State of the Game

biggest enemy in my garden are the stunt slugs, and parachuting snails - they are destroying my Borlotti beans!
There is absolutely no way they should be able to get to them, but every day - a few more leaves / plants disappear !
I had the same issue. I tried various methods of persuasion, and even stayed up one night picking them off, in an effort to avoid snailocide. But it was a losing battle, so I gave up and used the pellets. Twenty fatalities in the first night, and they were all massive. No wonder my beans were in trouble!

So what is a 'proper' Mexican chili / taco meal?

I make a decent meat chili with home made salsa, crunchy lettuce, guacamole, creme fraiche blob, hot sauce on a bed of nachos.

I have no idea what 'real' is.
I don't know how to make it, but I do know where to get it around here. Mostly, that means local mom'n'pop Mexican restaurants.

Not much help, I know. :(

A few things I know is to make everything from scratch. Ground meat, pico de gallo, cheese, sour cream, jalapeno or habanero sauce depending on how hot you want it and refried beans if you absolutely must have them. I'm not overly thrilled by the beans, but it can be pretty good. And make sure to heat the taco shells.

Edit: Your mix sounds pretty good, by the way. The only thing I'd add to it would be sliced, pickled jalapenos/habaneros!

I forgot I toast the nachos a bit with some nice Manchego and (when I have them which is not often) I do thinly slice some mildish chilis (as not to kill the kinder).

I tend to add red kidney beans to the meat, which is just meat + seasonings (paprika, cumin, salt and pepper and cayenne).

If I'm feeling boss man that day I'd make some flatbreads as wraps (or toast a bit).

Regardless I love the meal, because of the hot / tangy / crunchy / creamy mellow tastes going on.

Never had a Taco Bell, but brown paste - I presume that was refried beans?
I love refried beans - sadly the missus can't stand them, so we don't have them often. I may have to go and but some (in a can over here), and make some for the weekend.
Refried beans are Mexican Marmite

Edit:
Also, Cuban black beans are a vastly superior legume-based commodity.

Depends on who makes it. I remember a Mexican mamacita who worked on the cleaning crew at my office who, for some reason, had decided that it was time for her to take me under her wings and show me some real home made cooking, and I was IMMENSELY grateful! I've never been able to view "authentic" Mexican food the same way ever since!

Declutter, make as much space around them as possible, encourage frogs and toads / birds to eat them.

I have a massive toad, hedgehogs and loads of birds who just tuck in all the time.
Sounds like a busy garden, how does anything dare to go there?

I have mostly experience from growing apples and umm.. cats. Cats would make sort of pathways into long grass, dotted with nests used for sleeping.

Lolol - I got 'adopted' at work too, but mine was by a Brazilian. She kept trying to feed me flan 🤣

Its more about giving snails and slugs less places to hide. Old pots, under stuff- its not foolproof but it does help.

Also going out at dusk, picking them up and chucking them away.

For bugs, you'll want to capture a number of bugs of the various species you dont want around and impale them on spikes around the perimeter of the garden. This intimidates and scares the other bugs into staying away.

for bugs with less eyesight or supernatural bugs, you'll want to place a ring of salt around the garden. Demonic bugs can't cross the salt barrier, and neither can snails.

For the larger animals where the impalement fence would draw too much attention from nosey neighbors and meddling gods, you should implement an ultrasonic fence that drives most small animals away.

For any larger animals that have poor hearing or aren't deterred by the fence like a bird or something, i suggest getting a scarecrow for the garden. You can probably find one cheap from a halloween store between the season and to make it even more effective, give it a huge wolf head (mask also from halloween store) and one of those hawk sound chip things based on motion.

or just goto the grocery store for vegetables.

NMS just didn't appeal with the cartoony graphics, whereas I always found EDH visually bang on for my taste - but it does sound like NMS has undergone a revolution of improvement, and I think now fully VR compatible so maybe it's time to give it a try whilst I wait for Odissee (sorry, couldn't help it... 🤣) to be sorted out.

I just love the gritty 'realism' of EDH though...
just give it a good enough try - let's say 50 hrs played - and just go with the flow of the game, follow the tutorial at first to the point where you discover the anomaly space station, explore it and speak with the inhabitants - from that time on you can basically choose a path or switch between paths or just do your thing. I liked to learn about the alien languages for example - for that you need to follow the search for Artemis path for a while, which is offered in the anomaly space station. So I spoke to a lot of aliens in space stations learning words from them and testing my language skills from time to time with some of them. Over time they got really impressed with my efforts and granted me technology and upgrades. I learned to find stuff, which I can offer them as a gift and some offer me something in return as well - often sometimes quite valuable stuff.

There are so many ways in which you can have fun - in the later game I will most likely install a couple of farms and as well a research facility (I got several applications from alien scientist to work at my base, if I just create a workplace for them). you know, that is entrepreneurial activities, exactly that what I need, I can have plantations, research facilities or use tamed animals to fuel my bioreactor with their feces, I can ride them eventually, airborne, on land or under water. There is an incredible amount of ways to enjoy the game and it opens up when you have tried it for long enough with an open mind towards a different game play than that of ED. It is all what EDO could have been but isn't.

Before I forget it - try to start out on an icy planet - the colors there are not as vibrant as in other places.

realism isn't something i would depend on for elite dangerous.

elite has plenty that is totally on par with the realism of nms.

what elite has that nms absolutely doesn't though is how you fly a space ship and the amount of things you do while flying your space ship.

if flying a space ship is your thing, then NMS is not going to scratch that itch.
