Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

Unfortunately there's still a sense of repetition that crops up surprisingly early. I sometimes think the game had more variety in the early days, and for some reason HG scaled back that variety. For now I'm using Panspermia as my headcanon to explain why I'm seeing the same plants on multiple planets.
That annoys me, too. I am really tired of coming across that headcrab creature - the one that looks like a brain with tentacles and hops around? Not only do I see it in every new playthrough, but I see it appear in the videos of others as well. It seems like certain assets are not procedural but hardwired into the game. Given some lore, that would be fine with me. For example, maybe the headcrabs are a galactic nuisance that needs to be exterminated. Something like that. But right now they are just annoying.

Thanks to Sean's recent community update (don't get excited, there is no news on the next expansion yet :) ), I just discovered that NMS has its own radio station in the vein of "Radio Sidewinder." It's called NMSFM and features music created by players using the ByteBeat music system, along with some humorous commercials. Worth a listen. I just wish they would play some electronic music as well and maybe use the ByteBeat stuff as filler.

As for the next update, Sean did write this:

Development Update

The team is currently working on a number of exciting things for No Man’s Sky, and we look forward to sharing more news soon!

There is a mod for draw distance but it really screws the fps

It's only really worth using if you have the system to cope with it. Generally, it's optimised by HG to console (last gen) capabilities.

For repetition, there's mods that will give you 1000s of new biome possibilities, which I use - but some plants are always going to be the same on every planet (the same 3 or 4 hazardous ones, and the resource ones (oxygen, sodium, etc)). But you get money for scanning each one, so it's not too bad. 🤷‍♀️

Remember, there is no spoon. 😋

You should share your recommended mods ;)

I can do, but I'm on my work PC at the moment (which doesn't have NMS installed, funnily enough ;) ), so I'm not sure of all the names.

Also, my mod list changes regularly. Generally it's Fast Actions / Small Cursor as essentials. Also some kind of jetpac mod, because the stock one is WAY underpowered and flying around a planet is the most fun way to travel across the landscape - especially looking for salvage materials. That tends to change patch by patch, because every patch always breaks it for some reason.

I also use a black space mod, and one to get rid of the horrible space snow. And another to add biomes, and another to fix the pop in, and another to make scanning faster.

Edit: Also use this mod which makes flying the ship a little more controllable and 'realistic'.

I'll update this post later with links. (edit: done)

Great, thanks. Will download them over the weekend.

This silly game just keeps amazing me. I had no idea that you can play "Tetris" with modules to increase their efficiency! I love it! Little details like this are awesome.

Here's my personal mod list so far:
  • Black Space (of course)
  • Dud's Color Pack
  • Skip's asteroid megamod
  • CSO "get rid of all the crap lines and clouds in space" mod
  • Megan Exosuit Voice
  • Chromatic Removal
  • Fine LOD
  • No Fade
I just added the No Fade tonight, and it really extends the draw distance, but now things just POP into place pretty awkward like. Still, I prefer the further draw distance, so I'll just stick with it and fly at higher altitude so I don't notice the pop-in as much. So far my performance feels good. It feels like 60 fps, but that may be in part due to the motion blur. I don't dare check it lest I ruin any placebo effect, LOL.

As you can see, the vast majority of my mods are visual, but I'm not ready to use anything that changes terrain generation since I'd like to play this game with my wife on PS4. So far I'm finding decent enough terrain, even if it is a bit samey between planets. I'm still having, "Oooooh, I've never seen that before!" moments, so I can't complain too much.

...I think it was brilliant on the part of Sean Murray to model the look of the game on the sci-fi book covers of the '70s and '80s. Since NMS is more of a sci-fi romp than it is a simulator, the artistic approach is entirely appropriate for its subject matter...
My feeling too, and the art style was a large part of what drew me to the game initially.

For a laugh I loaded up that 2018 save that I mentioned - not funny at all. Standing in a space station hangar with just about everything in my inventories (all of them) marked "Outdated Technology" (some-such wording).

Deleted the save.
You can break down that outdated tech, though, and quickly get all the modern updates you need with very little grind, as I recall

I don't know if you use VR or not, but are there any recommended mods for VR users?

I've taken a break from the main campaign missions to fool around a bit with the mission giver in stations. I like how they give you objectives located on planets outside of your current system. I wasn't expecting that. That provides a good reason to visit a system you might have otherwise skipped.

I am currently working on a mission to analyze some flora samples. It took me to this gem of a planet located in a yellow star system:

I said to myself, "Wow! This is one heck of a nice water world! I'm going to enjoy this."

Boy, was I wrong.

It is a blasted hellscape of frozen nights and burning days, with copious firestorms.

Here's a shot of a rare moment of tranquility where you only have to contend with ash falling from the sky. :D

I just need to find two more plants and I can get the heck off of this rock.

There are places where NMS can almost look photorealistic, even on a humble PS4. I search for such planets just like I search for ELWs in ED. Others are Willy Wonka land, and I tend not to stay there too long.

Speaking of missions, when in the game does the mission giver unlock? Please, no spoilers (I'm still early game, triangulating on Artimus).

Oh, one other question - where does NMS store screenshots taken with the in-game camera app?

Every active space station has a mission giver, one of the vendors on the Portal side. The missions available depend on your standing with the dominant race of that system.

I'm guessing that there's only so much automation available. For example, is there a way to feed ores from my "drill" (the one that grabs minerals from the ground on its own) to a refinery to process it automatically? I don't see a way to do this without actively moving inventory from one to the other. What can I say, Space Engineers has spoiled me ;)
