State of the Game

i have to launch with a little wrapper script to launch the game if i want to login with a non-steam account.

the game works nearly native in VR and regular. FSR doesn't seem to play well with my 1080p setup. ...but maybe less of an issue with the interlacing at higher resolutions.

i get 90fps (my limiter) out in space and in roid fields currently. on my radeon 5600xt . on surfaces i get around 70 on empty planets ...or 90 if using fsr (which is less artifact filled when walking around) .. haven't tested in civilization

everything else works just the same as in windows.

Lookin and Smash Hits were great. I also miss pulp comics like Battle, Tornado and Victor, and all sorts of crap like that.
Eagle was my one of choice, later 2000AD.

My sister, who lives in Dundee, used to CONSTANTLY get me “Oor Wullie” annuals for Christmas, despite constant reminders that I was in fact, not Scottish but Irish and had only set foot in Scotland on one weekend as a nine year old.

Whats the overhead? I assume it goes via a wrapper and Wine / Proton?

proton's (well, dxvk specifically) has a very low overhead. it's unlikely you'll notice it in elite at all. ..since the game isn't optimized not just in the graphics side of things but elsewhere. Even when your framerate isn't maxed out for your limiter ...you'll likely not be showing 100% gpu usage or cpu core usage. so ... i dont think you'll have to worry about wrapper overhead here .

in other games.. it's negligible

sometimes framerate is even higher than in windows...sometimes it's a bit lower. but we're talking a handful of frames per second.

Most games work. There are a few that may have graphical artifacts. or a few games that do things that just isn't supported by proton/wine outside of the whole directx api. Things like epic's kernel driver for anti-cheating. or perhaps certain sister applications that do weird windows things that aren't supported but the game itself depends on. but in general, the normal stuff all works and works well.

AMD graphics cards are your best supported option in linux land for vulkan support ....you can do proprietary nvidia drivers but you'll be limited to the kernels it supports

I used to get Eagle and 2000AD as well. I also remember how the magazines would merge so often- Battle Action Force, and the millions of comics that got merged with the Eagle :D

Ah, actually going into a newsagents, past the 10p mix up bags and Matchbox cars in big slidey glass cabinets.

Kids today, how much they've missed out on.

i only play games in linux ...mix of actual native games and dxvk wine driven ones. no man's sky, X4, star citizen, elite dangerous...all on there, but star citizen and nms tend to be more finicky in if they break support after an update than elite usually is. Conan exiles plays well enough but without the battleeye stuff..you're limited a bit there. the borderlands games all play very well. total annihilation plays very well :). X3 plays well. Stellaris, screeps, avorion, starmade play well. Warframe plays well .

A couple more from my ongoing trip back to Colonia - all in Odyssey, of course ;)
