State of the Game

Having just given the current version a try, i'll share my opinion.

A lot of positive changes since release.

Good points.
Planets do look nicer from a distance at least (and if you can not see any obvious tiling) and on the planet surface actually quite nice as well. Graphics in general look a lot crisper than in Horizons.
Base missions seem fun.
Looks like some improvements to menus, although it still feels horribly Web 2.0 to me... changes for change sake rather than actual improvement. Maybe it will grow on me over time.... or i just come to accept it, like the damn microsoft ribbon.
So many outfit customization options and some really nice skins for weapons. I can dress my commander up like i'm playing Barbie.

Some minor issues:
System map caused game to crash for no apparent reason when docked in a station. Didn't happen later though.
For some unexplainable reason, some of my paintjobs now have acquired text with the name of the ship on it, and i mean not the name i gave it, i mean my sidewinder now has "Sidewin" wrote on it... yes, the text cuts off. Other ships have the same. Pretty sure that didn't used to happen in Horizons.
Lighting of course, but FD are aware.

The bad...

Yeah, that's 9 FPS. It actually dipped lower. Fires are a killer.

And overall, performance on planets and stations with interiors sucks.

Doing combat was horrible. Have you tried playing a FPS shooter at 10 FPS? I was aiming worse than a stormtrooper!

Its a shame. Looks like a lot in Odyssey that i will enjoy, but unless I can enjoy fairly stable 60 FPS, its just not going to happen.

I really need a new graphics card (rest of the comp was upgraded this year), but current prices... ugh.

Patch 6 might improve things, but i dobut it will improve things that much.

The thing that i don't get, i've played games, older games, that have better graphics than ED, with more and better special effects, and fires, and dust, and other effects, and can still get buttery smooth 60 FPS and the graphics card doesn't even break into a sweat.

It does indicate there must be plenty of room for optimization.

A balanced and comprehensive review.
Totally the wrong thread for such a thing, but thanks for stopping by.
Stick around and enjoy the cat memes 😁

no no no no. your problem is that you're playing with the quality settings too high ... the high and ultra settings are something that future computers will be able to utilize..ensuring the longevity of the cobra engine and the relevance of the elite dangerous game for years to come.

It's definitely not because of low wages not retaining the kind of talent needed to optimize math intensive engine functions in assembly and gpu shaders and having to work with an engine nobody else uses with apparently a bunch of tenured managers / directors who dont seem very concerned about an actual quality game.

The first concert I went to was Huey Lewis and the News. You may commence laughing.
No shame there - I saw them live and thought they were excellent entertainment, and they really knew how to entertain an audience. Not the best band or the best gig, but they were having a ball on stage, and we could feel it. The same with <oh gosh many good bands, esp. Bon Jovi, Skunk Anansie, Blur, Prodigy, Heart...>.

Just not the Pretenders or the Jesus and Mary Chain, both of whom attended only barely physically and received an appropriate response from their audience/fans - with plenty leaving mid-gig, although with the Pretenders this was pretty tough as they didn't bother staying on stage for a full 60 minutes. No-one called for an encore. In fact, no-one had even got out of their seats (although there was a queue on the way out of people asking for their money back). Albeit, at odds with the JaMC, where the 'lead' decided to sit on the floor from song #2 and didn't bother moving thereafter. If they hadn't been playing at a festival I'm not sure they would have made it out of the stage door.

Part of me sooooo wants to post the Goat-see picture with ‘meow’ slapped across the bottom of it (for the love of god, do NOT google that).

Pretty sure it’d be the last thing i ever posted before the Yafflehammer obliterated my account. Might even get this thread locked! Where would we get our pointless inanity then?!

As somebody who unfortunately knows exactly what you mean, I can only agree with your conclusion.

To those who do not know what's being talked about, count your blessings!

Actually i do have it mostly set to high, because i found setting it to low made no noticeable difference. A few frames here and there. Still unplayable anyway.

I did not do the lowering supersamping then using the AMD upscaling trick, because that is just horse manure to me. Make it effectively run at a lower resolution and then upscale to get better FPS? Look at the graphics, this isn't even Skyrim level of quality and yet i can throw Skyrim on max settings and get a lot better experience. Back in alpha, i did set to 0.4 supersampling and yeah performance was a bit better (30 FPS more consistently in stations) but still not acceptable.

5 patches, i'd hoped for better optimizations now. Maybe patch 6 will help a bit more, i don't know.

But its just clear the old 960 isn't going to handle Odyssey well no matter what FD do. Which is a shame, because it handles Horizons just fine and we were led to believe that the requirements were not going to be that different.

I've no idea how they will get it working well on consoles. But that's not my problem.

My problem is convincing 'er indoors that a new graphics card is totally required :D
