I'll tell you whats in a right state- Lego- new stuff is brittle as hell. Old stuff may kill the planet but at least I can click it together without it breaking.
maybe you purchased some old stock exposed to the sun?
buying them on the second hand market is a crapshoot on how old that supply is

No, this is brand new. Certain colours apparently have issues (light beige for example).

it is very similar with foodstuff, which has a "rotten" component, like smelly cheese. children eat cheese, but those are more processed cheeses like those slices put on toast. Their acceptance of sour - resp. acid - ingredients is lower as well, like vinegar salad dressing. Same goes for all hot spices, those originate from plants, which try to defend themselves by being that hot and spicy. With more life experience the tolerance to these things increases - but it makes a whole lot of sense for children to have these dislikes.
