Camera Suite Improvements: Update Notes

Thanks for the write-up Sally! :)

Quick question about this bullet:
  • This allows Commanders to fly the camera freely around a settlement, social space, or other location, without the camera blacking out whenever the line of sight to the player's vessel is occluded.
Does "vessel" here refer to ship/SRV/avatar - i.e. whichever the CMDR was controlling prior to entering FreeCam? So when on-foot the "vessel" is the human body?

I am a bit afraid that the new camera suite upgrade (as good as it is) will break the current workaround for VR players to get on-foot VR.

Update 5 already broke part of the functionality, the camera no longer centers on the head but a bit above, and it does not follow crouching anymore

It could also mean that we get the old functionality back. Since the workaround is no intended functionality any update might break EDO further us VR players and will most likely not be tested internally by FDev.
It is probably to late for Update 6, but could we get a button to move the camera just in front of the face as a stopgap solution in the next Update (until a real VR implementation can be undertaken, right after console release?)

Yes because obviously the camera suite is the highest priority bug that needs to be fixed first.

Don't hate me, someone has to say it.

Definitely not, but I prefer a team working in its area of expertise instead of adding nothing to the current patch at all or trying to fix something in an area they don't know about.

Unless ... they could be working on a VR implementation instead ... but maybe they are, and are only calling it camera suite until it is ready to deploy ... ;)

Sure! The vessel will be the "body"/"vehicle" in each individual case of where the camera suite is being activated from.

I'll keep an eye out for any issues encountered for VR users post update 6. As I say, we will keep listening to feedback for sure!

The issues with the Camera Suite were universally loud though - like really really loud. It would have been really ickie for any part of the cries to be ignored really.

How does the new camera deal with open doors and security force fields? Can I open a door, and virtually sneak inside and not trigger the security field?

I’m looking forward to playing with this (VR had a nasty habit of Signal-Lost-ing just by a bit of head movement, just at the wrong moment) 😁

As asked earlier, does the new freecam work within our ships? ie. can we detach the camera to float around the cabin?

Thanks a lot for the update style update Sally :D

This has made me far happier, because it clearly shows that it's not just a case of putting the camera suite back to how it works in Odyssey, which is what the initial update sounded/looked like, but actually changes the way it works.

It's interesting that the only thing that used to have collision detection (your ship) is now the only thing that doesn't have it. I look forward to having a play around, and finding some more Osseus Pumice so I can take the screenshot I wanted to take the first time I found some :)

Yep! I've tried to say 'Elite Dangerous: Odyssey' as many times as possible throughout the post to be as clear as poss hehe.
So excited.

Nooo I'm afraid not, otherwise I would have ABSOLUTELY included that in these notes for sure :)

This is brilliant stuff, I like it when you give us an insight into what and where and how and why.. hearing about why someting works or doesn't is the answer many crave. Really excited that you guys have brought this and it's really nice to be listened to. You and your team and all the developers are doing great work in restoring faith and trust. The more this game improves the more people will return and hopefully you can snag a few new players too!

Glad to hear it Piglet!

im liking the new lighting, if that what it looks like.
shame there was FPS stuttering, i was hoping these has been recorded using the new FSR boost in performance.

looks nice though.
