Big Elite Streamers Giving Up On Streaming Elite?

I confess I bought NMS in a Steam Christmas sale a couple of years ago, played it for a couple of hours, and caught myself thinking, "This isn't a space game. This is an inventory management game that happens to be set in space."

At which point I put it aside - the great thing about Elite Dangerous is that Inara does my inventory management for me, bookkeeping not really being my thing.

But if what you say is true, perhaps I should give NMS another go.
i see it as a survival game set in space - but you are mainly on planets doing stuff. So if you expected EDO to be kind of an interesting exploration expansion, then you might like NMS - btw if you want to avoid all the grind (which i don't see as such, but a part of the survival aspect of the game), there is a "creative mode" as well - then you don't have to worry about materials and unlocking crafting and so on. Nothing I would choose, but maybe it is interesting for you.

Yep, it's best not to think of NMS as a "space game" since that's not where it shines. That's on the planets you explore. Agree on Creative mode, it lets you play with all the base building stuff without the "grind" to get there. You have up to 5 save slots, and I usually have at least one Creative slot on the go.

But I normally wipe my saves after every patch and start anew.

I think many will be back anyway before then, because E: D is still their core audience. Obsidian Ant just did a video today (possibly taking notes from this thread that he participated in earlier ;) ) which started off a new monthly series on "The State of the Game".

Although he'll still make E: D videos, I felt there was a bit of a hint in his voice that there will be fewer for now... might be wrong. Be interesting to see if he still does his 330X series.

he started the "one earth" series about MSFS locations worth visiting - he posted the one about scotland as an example - really well done, didn't expect less from him, but this is even better than expected - the scotland one, i mean.

I think the comment I've heard around many places now "the Game is at a Crossroads" is absolutely correct.

The Decisionmakers now have two simple Options - none of which are easy.
  • ignore everything and continue as if nothing happened, allowing the Game and their Reputation to tank further and indeed risk crossing the rubicon... invalidating and trashing several years of hard work over a single, huge mistake
  • take a deep breath, allocate a significant amount of Resources (yes, that likely means delaying other IP) and give Odyssey alot more content. This requires Odyssey to be treated like a Season and be given a RoadMap. And I mean a real RoadMap, a solid plan which should likely include the Community (most-requested Features and QOL improvements).

Right now, I'm not seeing any RoadMap. Just Confusion and Damage Control.
The major additional Problem is : time is now working against them and is running out. Tic-Toc. Tic-Toc. Tic-Toc.

Essentially their only Option at this critical junction is to pull a "NMS recovery". That requires Determination, Resources, Creativity and Time.
btw. another brute-force series of discounts or free giveaways won't work. No Player retention. And exactly that is needed, not only to sell Store Items.
Galaxy needs persistent or ideally a growing population, even moreso in this ultra-fragmented and scattered-across-a-Million-Instances P2P ELITE.
That honestly shouldn't even be an option, there's really only the second - just a look at the forums will tell you that the Elite section has more traffic than every other one combined. Per their last financials, there's 12 million ED players, compared to 1.5m Planet Zoo, 3m Planet Coaster, 4m for Jurassic World Evolution, so again - more copies of Elite Dangerous sold than their other games combined. They now have the Frontier Foundry thing going, but that's more them acting as a publishing house, since other companies are actually building the likes of Struggling and Lemnis Gate.

Elite is what got them started years ago, and really is still their bread and butter. Frontier would do well to remember that (and am sure they're nowhere near silly enough not to. Well, fairly sure...)

Priceless (y)
but not true - we all like different aspects of gaming - i find shooting pirates pretty boring for example, i rather mess around on planets with some interesting content on them. i like as well the management aspect - I'm not a hoarder, i select carefully what i need and limited storage space makes this more interesting - because it is a resource then.

I have played over 200+ Hrs of NMS and still fully agree with the statement I replied priceless to.

I mean I respect what Hello Games have done, it's impressive. I just bounce off it every time I try it, and trust me I've tried many times. It's just not for me.

ha, then why not play permadeath - if you are used to start over again, this might be the right mode for you then and add some spice to exploration.

There's every chance in 6 months things will have moved on and the game will be in a far better place, once the devs have gone through what needs to be done and given the CMs permission to tell us.

Or, ED will be done.

We will see.

I understand you somewhat - if you expect a spaceship game, it isn't that - you spend more time on planets than in your ship.
