State of the Game

Open letters work man - once they started using my template...

I'm very grateful to Lord Brebus for promising to include some of the features that were supposed to be in the next DLC (you know, the one they were expecting to be working on after Odyssey was released in Q1 2021) in the patches for the current disaster.

i somehow dont think a post about the future by the person who's statements about what would be in the game turning out to be contradicted by the company is going to convince those people upset about that to change their tune.

but i'm always open to being surprised by good fortune.

That's because you're not a True Believer in Brebus' Holy Gospel of Soon™

People were doing that off "the egg" even without Fleet Carriers. Amazing that the people screaming blue murder about the bugs in Odyssey (and yes, there were many!) had absolutely zero problems with the ones that allowed get rich quick schemes.
there's always people complaining about get rich quick schemes. But it's so constant, that it is like complaining to a wall. Most have given up that battle. Fdev wants them (most of the time) because it placates the players enough to ignore the grind and weak gameplay.

Someone worked out that he'd (if his claim of 15,000 hours in game was true) played 7 hours a day, every day, since launch. There's another thread that popped up where a guy is claiming he started in March of last year and has almost 3,000 hours. Again, over 7 hours a day, EVERY day. Same ones complaining that Frontier have swindled them with a dodgy game. I mean, its not like they've not gotten their money's worth!

or, perhaps 12 hours a day for roughly half as many years. Or perhaps they're just botting it for the past 2-3 years at nearly 24 hours a day every other day - more or less.

regardless, the real complaints were about odyssey, which nobody is saying they've gotten thousands of hours in and still feel swindled. Plus, those that are and have played more than a couple hours are full of crap.

But measuring hours of play time with satisfaction in a game is always misleading.

An open ended game is about the cumulative experience you've had and a change made 2000 hours in that kills the game for you is no different than an update in a game with an ending that makes reaching that ending impossible.

More features = more items to skin = more micro transactions = more profit

Unless you're a Doomer you have to accept that FDev planned to do something after Odyssey, so we'll get some of that over the next 6-9 months just to keep the White Knights polishing their armor.
This thread is no place for serious discussion but honestly no, I never imagined that Elite would get another paid DLC after Odyssey and for clarity, that was my opinion before the Odyssey alpha (the actual alpha) even released. No DOOOOOM required, games have a shelf life and in terms of likely revenue for a future paid DLC vs likely development time (don't forget there was a six year gap between Horizons and Odyssey), I felt Elite had pretty much crapped its hole full. I can't say I've seen anything to change my mind on that. Not saying I imagined the servers getting turned off or anything (and indeed I still don't) just that it had probably run its course in terms of significant future development.

So to sum up, it's a train wreck...

it's a little off topic to talk about your childhood...and really none of our business.

this is a thread about the state of the game. which is something so complex, that it can only be properly communicated via cat media

But, but, the DDF! The 10 Year Plan, the Kickstarter 'promises', the Holy Roadmap!!!

UNBELIEVER!!!!

Went for a casual stroll in the mad outside. Seems the mood out there following Lord Brebus' announcement has changed from:

"WHY ISN'T ANYBODY LISTENING, WE WANT CHANGE AND COMMUNICATIONS!'

to:

"WE DON'T LIKE IT, AND YOU'RE LYING ANYWAY AND WHERE ARE THE FIXES, IT'S ALMOST BEEN 12 HOURS ALREADY!!!!1!"

So... situation normal?

Back to the comforting, warm sanity of this thread it is, then.

it all doesn't matter what ideas we come up with... we've had this kind of song and dance before about core gameplay.

All we can hope for is that whoever is calling the shots and making the decisions this time is someone totally different from all the previous times, has actually and still actually plays the game... and has a vision of how they can make it better and the ability to actually deliver that vision.
Rationally seen this is a decision based on 2 "facts" - 1. they know that they cannot finish the console version in time anyway - 2. player numbers are dwindling and some former fans of the game are turning away from it in disgust - these 2 lead to "we have to act on this, it's really critical, but on the positive side, we got a player-acceptable reason to postpone the console version as well". So in the end they think of turning around both facts into something positive, if they change their development target back to the PC.

What they still didn't get though is the loss of hope for the future of the game - this has to be addressed with something better than that they will add some new content as well. For now it is not progress yet - because they shift attention from console version, which couldn't be completed anyway in time, back to the PC -that is all it really means - packed into some soothing words, but it doesn't mean much more yet.
