Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Update 6

Posting this here where it belongs rather than Sally's happy friday thread.

Hey CM team,
Really appreciating the engagement and feedback, please keep looking after yourselves first and foremost!

Some feedback from a session this morning, sorry about this.

Performance
Performance hasn't improved for me, Odyssey FPS is still 60-65% that of Horizons in directly comparible places with no on foot elements, with Odyssey's FPS being noticably more unstable never mind the drops and extra instability when I go to an Odyssey settlement or concourse.
I know there are deeper performance improvements being looked at, I hope they're addressed the direct performance downgrade compared to Horizons as well as specific on foot elements.

I've tried down-sampling and using FSR, it definitely works and helps with FPS but adds a LOT more aliasing to the image, makes the text harder to read and also just doesn't look as nice to me (1440p monitor and VR headset with 4k per eye)

Paintjobs
With the Stygian (and Iridescent) paintjobs, the problem was not the colour, it's that half the PJ is missing (I've checked this morning)
In Odyssey it looks like this:

In Horizons it looks like this:

Repeating terrain
Finally in regards to the repeating terrain geography you're talking about here:

I drove the SRV over some cool terrain, then flew to the other side of the world and saw the exact same terrain.

Sorry this isn't more positive

Nice colors. Go Green, Go White.

Sorry this is a bit dark but, it appears features are distorted beyond intent on some planets. Shown are craters that look like absymal holes to the nether world while other times small hills look like spires to the heavens. Note the crater at the top-center of the pic.

@sallymorganmoore : I think I found something that changed with update 6?

When I now scan a planet the probe range is WAY bigger then before?
Normally the scan range is about half the planet or 2/3.
Now the range is the whole front side.
The percentages seem to be the same but the graphic representation is WAY off.

Or did you shrink the planets?
Hello! Oh gosh no we haven't shrunk any planets hehe. I'll have a little ask whether this range change was intentional :) Thanks!
Actually this sounds more like Hi-Jobe could be using the engineered scanner that was a reward in a couple of recent CGs?

I don't even own Odyssey, yet reading the forum lately has been kinda depressing. Where is the good news?
Probably still 3, 5, 8 updates further down the line, or perhaps never. I'm getting the impression that Odyssey is very broken at some very basic fundamental level, and that can't get fixed by slapping neverending patches on top. That needs an at least partial rewrite of the whole thing.

Or the game should actually run on recommended system requirements which is-
  • RECOMMENDED:
    • OS: Windows 10 64bit
    • Processor: Intel i5-8600 / AMD Ryzen 5 2600
    • Memory: 12 GB RAM
    • Graphics: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1060 (6 GB VRAM) / AMD RX 580 (8 GB VRAM)
    • DirectX: Version 11
    • Storage: 75 GB available space
Taken from Steam btw and having a system that above said requirements should provide even better results and that is not happening
I run Win 7 (better for processing gaming - despite what other think win7 hands off the cpu to the GPU properly with out intercepting. Win 10 not so well - its a pig.)
I7-975
12 GB 2800 Corsair RAM
Nvidia GTX 1080
DX v11, 250 GB space.

I run EDO fine when putting everything back to Normal mode. 60-65 fps everywhere accept CZ . CZ is mostly 55-60fps but there can be dropped or freeze screen instances. This is more programming than anything else. The key is having your OS and GPU parameters set properly. Ill grant that people should not have to be experts in this area to run a game like this though...

You know things are bad when the people who love Odyssey are now growing frustrated.

People don't usually come to the forum to complain that their game is working just fine, thanks.

Forum threads like this have an element of selective reporting bias to them. Although it seems there's a problem, it's hard to tell how widespread it actually is.

XBox controller on PC CMDR, here.

Anybody else notice that with Update 6, the SRV's contextual controls are borked? Or is it just me? I used to hold X and press down for the role panel. But now everytime I press X, I immediately go to turret view. So I press down first and then hit X, I manage to make it to role panel but it absolutely was not like that before Update 6.

Edit, also @sallymorganmoore , earlier in the thread, I confirmed that the game was exiting cleanly. Well it did last night. Twice today, upon exit, I got the black screen. No playstyle differences, never visited the ARX store. Only in station, planet, settlement, station, log off. Cheers.

That's been my assessment as well. Even statements like, "We're checking lighting here, here, here, and here" feels wrong. It feels like they are applying specific filters to every individual scenario (in cockpit, in station, on planet A, on planet B, etc) instead of fixing the lighting system as a whole. Instead of replacing the banged-up fender, they are filling it with Bondo. Same goes for using tricks like subsampling (insert fancy flavor of the day) to improve performance. It just feels, wrong.

If Elite were a car, would it pass inspection?

Please stop discriminating against anarchy factions, TIA.

Not your fault but remains absolutely awful how Odyssey's content singles out anarchy factions as everyone's whipping boys. Would really like someone to have thought about the BGS effects in advance.
With noteriety added now you can bet it’s going to intensify.

They created a separate option for enabling the context menu on SRV and on foot , under "Driving miscellaneous" and "On Foot miscellaneous", which for some reasons are defaulted to off

Yuuuup.... we're already braced for it. Thankfully player numbers remain pretty low, so it's unlikely to be as damaging as the initial launch was. Weird to be in a position of being thankful that the game isn't performing well, but here we are.

I believe someone else mentioned a similar problem with an XB controller, and it turned out they needed to change a setting in their SRV control bindings to make it behave as it used to...

I think that as to do with the new PBR, they probably have to do recalibrations for every single material (however, i'm not an expert, but i think that something like that had to be done even with the previouvs system)

I agree with the first part, but generally an 'update' thread you would hope to contain lots of post with people thanking the developers for their hard work - as you can see on the first few pages, then of course people actually get to download and test it - that's when things go pear shaped.

For me the biggest problems in Odyssey were and continue to be:
Terrible frame rates
Broken planet tech
Bad networking ( instancing / teams / wings issues etc pre-date Odyssey and continue to plague the game )

All the other fixes become irreverent if FDev are not able to actually fix those core issues.

I simply don't care how many broken missions might actually work now if the frame rate makes all on ground missions too painful to endure.

The AMD's supersampling feature is a band-aid at best. It's a not a fix.
More variety in colours of planets is not a fix for the repeated height maps, it's a just a slight distraction from them.
