3rd person view.

Greetings

I'm talking way down the line here when we get to get out of the ships and walk around, I just watched what Star Citizen has to offer with their FPS play and was disturbed to see that they had 3rd person views.

I really hope ED does not follow this path but stick strictly to first person views, I really hate 3rd person it breaks immersion straight away.

What are everyone else's views on this subject?

There will be a 'kind of' third person view with a drone which you can use to look at your ship, inspect asteroid type of thing. But it has been stressed that there will be no third person way to fly your ship.

I know right?? Anyone who even mentions this should be at best immediately banned, or furthermore hung/drawn & quartered

Walking about will probably be 1st person only to stick with the aesthetics and game decisions by FD.

Prefer 3rd though as the world in games just look odd from a proper perspective

we already have a long thread on this.... and its already been answered many times. But still here goes....

I am not that fussed about external views... but many are, so, IF FD can find a way to implement it so it has zero advantage in combat - and I am not listing all of those possible exploits as they are many and in the other thread - but IF they can, personally I have no problem with them as so many seem to want them.

It wont affect my immersion so long as I do not have to use them.

also, in solo or offline I am not bothered either.

but bear in mind, in to many games outside views offer a significant advantage esp if you can flip flop between them instantly and at will, so if it was to be in ALL then imo FD would need to tread v carefully or risk spoiling it for those who bought into the orignal vision.

I too saw that 3rd person vid on foot and I thought it looked odd and wooden...... some 3rd person games if done well can be really good.... but generally combat in 3rd person is often way more clunky than 1st person imo (take GTA, or, well anything by R* really)

imo 1st person is easier to get working right, and elite has always been about 1st person view in your ship, imo it stands to reason to keep it that way on foot too imo.

Indeed, arguably 3rd person on foot will be a massive issue for people playing 1st person on foot if it comes to a gun fight, unless aiming and controls is completely nerfed in 3rd person (which would make a rubbish game experience like in GTA IV - a great game but all bar the most blinkered fan would probably admit its gunplay sucks.... OR you make the 3rd person play work really well, like say Gears of War, and us 1st person players would be toast, as the huge field of view will mean almost certain victory imo.

Well - he isn't talking about third person view on ships but third person camera in the yet to be released ship/station/planetary walking addon(s).

But yeah, you're right - the same exploits apply.

yeah I realised that half way into my post, so edited a little to bring more inline.

though on foot, or in ship, the concerns, as you say, are the same.... or maybe even more so.

in ship there are lots of excuses for having machinery which offers 3rd person views.... but, on foot... in the middle of no where, there is kind of no real reason why a person would be able to see from anything other than the 1st person perspective imo.

You'd be surprised what the arcade crowd comes up with when defending their point of view:

I know all their arguments from following the discussion on Arma. The most competent answer I've come across is this one, imho:

3rd person view? Definitely no...

But external view like a directors cut, I say Yes.

Yeah - I've been advocating for post-hoc flight recordings with free camera placement as it would help the games promotion via youtubers, but any real-time third person camera is potentially game breaking.

I Would love to have a Photo Mode like in the newer Gran Turismo Games.
Offline and only to make cool Screenshots and Videos. Or a replay system with free rotating cameras. THAT would be nice!

Oh yes I was thinking the very same thing! Brilliant! :D

I believe external views would be really nice in the game. Watching my ship drifting and leaving trails behind as lights reflect on it passing by asteroids is truly a nice experience. I don't think that it's "stealing" like some people say, if it is it's like having a head tracker advantage compare to someone that he does not have.
Replay is a nice idea also. :D

Even if they put in a 3rd person view, you are not forced to use it. Many FPS and RPG games have the 3rd person view and I never use it. I find it disorienting. But I have no problem with ED offering whatever options, for those who want them. Some people will say that the 3pv will unbalance the game or whatever. I don't really agree with that. People who use the 3pv are not serious simmers and in my book their skills will never measure up to the players that are.

Third person view when not in combat is acceptable. Cause during combat it gives unfair advantages.
