Air is getting thin for Star Citizen

£300...for pixel spaceships?

Not mentioning that I'm a concierge backer. No siree

People spend $1,000's supporting the development of SC but all you need to spend is $45 (USD) and then do missions (combat/non combat) to purchase/upgrade a new ship using in-game credits.

SC is perfectly playable (minus bugs) with the starter ships without ever buying another ship depending on what your goals are in the game.

I've been in both games from start (almost). SC is wonderous and way beyond ED in immersive surroundings.
X4 Foundations is wondrous and way beyond ED in immersive trading and combat. The more I play it, the more it ruins Elite for me. I just joined the Argons in their war against the HOP, and I'm running patrols in a contested sector in a new ship I designed, named the Iron Fist. It's an Argon gunboat with four plasma turrets and two heavy torpedo launchers, and my oh my does it pack a punch! (Hence the name.) It's so refreshing to have torpedoes that are actually useful! Their handicap is that they are slow and can be shot down by defense turrets, so I can't just go blowing up enemies in easy mode, I have to get in close, take out the turrets, then fire the torpedoes to first cripple and then finally finish off the target. Like a submariner of old, this ship is an awesome and fearsome weapon against trade convoys, but it's weak against military ships (a few hits from large weapons will finish me, as will swarms of fighters), so I need to be careful as I patrol the "seas".

My point is that there's a sense of actual strategy and tactics that's just makes ED feel like a simple arcade game in comparison. I can blockade choke points, disrupt supply lines, use different ships for different scenarios, bring in trading ships to clean up all the spilled cargo to sell for my own profit, capture abandoned enemy ships, coordinate attacks between myself and my wings, the list goes on and on. And like Elite, I play primarily as the pilot flying my ship from the cockpit in the thick of the action. In fact, my biggest disappointments with X4 usually are related to the "building an empire" side of the game, not the "flying my spaceship" side.

Right now the only thing ED gives me in regards to space combat that X4 doesn't is VR and PvP, so I'm not uninstalling ED yet, but while the VR headset remains packed away (the rest of the hot summer months), ED will remain unplayed in favor of X4 for combat and trading. I also have NMS for on-foot exploration, Space Engineers for "this is MY ship" gameplay, and Space Engine for Stellar Forge exploration. I guess I have to give ED credit - it takes four different games to totally replace it, and even then only two of those support VR.

I've been a backer of the project since 2015...I'm also an active regular player and tester (ex evocati)... have been since the beginning. I sorta know how it all works :)

Join us in the relevant SC discussion thread on this forum, you know you want to.. ;)

Good info for the unwashed masses that are in the dark.

Ive been a backer since 2014... stopped Alpha Testing in 2015 until Squadron 42 - Episode 1 debuts for retail.

Yeah I played x4, it just lacks ship connection, being able to walk around or indeed build your own ship, which is something I love.
Space Engineers is the better ship builder game and indeed physics, however it lacks the variety of Empyrion, but for sure SE is probably my all time space game fav for building, I wish SE & Emp could join together, SE building Emp's universe, npc's and variety.
I like them all for different reasons, space games are so great. But building and flying my own ship is really a must for me now, I don't mind the graphics so much, because I need content and there is nothing like flying the ship you built.

I'm entertaining the idea of building my own ship for X4 using the mod tools, assuming such a thing is possible. I have no idea how modding works in X4, but if I can import an model from Blender and actually fly it, that would be the ultimate in ship design.

Though I do agree with you that the actual process of building a ship in SE is very rewarding - I do enjoy working with welders, grinders, printers, etc.

Curious... any updates on this comment now that ED is playing with the "big boys" such as Star Citizen?

Fascinating watching the WAVE of ED CMDRs ... flowing into SC with "first impression" channels now dedicated to Star Citizen and being blown away from the experience and immersion.

A good and fair experience in the series from this ED CMDR journalizing their experience for the first time.

No you lie!

Star Citizen is a scam I swear!!!!

......

guys?

Don't walk away and play SC R EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Too bad we can just squish them all together and make one good one.
I wouldn't want ALL the things from all the games, but if you took the best part of each game and made a new one with each of these, I'd never leave my computer!
  • Elite's Stellar Forge and galaxy map (and the better parts of the flight model)
  • Space Engineers "space / EVA legs", ship interiors, zero-G, and damage & repair model
  • X4's economy and NPC system (and the better parts of the flight model)
  • No Man's Sky proc gen (adjusted for ED's SF) and "sense of wonder" exploration
  • Flight Simulator's amazing graphics and weather system
  • Every game's (except ED) ability to be modded ;)

Other people's 'best part' may vary.

I detect a very conspicuous lack of SC references in that list 😋
