Big Elite Streamers Giving Up On Streaming Elite?

I've been a software developer for 25+ years. That means I know how projects are killed off in the corporate space... I've seen it all the time. The signs are always the same.
Been in the game much the same length of time myself and would tend to agree with you, I certainly get that whiff of 'dead game walking'... Given this I wouldn't write ED off quite yet, although perhaps that's just me being hopeful. The one thing that I think will stop FDev pulling the plug, at least in the near future, is that they're already going to have to cover for missed revenue targets within the next year. Add losing the flagship product to that and that'll likely cost Braben his current position, and I'm sure he'd rather not bow out yet.

During the two years between Beyond Chapter 4 and Odyssey, we had four medium-sized updates:

Development didn't stop, for either the live game or the new expansion.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Frontier confirm that they were still working on E: D during that time period - even though it clearly went into "maintenance mode" for a significant time, and only a small team (Frontier's words) was actually working on the base game? Everyone else was supposedly working on the "new era" (Odyssey), and that excuse was what was used to pacify the player base?

But still... four patches in two years for a live service game... wow. I stand corrected...

We're in a totally different situation here. A lot has happened, and a lot of money has been lost, so that changes the ballpark significantly IMO.

Maintenance mode doesn't have any patches, let alone new features like what was added in those four medium-sized updates.

Just because you don't like what those updates added, doesn't mean that they didn't exist.

"But they don't need to make an announcement or statement to just... quietly stop development. After all, they did that for the 2 years leading up to the Odyssey release, while the issue tracker was ignored" is objectively wrong.

As I said, wow. Four minor patches over the course of two years for a live service game does nothing to convince anybody that this project is important to Frontier's future. The issue tracker has things going back longer than that.

What happened to the "10 year development plan" mentioned in the Kickstarter?

What happened to "100 developers working on Elite" that we were told?

How long did the beige plague last again?

For me, I think FDev would have been considering pulling the plug on Elite if:
  • They hadn't screwed themselves over by releasing it too soon (or not labelling it Early Access) as this was a massive, avoidable self-own.
  • Their share price hadn't tanked.
The former will be discussed as "if we held it back, what would have happened?" and "if we'd labelled it Early Access, would the community have accepted that better?".

The latter showed FDev that shareholders/investors take serious notice of Elite Dangerous, and intrinsically link the flagship product's reputation to the company itself. Kill the game's reputation = kill the company's reputation. And the company's reputation matters for getting and keeping big juicy IPs like Formula 1 (Formula 1 Group are notoriously protective of their brand), or something like Disney for a Planet Coaster sequel (see that leak from couple years ago).

I think you are watching different streamers to those being talked about in this thread. ;)

Personally, I learned how to explore the Guardian ruins through a streamer. I've learned how to fly a four engine plane in MSFS from an actual airline pilot streaming the game.

There is lots of knowledge they can impart. Everyone knows something you don't. 🤷‍♀️ #lifehack

Cool you agree then that development didn't stop. I'm glad that's cleared up (y)

Yep agreed, but it may as well have done... and it definitely slowed substantially. Which is why I reference it in my speculation that FDev could simply just stop working on E: D after the console release - no announcement - and nobody would be any the wiser.

Note that you didn't answer any of my questions and instead just attacked my wording - interesting.

I really wonder why someone who is clearly convinced that this game is on its end, who see nothing positive and who think that there is nothing worthy added over years already and is assured there is nothing more planned, is still hanging here on forums and spread negativity with each post.

And sadly, "ignore user" function on these forums is not working well enough ...

a) promising they would do so at the end of June
Can you point me to the source of this? I am genuinely asking, as I see people mentioning they have "promised a roadmap", but I have missed this information. Tried to find the source, but couldn't. Honest, I am not joking or being cheeky.

I'm sure you're capable of googling the answers to your questions 😂

Fair enough... it's a big thread. Easy to miss things.

But this post about covers it, I think.

It was in a livestream around 4 June. Arf asked that community give them to the end of June at which time the future of Odyssey from the dev perspective would be clearer.

I dare say, but that would give me Google's answer to the questions, when I'm asking you. Or anyone else on this forum really... not whichever post happens to make it into the top 10 search results.

It was specifically a dev livestream that was promised. Many picked up on it, and the audio of it can be heard on various utuber's channels when it... didn't happen.

Thanks, I'll have a look for it.
