General / Off-Topic Can a Steam Deck run Elite?

Can't think of any reasons why not. The only thing I really want to see is the readability of panels and the like.

Would be so cool to have Elite in your bag.

The panels are readable enough on my laptop so I don't see that as a major problem. My big fear would be that it doesn't run at all using Steam's Linux-based operating system. Does Elite play okay in SteamOS?

The more I hear about Steam Deck the more I like it. I'm not going to pre-order. But I'm sure it will gain a following in these Elite forums. I'll be watching to see how it goes for the early adopters

What resolution is your laptop?

The Steam Deck has a 1280*800 resolution 7" display....which is what I had on my ASUS Eee PC in 2008. I'm not sure that size and pixel density would be very comfortable for ED at typical view distances.

Of course, it's not hard to try ED in a 1280*800 window to see what it looks like.

My laptop's too old for Elite. I used to get it to work but It failed just now. I was running it at a lower resolution than native to get the framerate up, but I can no longer start the game up to see what that resolution was

I did need to use reading glasses to see what the numbers were. A 7" display will be even worse. That might be something you'll have to take into consideration

:unsure: If we have to put something on...

If it can push a pair of VR goggles, it can run Horizons at least. Probably would need a power outlet though... Thinking a hands on touchscreen control of the Galaxy Map would be cool.

Well, yes/no :D Launcher won't run for me, need manual install mono-patched-for-ed (.NET replacement). Which involves 5 mins of googling and typing 3 commands.
Then everything just works ok for long.

Erk!

Not exactly the plug'n'play solution I was hoping for. If the Steam Deck proves popular maybe FDev will patch their launcher to accommodate Steam Deck users

There does seem to be a wee bit of interest in whether it's powerful enough for VR. Even just plugging the headset in to use for a virtual 2D display might be quite handy

It caught my eye and I thought, "What's this?" But I've got a gaming laptop which is almost as portable and way more powerful. Playing games on a 15 inch laptop screen is already pushing the "kinda on the small side" for me, so I don't see going with a Nintendo Switch clone for the games I play. Imagine X4 on that screen? :eek:

I think one of the things that makes the Switch popular is that games are written with that device in mind. Animal Crossing is a very different game than most simulator-style games, though I guess racing games would be fine on the smaller screen. Heck, even NMS might work on that Steam Deck!

Still, I'd rather have a gaming laptop than a giant gaming desktop PC AND a Steam Deck. Combine the prices of both and my choice may actually be cheaper! How much does the SD actually cost? Do we know yet?

Yeah I discovered they are advertising the Deck on Steam itself. I think I'd rather get a Nintendo Switch if I were in the market for such a device - it's cheaper and it gives me access to games I can't otherwise easily get.

I'm surprised there is interest in this Steam Deck within the Elite community. Where and how do you folks plan to use it? You going to raid a settlement while sitting on the train on your way to work? Train rides are for forum banter, not serious gameplay ;)

I'll be sticking to my laptop for my mobile gaming.
