Update 6 Terrain Comparison Thread

I'm back :)

Update 6 sees updates to the terrain textures and colours while the terrain features, shapes and tiling remains the same as before. I'm curious to see if people are finding improvements to what was seen in previous updates.

Personally I find the planets in Odyssey to look like they are made up off a bunch of layers with shapes and colours and this update feels like more layers were added. To me it they don't really look like real planets anymore. They look more like a sphere made up of too many overlaying terrain colour layers, making little islands of illogical terrain colours without a logic flow to them.

I haven't had a lot of time to look at many planets though so I'm really curious, if we all add our comparisons here (perhaps you have screenshots of locations that you could revisit) what we can collect.

First look I did was of planet Rebuy HQ. Originally, while suffering from the "camouflage spotting", the colours were of a desert planet. Mainly two different colours that were already quite constrasting but "acceptable". In Update 6 it feels like they simply added a ton of layers of different colours. In some places the sand still pokes through but in general there are more incoherent green/grey areas.

Going up close sees the terrain having lost a lot of its desert look and exotic brightness. I'm noticing that there appears to be a lot more of that ugly dark black contrasting problem again as well. Not sure if this is just as a result to the darker terrain colour but it doesn't bode well.

I also notice on a side note that the atmosphere sees a lot less stars poking through. Did they change the look of how dense the atmospheres look? If they did then it reflects poorly in the "ambient atmosphere" and is only visible in the back ground atmosphere effect so I'm not sure...

Here is another example of the darkness having returned. The cockpit and surrounding area looks very dark for a planet in bright sunlight.

I've also noticed that she shield ring is blinking when 0% which is quite annoying; especially when you don't have a shield generator installed. They did change the font though so that it is in-line now with the rest of the HUD. Now they just need to put the text up right.

Let's see now ... well I too checked out that first planet in the OP here and noticed that the perma-locked settlement (which therefore pretty much always has the star fairly high in the sky) had gone from a dazzling blue Tatooine dessert to a dull grey Slough shopping centre.

I'd also heard that Pomeche 2 C was looking good again so went to check that out. Well, it's got the right colour palette I suppose but unfortunately it looks like a bad stomach after a night of over-indulging on rocky road and blue slush puppies.

It's like my game loaded the first level of detail at high altitude but then gave up and and never managed to render anything higher quality.

And lastly, not my screen shot but I was amused at how the new colouration has really highlighted the tiling problem (not entirely sure that was FD's intention tho').

On the plus side, the shield % no longer rotates so ... yay.

On foot, without AMD upscaling/sharpening, I have a lot of terrain texture "shimmering" (on medium distance, not near the player).
The shimmering appears when walking forward/backward, almost nothing when strafing left/right.

I see this immediately when starting the on foot tutorial.

I'll post some screenshot later.

It really feels like they struggle to bring the old looks back to this version of ED.
It is pretty frustrating.

I can say that some planets like the above ice planets look really good and better than Horizon.
But then there are the above and other examples I saw myself just now.

I'm really rooting for them to succeed but there is so little that they share so I don't understand the struggle.
I really wish there will be a talk from them about the full decision-making of moving from Horizon tech to this and the challenges of planets and how they look etc.

it won't solve problems but it will help us understand.
I think at this point it would be smart.

Indeed, this is exactly the sort of thing they should be sharing with us, who knows we may even begin to sympathise!

update 6 planets look much better for me. I am using ultra+ for terrain and also ultra on the shadow settings which help a lot of the shadow shimmering problems.
I feel like this is by far the best the planets have looked in the history of this game.

It's funny you mentioned the highlighting of repeating tiling features. I came across an ice planet with that same star shaped impact crater practically plastered all over the planet in multiple succession. I'll hop in game and provide screenshots.

This was taken after update 6 in the starting planet - it's ULTRA and ULTRA+ for terrain :

I definitely agree that the best results with Odyssey appear to surround ice planets.

Who knows we may even begin to sympathise!

I know right?! I've been saying this from the start. Just communicate on all the things you're doing, planning and what influences your decision making. Specifically surrounding the planet tech in this instance.

Personally when I saw the Dev Update 2 planet screenshots I was both surprised and underwhelmed. It's great to see there is a lot of hard working going into it though I remain skeptical that it'll reach Horizons levels of terrain complexity. I'm talking terrain features here, not texture work.

As a gentle reminder of the amazing Horizons planet tech terrain features that we're losing:

Has anybody had a look at Farseer or happens to be near by? I'd love to see what Update 6 did to improve the low quality terrain textures around it. I personally lack the willpower to go in-game, travel there and check it out.

Is that in Odyssey?

I have visited the engineer base at Achenar yesterday - and if you are interested in the terrain just beneath the base - no, I haven't noticed any big improvements in blending. But I'm also a bit amazed with efforts to judge Odyssey terrain generation by searching it underneath the outdated Horizons assets. Probably relocating all those "special" bases to generic megaships will be the best solution...

Some height map stretching. Some rough rendering from a distance. I'm getting lots of mixed results. I'm playing at 4k with mostly ultra/high settings besides shadows at medium. AMD FSR or whatever it's called at Ultra Quality and Ultra+ (the renamed Ultra for Capture). Model draw distance at max. My game is running smoothly at 40-60 FPS with rare drops below 35 FPS. I don't know what to make of this honestly.

They went overboard with colors. I feel it's random, and honestly, it's cartoonish, like NMS.

Chocolate-coco ice cream

On the ground we switch to "cardboard set for a 1980's tv show". I expect a Gorn trying to kill a dude with a ripped shirt to appear at any time.

And now this is Deciat (farseer inc).

For fun, sense of scale is pretty much gone since Odyssey for me. This is 200+km (!!!) away from Farseer inc, yet you can see the tower and even the details of the outside building. 200km away ! I could see the tower from much further away, it's ridiculous.

And since we are on the subject of Farseer inc, the place is still trash. Now, it's handcrafted so it's unique in it's ugliness, but still.

I'm very sad for Farseer, that's usually the first engineer place a new player see. It was the first planet I landed on as a newbie, and it was gorgeous. Now ? Well....

Now, fair's fair, that patch improved some stuff. Still not very good, except for a few planet, but improved nevertheless.
This is 3 screenshots of the same planet. Pre alpha trailer, Odyssey patch 5, and patch 6 :

So, while we are still not near to the promised planetary tech, we are closer, and it's an improvement over the trash we had. It's decent.

I said it once and I'll say it again:
The more they patch Odissey, the more It behaves like NMS...
