A question about covert steal missions

Yesterday i decided to try Odyssey again, and picked a covert steal mission, where i had to steal a personal computer from a settlement.
I located the chest through terminal, but to get the access code i needed a security level, so i cloned a local worker, got back to a terminal, which gave me the code, got back to the chest, used the code, but it didn't work.
I then got back to the terminal to check if i read the code right, and got back to the chest, tried the code again, and it didn't work again.
Doing that i got discovered with the cloned credentials, alarm triggered, mission failed and i had to flee the settlement.
After i was getting back to the station i noticed that i had in my storage two e-breaches, which i didn't have before, so i guess they were given by the mission.

So, the question is, was i supposed to open the chest through e-breaches?

(btw, by being discovered i got a fine, which Odyssey's interstellar contact didn't show, and i had to log back in Horizons to pay it off)

When doing covert thefts/heists, your mission will fail if you set off the alarms. So disable the alarms before doing anything else - it's a 'get out of jail free' card.

See the 3rd video in in the first post of this thread: The Definitive Stealth Guide. If you haven't done so already, also watch the first two videos first.

WRT to the code, not sure if it was a bug; the chest in the terminal had the mission/globe icon next to it, right?

If you resort to using an e-breach, DO NOT GET CAUGHT DOING IT. This includes going back to use a terminal that was e-breached - if you're found accessing it at any later time, it's considered a crime.

Either way, ALWAYS disable the alarms!

yea, you can pay those in EDO by going to some Interstellar Faction that is at least 20+ ly from the closest system in which that faction is present.
it sounds complicated, but it actually isn't :)

Codes always work at least in my experience - make sure you actually got the codes for the right locker/container and then re-check it on the spot if you use the code to the right locker/container .

It makes no sense since you are supposed to be able to pay off a fine. It's either a bug or a unintuitive design choise.
Found this on the tracker: https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/40735 (and this https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/39550, and this was supposed to be fixed: https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/32883 )

Might be an obvious question but was the target marked as a mission in the terminal? You say "chest" and I don't recall many thefts involving chests; I could be wrong (I cannot claim to have competed all theft scenarios) but I thought thefts targeted lockers. You could be forgiven for seeing the mission say steal the personal computer from locker 10, then finding container 10 in the terminal, getting the code and going for it. But that would not work.

I've never, not once, had a code fail on me. Are you 100% certain the target was marked with the blue mission marker?

If so, and you can go do the Misson again, I'd recreate it and get pics this time so we can get a bug raised.

You may have got a point, i'm not that sure it was marked blue, just looked for container 3 as i thought it was asking me. I'll try again another mission like that.

However, do e-breaches open those containers?

E breaches would work, although I don’t think I’ve done a mission where any were given to me.
Or i might have had those by other sources and never noticed, even if i don't know where they are from since i've never gone to an anarchy system to buy them

There are Containers and Lockers. You could have been looking for Container 3 when Locker 3 was specified (easily done, I certainly have). The blue planet icon lights the way.

It's most likely this.

And yes breaches work for anything with a lock. I never recommend them though. There's only one time I've found they're essential and that's when you power up a settlement with no authority.

You have to travel to select systems to purchase them - you won't find them in the majority of Pioneer supply shops.

IIRC, you need to travel to Anarchy/Communist systems to get them from the Pioneer store.

One last thing (Columbo style): do NOT take e-breaches with you when you go to disable alarms - only pick them up once you've done that. That way, if you need to drop a cloned ID when you get scanned by a guard, you'll come across as legal.

However, like @Ydiss said, you shouldn't need them. I've never needed them for a covert theft/heist.
