end headphones/in-ear monitors, onboard audio is not going to be anywhere near the weakest link. Also, if you're sending digital audio anywhere the source audio device is largely meaningless as the DACs will be at the destination.

OK all! The final build takes into account everything you've come back with plus a few of my choices. The biggest changes are the GPU, RAM and cooler:

  • NZXT H710i
  • ASUS ROG STRIX X570-E GAMING
  • AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, Zen 3, 8-core with SMT, 3.8GHz, 4.7GHz Turbo
  • be quiet! Dark Rock 4 - Quiet Performance Air Cooler
  • 32GB (2x16GB) Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO - 3600MHz
  • IN STOCK 10GB ASUS GeForce RTX 3080 TUF GAMING OC, 8704 Cores, 1740MHz Boost, GDDR6X
  • Corsair RM750x, Modular, Silent, 80PLUS GOLD - up to RTX 3090 / RX 6800 XT
  • 1TB WD Blue SN550, 2400MB/s Read, 1950MB/s Write, 410K IOPS
  • 2TB Seagate ST2000DM008 BarraCuda, 7200rpm, 64MB Cache
  • Asus DVD Reader/Writer - External
  • ASUS STRIX RAID PRO
  • Standard RGB Lighting
  • Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 64-Bit
Order placed!

SO - THANKS!
